Volunteer Coordinator  News
Hi families,
You may have noticed that this area looks a little different.  Based on your feedback,  we wanted to streamline information and avoid the duplication that seemed to happen frequently when we had separate notes.  What you will see in this space going forward is a list of items that we feel need the  most attention.  If there are items specific to either Elementary or Middle School you will see those at the bottom of the list.  We welcome your feedback and suggestions on the newsletter

Thanks,
Sharon and Jodi

Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families,

As we head into our second week of MSP testing (Tues/Thurs), please support the kids by providing time for plenty of sleep, a healthy diet and words of encouragement. This makes for another long week, but I know that our students are prepared to do their very best.

I also want to remind families of the opportunity to provide me with written feedback regarding classroom placement for the 2014-2015 school year.

*Classroom Assignment Process:

-- opportunity for parent input regarding 2014-2015 class assignment--

In the near future, teachers will be re-organizing student groups for 2014-2015 classroom assignment. Our teachers spend many hours organizing classes, taking into consideration group dynamics as well as the individual needs of every child. Please trust the judgment of our teachers, as they know our students extremely well.

If there are any extraordinary circumstances that should be considered during this process, please write a letter explaining this to me to me so that I can share necessary information with teachers. Please note that requests for a specific teacher are not considered. Instead, this is an opportunity for you to provide us with information about your child that may help us best meet his/her needs for the upcoming year. Letters must be sent to me by Friday, May 9th.

Finally, please plan to attend Thursday night's monthly FOSB meeting at 7:00 p.m. in our library. We have a packed agenda and are hoping for as much school community input as possible. Topics include: budget, by-laws, volunteer appreciation and elections. Hope to see you there.

Let's have a great week together.

Thanks,

Jen

Assistant Principal's Note
Spontaneous Learning Opportunities...

Last week, while I was doing classroom walk throughs I found Christine's class heading outside with clipboards and math worksheets in hand.  Like young Athenian scholars, these students made their  way to the shade of an "olive tree" to take in the sun and fresh air and to expand their understanding of fractions.  Okay, so it was actually the pine tree between the lower and upper playfield.

Shortly after the students settled into the lesson, a shiny new black van with matte black and neon green decals pulled up to the curb.  Approximately eight semi dubious looking guys climbed out of the van and started towards the upper field.  I quickly sprang into action and intercepted this group.  The 'guys' turned out to be professional skaters traveling around the region looking for unique skating locations for a photography shoot.   After talking with them a little bit they agreed to give a mini-improv assemble about their career choice and how they make a living doing what they love to do.

I greatly appreciate the professionalism and time these guys shared with our students.  It is opportunities like these that motivate students to pursue their dreams!

Staff Appreciation Week

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK THIS WEEK.

Thanks to everyone who helped with coffee this morning.  It was such a nice way to kick off the week!  We have just a few other needs for our orga

Staff Appreciation Week!   It is time for the best week of the year for our fabulous staff.  Time to let them all know just how much we love and appreciate them by showering them with treats.  Here are the days we have planned for our staff and what we need from you is help fulfilling them.  Please use this link: tinyurl.com/sbsstaffapp

Monday- Coffee Delivery-  We need volunteers to go to local coffee shops, order coffees and deliver them to classrooms.  We can also use donations of coffee cards.

Tuesday- Breakfast Buffet-   Bring in your most delicious baked goods, fruit, quiche, juice etc.   The staff will enjoy a lovely breakfast made by the parents.  I need a few volunteers to come in early to clean and set up the staff lounge so when the food arrives it can be laid out for the staff to enjoy.

Wednesday -Staff Snack Bar - Bring in a little pick me up for our staff lounge.  Teachers can come in starting mid-morning to get a little refueling during the day.  We could use: Dried Fruit, Popcorn, Pretzels, Candy, Bottled Water, Cans of Soda, Granola Bars, anything you think would help a tired teacher make it through the day!  These should all be grab and go type items please!

Thursday- Potluck lunch- Bring in your favorite potluck lunch item and the staff get to have a lovely catered lunch.  This is one of the few times of the year that the staff will stop work and come to the staff lounge to sit down and enjoy a meal together.

Friday-  Potted plant day-  Bring in a potted plant, be it flower,  herb or vegetable and each staff member will get to bring home a lasting reminder of this wonderful week!

We have around 60 staff members so there are many opportunities for you to show your support.  Sign up to help here: tinyurl.com/sbsstaffapp

Bike to School Day is Wednesday, May 7th - Part of Bike to School Month!

National Bike to School Day is Wednesday, May 7!  We will hold a welcome party that morning in the Bike Alley behind the school.

Students who ride their bikes that morning in will receive a glow-in-the-dark bike wheel light courtesy of Cascade Bicycle Club.  We will also be selling the new "Salmon Bay Bikes" t-shirts to benefit all of the Walk/Bike/Schools events at Salmon Bay.

Our first "Dust Off Day" was a big success last Friday - a big thank you to all those who participated and to Bikesport, Top Banana and Ballard Market for donating their time and snacks.

Ballard Market Receipts

Thanks to everyone who has turned in their Ballard Market receipts.  We have received $3800 from Ballard Market through the receipt program.  We will turn receipts in at least more time before school is out for summer.  There is still time to turn yours in.  Let's see if we can reach $5000 this year.

Middle School Information
Bike to School Info for Middle Schoolers
New for middle school students!

Rally your robotics club, debate team, ultimate frisbee, or community service group to sign up as a team for Bike to School month. By tracking the number of minutes biked to school throughout May, your group will have the chance to earn an overnight bike trip with Cascade staff and instructors! Teams must have a minimum of 5 members, maximum of 12, and a faculty advisor to report rides. The team with the most accumulated minutes during Bike to School month will win the grand prize!  Trip date will be mutually determined with the winning team.

To register your team, have your parent or teacher email Shannon Koller at shannonk@cascadebicycleclub.org to create your team account.  You will log your minutes individually while helping your team accumulate minutes toward the team challenge.

Register

Middle and high school students register on Cascade's Bike to School website, reporting your number of minutes biked every week to school or around your neighborhood. Middle school students need to register with a parent's email address. Students who choose to compete will create a user name (not their full name) to protect your privacy. We will only use your email address to keep you informed about the challenge, to send you updates and reminders, or other relevant information.

You must enter your minutes in order to get credit for them!  You have until midnight on Wednesday to report your minutes for the previous week.  At the end of the month, we will tally the numbers, announce winners and award prizes!  Interested in tracking your miles too?  This online tool will help.
