Volunteer Coordinator  News
Hi families,
You may have noticed that this area looks a little different.  Based on your feedback,  we wanted to streamline information and avoid the duplication that seemed to happen frequently when we had separate notes.  What you will see in this space going forward is a list of items that we feel need the  most attention.  If there are items specific to either Elementary or Middle School you will see those at the bottom of the list.  We welcome your feedback and suggestions on the newsletter

Thanks,
Sharon and Jodi

In May and June more of our students and families will be biking and walking to school. Please use extra caution if you are driving in our school zones!   During drop off & pick up please remember to use the drop off zone on 18th and avoid driving in the bus zone on 19th.  Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our community safe!

6th grade Biography Night will be held on next Wednesday, May 21st!
The 6th grade students have been working very hard on their performances and it will certainly be an amazing evening. Feel free to bring extended family, friends and neighbors. All are welcome.  Editor's Note: This is a really fun event to bring kids of all ages to!  The kids work so hard to bring the subjects of their biographies to life, and it is really cool to watch!

Sales Volunteer Needed for Next Year
With our amazing Chinook Book and T-shirt coordinator Suzanne stepping into the role of FOSB Elementary Chair we need someone to take over Chinook book, Spirit Gear/T-shirt ordering and MIddle School Sports apparel. Chinook Book requires a few hours a week in Mid-August to get set up and then about 5 hours a week for the 4 weeks the sale goes on in September/October.  T-shirt ordering is a few hours here and there as shirts need to be ordered and the case needs to be spiffied up. The Middle School Sports Apparel is coordinated with MS Coaches and involves working with them to get orders from the team members and place them with our shirt company.  Interested? Have questions?  Email Sharon at slmaglianofe@seattleschools.org.

Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families,

I wanted to take a moment this week to follow-up on staffing changes within our community. Hopefully you all received an email from me last Friday sharing news that Karen recently made the decision to transfer to Jane Addams MS for the 2014-2015 school year to take on the challenge of building a front office from the ground up. I am working closely with the Jane Addams MS principal to put a transition plan in place so that neither school is left in limbo as we wrap up this school year and begin a new one. We will certainly miss Karen, but wish her well in her new position. If you are in the school office, please take a moment to wish Karen the best and thank her for all she has done in support of our students and families.

I also wanted to announce that Jodi Russell will be moving into the open Elementary Volunteer Coordinator position vacated by Sharon at the end of the school year . As we welcome several new faces, both in the volunteer coordinator and main office, I think this will leverage Jodi's elementary knowledge and experience while positioning her well to mentor and support our new staff members.  This means that we are currently seeking candidates for the Middle School Volunteer Coordinator position.  The job is open to any current Salmon Bay parent (both middle and elementary) and a  job description is attached to the Bulletin.

Finally, I would like to give a huge thank you to the many parents who showered our staff with coffee, treats, snacks and plants last week. You made all of us feel very appreciated.

Thanks,

Jen

Thanks to everyone who has turned in their Ballard Market receipts.  We have received $3800 from Ballard Market through the receipt program.  We will turn receipts in at least more time before school is out for summer.  There is still time to turn yours in.  Let's see if we can reach $5000 this year.

Bike to School Info for Middle Schoolers
New for middle school students!

Rally your robotics club, debate team, ultimate frisbee, or community service group to sign up as a team for Bike to School month. By tracking the number of minutes biked to school throughout May, your group will have the chance to earn an overnight bike trip with Cascade staff and instructors! Teams must have a minimum of 5 members, maximum of 12, and a faculty advisor to report rides. The team with the most accumulated minutes during Bike to School month will win the grand prize!  Trip date will be mutually determined with the winning team.

To register your team, have your parent or teacher email Shannon Koller at shannonk@cascadebicycleclub.org to create your team account.  You will log your minutes individually while helping your team accumulate minutes toward the team challenge.

Register

Middle and high school students register on Cascade's Bike to School website, reporting your number of minutes biked every week to school or around your neighborhood. Middle school students need to register with a parent's email address. Students who choose to compete will create a user name (not their full name) to protect your privacy. We will only use your email address to keep you informed about the challenge, to send you updates and reminders, or other relevant information.

You must enter your minutes in order to get credit for them!  You have until midnight on Wednesday to report your minutes for the previous week.  At the end of the month, we will tally the numbers, announce winners and award prizes!  Interested in tracking your miles too?  This online tool will help.

In case it doesn't work, here is the link above for registration : https://docs.google.com/a/cascadebicycleclub.org/forms/d/1nWdi_NLJb7AtrRtFh-etj-Gm3L8Tg_YnDlogQAjY90I/viewform

Reel Grrls Summer Opportunities

I am the President of the Board at Reel Grrls, the mother of a Reel Grrl and I deeply believe in our mission: To empower young women from diverse communities to realize their power, talent and influence through media production.

I'd like to introduce you to the amazing Tani Ikeda, one of the first Reel Grrls from over 10 years ago. She has made this powerful message to describe how Reel Grrls changes lives by activating grrls to dream further. I am inspired to know that there are hundreds of grrls out there whose lives have been changed by Reel Grrls programs since we began in 2001!

I am so excited to be offering a full line up of cool programs yet again this summer, and YET AGAIN on a pay what you can basis, so that every grrl can help create the RG magic that changes all of our lives through media literacy and media production.

Check out the programs at http://www.reelgrrls.org/programs.
