Principal's Note
April 28, 2014

Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families,

Things sure are busy as we near the end of the 2013-2014 school year. For starters, MSP and MAP testing are upon us at the same time. Please support the kids by providing plenty of sleep, a healthy diet and words of encouragement. This makes for a long week, but I am confident that our students are prepared to do their very best. If your family is up to it, Tuesday and Wednesday evening's Poetry Nights offer an authentic and fun-filled opportunity for our students to celebrate their love for poetry. This event was lots of fun last year and can be a great way to relax and enjoy one another's company during a busy week of school.

Thanks,

Jen

Assistant Principal's Note

Tomorrow will be the first of four state testing days at Salmon Bay. Our teachers have diligently worked to prepare our students for this assessment.  This will be the last time that the state will utilize the Measure of Student Progress(MSP) assessment for writing, reading and math.   Over the next few weeks you may hear about the transition to a new assessment for next year; the Smarter Balance assessment.  The following links will direct you to additional information and resources about our state testing:

http://www.k12.wa.us/assessment/StateTesting/

http://www.k12.wa.us/smarter/

Below is our testing schedule and some points that may be helpful as you and your child prepare for each testing day.

Salmon Bay's MSP Schedule*

Apr. 29 Writing 1(4th & 7th Grade)

May 1 Writing 2 (4th & 7th Grade) and Science(5th & 8th Grade)

May 6 Reading (3rd-8th Grade)

May 8 Math  (3rd-8th Grade)

*Please note that all make-ups must be done by May 15th

Testing Day Strategies

* Make sure that your child is rested and eats breakfast.

* See that your child arrives at school on time and is relaxed.

* Encourage your child to do their best work possible.

* Do not send your child to school if he/she is ill.

* Please do not remove your child from school on test days for appointments.

Test Anxiety

Students may experience anxiety about testing and may experience heightened anxiety before a testing situation. A certain degree of test anxiety is normal and may help students prepare more effectively, work more efficiently, and remain focused during testing. Too much anxiety, however, can negatively affect performance. The following strategies may assist students, parents, and teachers in reducing test anxiety.

Parent Strategies for Reducing Test Anxiety

* Discuss the test openly and in a positive way.

* Have realistic expectations of your child's performance while encouraging his/her best efforts.

* Emphasize that the test is only one measure of academic performance.

* Emphasize that test scores do not determine a person's worth.

Thanks,
Brett

Staff Appreciation Week

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK MAY 6TH- 10TH

Staff Appreciation Week!   It is time for the best week of the year for our fabulous staff.  Time to let them all know just how much we love and appreciate them by showering them with treats.  Here are the days we have planned for our staff and what we need from you is help fulfilling them.  Please use this link: tinyurl.com/sbsstaffapp

Monday- Coffee Delivery-  We need volunteers to go to local coffee shops, order coffees and deliver them to classrooms.  We can also use donations of coffee cards.

Tuesday- Breakfast Buffet-   Bring in your most delicious baked goods, fruit, quiche, juice etc.   The staff will enjoy a lovely breakfast made by the parents.  I need a few volunteers to come in early to clean and set up the staff lounge so when the food arrives it can be laid out for the staff to enjoy.

Wednesday -Staff Snack Bar - Bring in a little pick me up for our staff lounge.  Teachers can come in starting mid-morning to get a little refueling during the day.  We could use: Dried Fruit, Popcorn, Pretzels, Candy, Bottled Water, Cans of Soda, Granola Bars, anything you think would help a tired teacher make it through the day!  These should all be grab and go type items please!

Thursday- Potluck lunch- Bring in your favorite potluck lunch item and the staff get to have a lovely catered lunch.  This is one of the few times of the year that the staff will stop work and come to the staff lounge to sit down and enjoy a meal together.

Friday-  Potted plant day-  Bring in a potted plant, be it flower,  herb or vegetable and each staff member will get to bring home a lasting reminder of this wonderful week!

We have around 60 staff members so there are many opportunities for you to show your support.  Sign up to help here: tinyurl.com/sbsstaffapp

Yearbook Photos Needed!

LAST OPPORTUNITY to send photos for the yearbook, DEADLINE APRIL 30.

There are several classes with no photos.  Due to lack of photos, the format will be change and there will be no individual class student life pages.  All the photos will be combined into a school student life section.  Even with the format change, we still are very low on photos. Please send in your favorite moments from this year. The photos need to be in high resolution and in focus in order to print well.  For single photos please send highest resolution possible to leestefanie@comcast.net . if you have several photos, please contact me at leestefanie@comcast.net

and I will give you simple directions to upload photos directly to the design pages. Thank you to everyone whom have or plan on supporting the yearbook this year
Librarian's Note

It's always so enjoyable to see how excited everyone gets at Book Fair time! A huge thank-you to all of the volunteers who stepped forward to help make this such a successful event! Our robust library collection would not exist without FOSB members, and their tireless support of our school. I feel so fortunate to work with such a dedicated group! I wanted to extend a special thanks to Sherry, Audrey and Brooke. Taking on a project like the Book Fair is a huge commitment, and they did a fabulous job!

As we enter the last few weeks of school, the library will be a hopping place. First up, Poetry Night this coming Tuesday and Wednesday! This is one of my favorite events of the year, where we gather just for the enjoyment of reading, reciting and listening to poetry. It can even get a bit raucous, believe it or not!

Lastly, let me know if you have any questions or concerns about missing or overdue books. Please remember that, unlike SPL, we don't charge daily fines for overdue books (so there's no fear of being presented with a bill when students return their overdue books.) We do, however, ask that any lost or damaged books be paid for. Again, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me: laillman@seattleschools.org

Happy Reading!

Linda
