Volunteer Coordinator  News
A Note from Sharon
Dear Families,

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Elementary Volunteer Coordinator these past two years.  This has been one of the best work experiences of my career, and I will miss it immensely.  I have been so blessed to get to know you and your children, and I am excited to continue to work with many of you through FOSB and when I occasionally fill in in the lunchroom next year.  This place is special, and so much of that is thanks to you, the amazing parents of Salmon Bay.  I am leaving you in good, capable hands with Jodi Russell.  Please welcome her warmly!

I would also like to give a special bit of recognition to Caitlin Racey and Megan Ratcliffe who have been so instrumental to helping me navigate this position.  And to Jen and Brett, who make every decision through the lens of "what's best for students?". It has been my pleasure to be part of this amazing staff.

Be excellent to each other,

Sharon

Principal's Note - Principals for the Day Edition
Hi. This is Shamus and Carmen. We were the Principals for the Day on Monday, June 16th. It was very fun and we hope that other kids can enjoy the experience in the future. Some of the fun things we go to do include: touring the basement, visiting all of the classrooms and going out for lunch with Jen and Hobbes. Thanks to our parents, Ben and Dana for purchasing this opportunity for us at this year's FOSB auction.

Have a nice summer,

Shamus and Carmen

Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families:

I can't believe it is already the last week of school. I had an especially fun time today with Carmen and Shamus, my Principals for the Day. They created and completed a school-wide furniture inventory, made various school announcements, helped facilitate a teacher meeting, demonstrated flexibility by handling some unexpected situations and much, much more. They did a GREAT job.

We know that the end of the year can be a challenging time for students as they recognize that they are losing the predictability and structure of the school day. Please help us ensure a safe, kind and responsible environment by reminding the kids to demonstrate their best behavior during our final days of school.

I will be sending staffing and other updates throughout the upcoming weeks.  Thank you for your continued support. It's been a great year.

Thanks,

Jen

Assistant Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay Community,

My transition to Spokane is going to occur faster than I had expected.  My departure date has been moved forward so that I may attend Spokane's leadership conference on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  So, my last day at Salmon Bay will be Tuesday, June 17th.  Yes, this is tomorrow!

The last two years has been wonderful.  I am thankful to have had this opportunity to work with the students, teachers and parents at Salmon Bay.  Your dedication and commitment to choice in public education is extremely valuable and I hope that you will continue to collectively advocate for choice in education.

Jen and I have worked closely together to ensure a smooth ending to the school year.   I am sorry to miss the end of year celebrations.  Have a great summer and I hope our paths will cross again!

Tschüss bis spatter,

Brett Joachim

Salmon Bay School wins the K-8 Golden Pedal Award!

Congratulations!  Salmon Bay logged the most minutes during Bike to School Month of any K-8 school in the city - we were the top K-8 school in Seattle!  As the winner of the Golden Pedal Award, Salmon Bay has won a brand new Raleigh bicycle, which we will be giving away to one lucky student.

We also want to congratulate Zoe Thompson (1003 minutes) and Jet Jacobson (824 minutes) as the top to cyclists for Salmon Bay during Bike to School Month. Each have been given a free bike tune-up at Bikesport.  Other Bike to School month awards will be given out this week.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all those who participated in the fun events and to all the volunteers on the FOSB Walk/Bike Committee that helped make Bike to School month at Salmon Bay such a success. We especially want to thank our faculty sponsors Marian Wagner and Brett Joachim, who helped us tremendously over the course of the year.

Be safe, and we will see you next year!

Notes from the Library

Notes from the Library:

I have to begin by extending a huge and heartfelt "thank you" to everyone who kept the library running smoothly this year. Cassie Brickell did an amazing job tackling both teaching and organizing tasks as my family leave sub. It was a big relief to know that students and staff were well taken care of in my absence. Kelly Speight, our parent-shelver extraordinaire,  kept the nonfiction section in great shape all year. (This is a big job at Salmon Bay...we read a lot of nonfiction!) I also had three rock-star TAs: Sophie Adams and Ella Jones (1st semester), and Kaila Righi (2nd semester.)  We circulated almost 20,000 books this year, and a big chunk of those were checked out, checked in, or shelved by the TAs!

Last, but certainly not least, thanks so much to FOSB for all you do to support our library! Our entire budget for collection development comes from FOSB, either through book fair commission, or as a dedicated line item in the annual budget.  Speaking of book fairs, l would like to thank Julie Kosev for doing a fabulous job coordinating last fall's University Book Store book fair, and Sherry Wilhelm, Brooke Ike, and Audrey Lee for their great team effort leading our recent successful  Secret Garden book fair. We've been able to add almost 800 new books to the collection this year!

I know that we have many enthusiastic and self-motivated readers, but even the most enthusiastic among us might need a bit of help finding the next good book. Here are a few ideas:

Here is a comprehensive and well-curated list for students, grades 3-6 (approximately.) Middle Web is geared toward teachers, but their list  is suitable for all users.  One of the most frequent questions I get from parents is some variation of the following: "How can I find books that are challenging for my strong reader, but are also appropriate for where they are developmentally?"  Luckily, there are quite a few resources on the web. Here are two that I have shared in the past:

YALS A (the Young Adult division of ALA) has a great list of teen books that are also good choices for ‘tweens. For younger elementary students, these lists from Multnomah County Library have many good suggestions.

Everyone will enjoy reading this year's nominees for the Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award. (And be sure to check out the link to past nominees for more great ideas!)

Happy Reading!

Linda
