Assisstant Principal's Note

Our clubs wrapped up last Friday and were a great success. Be sure to ask your 7th and 8th graders what they did last week to wrap up their club session.

Do you have an interest or talent that you would like to share with students?  We are currently looking for community members to help enhance our learning community by leading a middle school interest club.

This school year we created a 50-minute block for student clubs on Fridays during 7th period.  Clubs open the door to new friendships, broaden student learning, and provide opportunities to explore new interests and careers. While many students are involved in activities and/or clubs outside of school, we think students should have similar opportunities during the day here at school.  The following is the list of clubs that were offered this school year: Books and Binding, Cartooning Club, Cooking Club, Dream Club, Fitness Challenge, Glee Club/Rock Band, Global Connect Club, GSA, Guitar Circle, Knitting for Everyone, Library Club, Marimba Club, Martial Arts Club, Office Supply Engineering, Photography, Physical Comedy, Public Art, Raw and Nourishing 'Cooking', Seattle Sports Fans, Sewing Club, Strategic Games, Watercolor, and Website Construction.

It is our goal to coordinate our 2014/15 first semester clubs this spring.  A semester commitment would involve approximately 12 Friday sessions.  We have a small budget to pay club leaders, but are also looking for volunteers.  It is our goal to provide 14 clubs each semester.  Please send me an email if you are interested in coordinating a middle school club next fall.

Have a great week,
Brett

Reel Grrls Summer Opportunities

I am the President of the Board at Reel Grrls, the mother of a Reel Grrl and I deeply believe in our mission: To empower young women from diverse communities to realize their power, talent and influence through media production.

I'd like to introduce you to the amazing Tani Ikeda, one of the first Reel Grrls from over 10 years ago. She has made this powerful message to describe how Reel Grrls changes lives by activating grrls to dream further. I am inspired to know that there are hundreds of grrls out there whose lives have been changed by Reel Grrls programs since we began in 2001!

I am so excited to be offering a full line up of cool programs yet again this summer, and YET AGAIN on a pay what you can basis, so that every grrl can help create the RG magic that changes all of our lives through media literacy and media production.

Check out the programs at http://www.reelgrrls.org/programs.

From Jennifer Geist, president of Reel Grrls board of directors
