Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families:

It's hard to believe that we are in the final weeks of the school year.  We are definitely keeping busy with camps, projects and promotion ceremonies. I wanted to take a moment this week to provide you with the most recent staffing and school/district updates.

STAFFING NEWS

Middle School Volunteer Coordinator -

I hope you will join me in welcoming Kristina Cerise as our new Middle School Volunteer Coordinator.  Kristina has a child currently at Salmon Bay and will also have an incoming kindergarten student in the fall.  She brings with her over ten years of experience as a Land Use Planner and she is an accomplished freelance writer. Our interview team unanimously agreed that Kristina's skill set is an asset to our staff, particularly in this role that requires close collaboration with families and staff to maximize and align volunteer coordination at SB K-8.

SCHOOL/DISTRICT NEWS

  • K-5 Access Program

Students who receive "Access" services are those students with intensive special education needs who benefit from spending the majority of their instructional time, including specially designed instruction, in the general education setting with a full range of supports. Students may qualify in any one of the 13 federally mandated categories of disability.

Salmon Bay administration was recently notified that we are the lucky recipients of a newly added K-5 Access program. This program brings us the opportunity to expand our inclusive school community as, over time, we will welcome 10 new families to our school. My current understanding is that ACCESS students will be assigned to Salmon Bay as seats become available. I am working with school and district staff to determine facility changes that will best support the needs of all of our new and current students and will keep you posted as our plans become more formalized.

  • K-5 Math Adoption

Another important announcement is the school board's adoption of Math in Focus (aka Singapore Math), citing that ..."the Singapore method, concrete to visual to abstract, is key to the program's success." Our K-5 team met to discuss whether to continue with our newly adopted TERC curriculum or to move forward with the board's adoption. Knowing that the board adopted Math in Focus curriculum guarantees us access to free resources and professional development played a large role in our decision. With that being said, we have agreed to implement Math in Focus as our primary resource, using TERC and/or other math resources available to us to supplement when needed. Implementation will begin September 2014.

Thanks,

Jen

Turn in Bike to School Calendars by Thursday, June 12

We had incredible participation for Bike to School Month...now let's get some credit for our efforts!

If you haven't already, please turn in the pink Bike to School calendars by Thursday, June 12.  The calendars can be turned in to your child's teacher or directly to Marian Wagner in Room 214.

In addition to the individual student awards, the school needs you to turn in the calendars so we can win the coveted "Golden Pedal" award for K-8 schools participating in Bike to School month.  Judging from the jam-packed bike rack every day, we believe that we earned it!

Notes from the Library

Hello from the Library: It's seems like such a cliché to say it, but it seems like just yesterday  I was writing to welcome everyone to a "new year" in the Salmon Bay library. I just want to take a moment to say how much I have enjoyed working with students, staff and parents this year! And speaking of parents, there are a few parents whose time, effort and energy are critical to the day-to-day running of our library: Sheri Feld, who has coordinated our twice yearly book fairs for as long as I've been here (and maybe even longer); Keith Slawson, who has donated several hours on a weekly basis to make sure that books get back out on the shelves where folks can find them (and who always cheerfully offers his expertise to anyone with a problem or question); and Linda Richards, who is our resident expert on covering books. Please take a moment to extend a hearty "thank you" to these folks!

Several elementary classes came to the library on Friday to visit with Pamela LaBorde, the Children's Librarian at the Ballard SPL branch. She shared information with students about the Summer Reading Program, as well as SPL's challenge to have all of their patrons, city-wide collectively read 125,000 books this summer. Our students are eager to help with this effort (and they hope that their parents will be, too!) I know that I have my stack ready! I will also be putting some information together, regarding summer reading resources, and then posting the information to the school website. I will try to provide periodic updates throughout the summer, so sign up for the RSS feed (if you haven't already!)

This is also that time of year when I encourage students and families to take a few moments to look around your house for any library books that may be hiding. We've been doing some brainstorming sessions during library time, coming up with lists of the interesting places one might find a library book.  (So be sure to ask your student to help with the search.) Remember that our books are paid for from parent-raised monies, so please help us maximize those book-buying funds by making certain that library books get returned before the end of school! We don't charge fines for overdue books, but do ask that lost or damaged books be paid for. Feel free to contact me  (laillman@seattleschools.org or 206.252.1737) with any questions or concerns you may have!

This has been a wonderful year for reading...nothing makes me happier than hearing back from a student about how much they enjoyed a book that I recommended to them! I'm wishing students and their families many wonderful reading moments this summer.

-Linda
