Volunteer Coordinator  News
Welcome to your Early Edition Monday Bulletin.  Jodi and Sharon are both chaperoning camp on Monday and Tuesday and will be back in the building on Wednesday morning.  Have a great week!

Join us for the Final FOSB Meeting of this School Year

This Thursday, June 5th, is our last FOSB meeting of this school year.  We hope that you will attend!

The proposed budget (to be voted on at this meeting) includes cuts to teacher's classroom funds and team funds.  The budget was made based on the money that FOSB raised this school year.  If you would like to contribute directly to restoring the $5,000 that was cut, please use the donate link below.

If you have a child at Salmon Bay you are already a member of FOSB and have full voting privileges. This is your personal invitation from your Volunteer Coordinators to join us on Thursday evening; come see what FOSB is all about!

Chinook Book Volunteer Needed for Next Year

Chinook Book requires a few hours a week in Mid-August to get set up and then about 5 hours a week for the 4 weeks the sale goes on in September/October.

M.S. Sports Apparel Volunteer Needed for Next Year
The Middle School Sports Apparel is coordinated with MS Coaches and involves working with them to get orders from the team members and place them with our shirt company.  Interested? Have questions?  Email Sharon at slmaglianofe@seattleschools.org.

End of year events - Volunteers Needed
The talent show, 5th and 8th grade promotions, field day, dances.  There is so much going on at the end of the year and we need volunteers to make it all possible.  Look for an email from us later this week with our specific needs.

Special for Elementary

June 10 - New 6th Grader Welcome Night

Incoming 6th graders should have received their paperwork and invitation last week. If you did not,  email Jodi at jrrussell@seattleschools.org Save the date! We hope to see you then!

Special for Middle School
6th and 7th Grade Dance on June 6th
Thanks to all who volunteered to chaperone, we have plenty of adult supervision at this time.  We do still need donations of fruit flavored Pop Tarts and Apple or Orange Juice.

6th and 7th Grade Families needed to help with 8th Grade Promotion
We are in need of volunteers to assist with 8th grade promotion on June 18th. We  ask  6th or  7th grade families to help so that the 8th grade families can relax and enjoy the promotion ceremony.  It will be your turn to relax and shed tears before you know it! If you and your student plan to attend promotion and are willing to help us out... we'd greatly appreciate it!

7th Grade Activity Week is This Week

7th Grade Activity Week:  Do you wonder what your 7th graders are doing while 8th graders are at camp?  We have a long tradition called Activity Week where the 7th graders from both teams are combined and have four days of special classes.  They'll have a six period day where they rotate through a poetry class with Kate, a science investigation with Melanie, a math project with Janet, creating a board game with Jennifer, PE with Hien and paper creations with Harmony.  Each class will have a grade for the four days of work, and the grades will be in the same subjects that the class represents, with PE and paper creations going into homeroom grades.  This week is unusual because of the early dismissal on Wednesday and the combined 6th/7th grade dance on Friday afternoon; on those two days, students will have all six classes before lunch but with shorter times for each class.  If you have any questions, you can email Melanie at meshelton@seattleschools.org or call her at 252-1781.

Assistant Principal's Note

Student-Centered Learning

As an adult, one often reflects back to their school years and discovers that moments of student empowerment created the most enduring memory.  One of my favorite memories was the time when I was able to lead my 4th grade class in mixing bread dough.  This classroom activity highlighted how yeast is a catalyst in the fermentation process that makes bread rise into nice fluffy loaves.

At Salmon Bay one of our primary goals is to keep teaching and learning centered on students.  This involves providing students with opportunities to extend their knowledge of content by helping to explain concepts to their classmates.

Additionally, we seek opportunities for students to have choice in how they complete tasks or topics of research.

This last week several examples highlight this student centered focus.  The 6th grade class completed their biography unit by hosting a wonderful biography night event where students presented first-person presentations.  Our 8th grade students completed their culminating project by presenting a topic of their choice to their peers.  In the elementary, Dave's 2nd grade students are collaboratively working with the computer program Garage Band to compose custom music.

Student choice is one of the key factors in achievement. This approach often takes more time and can add additional layers of stress to teachers and parents; however, the reward is great!  We greatly appreciate your support and encouragement as we strive to empower our students to be leaders in their individual learning.

Notes from the Library
It's been a busy year in the Salmon Bay library! Our circulation rates are up almost 20% from what they've been over the last few years, and we may hit 20,000 circulations for the first time ever. Way to go Salmon Bay Readers!

The end of the year is a very busy time for book returns, so please be patient with us as we work our way through the stacks of books that will need to get checked in. As always, if you have any questions about an overdue notice, please let me know. As this is such a busy time of year in the library, you might want to get in touch via email laiilman@seattleschools.org

Also, please let me know if you think that any of our Salmon Bay library books may have inadvertently been returned to the Seattle Public Library.

We're looking forward to librarian Pamela LaBorde's annual visit with our elementary students on Thursday, June 12th. She will be sharing information about SPL's Summer Reading Program, as well as entertaining our students with one of her favorite recently published books. (Many of you may know Pamela, as she is the fabulous Children's Services Librarian at the Ballard branch.)

Look for a list of resources filled with suggestions for summer reading in next week's bulletin.

-Linda

Reel Grrls Summer Opportunities

I am the President of the Board at Reel Grrls, the mother of a Reel Grrl and I deeply believe in our mission: To empower young women from diverse communities to realize their power, talent and influence through media production.

I'd like to introduce you to the amazing Tani Ikeda, one of the first Reel Grrls from over 10 years ago. She has made this powerful message to describe how Reel Grrls changes lives by activating grrls to dream further. I am inspired to know that there are hundreds of grrls out there whose lives have been changed by Reel Grrls programs since we began in 2001!

I am so excited to be offering a full line up of cool programs yet again this summer, and YET AGAIN on a pay what you can basis, so that every grrl can help create the RG magic that changes all of our lives through media literacy and media production.

Check out the programs at http://www.reelgrrls.org/programs.
