Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families,

Welcome back. I hope everyone was able to enjoy a relaxing break with family and friends. I spent the first half of my break back home in North Carolina. Having finally caught up on some much needed rest, I am feeling very excited about the remaining weeks in our school year. The upcoming days will continue to be filled with exciting learning experiences in and out of the classrooms including poetry night, biography night, band performances, a science fair, the middle school Anne Frank production, a variety of camps and field trips and much, much more.

**SCHOOL NEWS FLASH**

*Kudos:

Katie Hayes, one of our 6th grade teachers, was recently awarded a scholarship to study abroad in Turkey this summer! Please join me in congratulating Katie on this achievement. She is already planning a number of creative ideas for how to use her summer learning experience to enhance her social studies curriculum.

*Classroom Assignment Process:

-opportunity for parent input regarding 2014-2015 class assignment-

In the next few weeks, teachers will be re-organizing student groups for 2014-2015 classroom assignment. Our teachers spend many hours organizing classes, taking into consideration group dynamics as well as the individual needs of every child. Please trust the judgment of our teachers, as they know our students extremely well.

If there are any extraordinary circumstances that should be considered during this process, please write a letter explaining this to me to me so that I can share necessary information with teachers. Please note that requests for a specific teacher are not considered. Instead, this is an opportunity for you to provide us with information about your child that may help us best meet his/her needs for the upcoming year. Letters must be sent to me by Friday, May 9th.

*Staffing news:

One of our middle school teachers, Kate Davis, accepted a teaching position at Jane Addams MS for the 2014-2015 school year. While we are certainly sad about Kate's upcoming departure from Salmon Bay, we are excited about this next step in her career as she works alongside other new hires to kick off the opening of a new middle school program. Kate's LA position will be posted in the upcoming weeks and interviews will be offered to internal candidates who are interested in teaching at Salmon Bay K-8. I will be working with our parent BLT reps regarding the interview process so that we can ensure parent voice in the process.

As you know, the staff voted to create an instructional coaching position (curriculum specialist) for the 2014-2015 school year. Beginning next year, Heather Wixom's special education caseload will be reduced to allow her the opportunity to serve in this important role. Heather is excited about the opportunity to work with our K/5 classroom teachers in this new capacity. Her experience with standards based planning, curriculum coaching and instructional differentiation make her a great fit for this role and I'm looking forward to seeing the results of her collaborative work with our teachers.

A recent budget adjustment at the district level resulted in a 1.0 FTE loss for Salmon Bay, meaning that we are back to having only 1 counselor position for the upcoming school year. The loss of this position is very unfortunate and presents great challenges. With enrollment nearing 700 students, we know this staffing reduction will greatly impact student services. Markos and I will continue to brainstorm adjustments to our current counseling model so that we can best meet the needs of our school community.

*Current work:

Thanks to FOSB's generous auction fundraising, our teachers are in the process of developing and proposing professional development plans for the 2014-2015 school year. Two common themes aligned with our Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) include:

  • The continued implementation of Responsive Classroom and Advisory practices and
  • Standards-based planning that offers differentiated instruction through a project-based/performance assessment approach.

Thanks,

Jen

Elementary Volunteer Coordinator's Note
Welcome back!  I hope you all had a restful break.  Can you believe that there are a mere two months of school left?  I will be preparing a calendar of all of the end of the year activities to share with you within the next few weeks.

Teacher appreciation week is a mere two weeks away! (May 5 - 9). This is one of the favorite weeks of the year for our community! Our staff loves being spoiled and we parents love to make it a magical week!  There are many ways to participate, please check out the All School Information section for descriptions of all the fun we have planned.  You can sign up to help out at this link :http://tinyurl.com/SBSstaffapp

This week is our Spring Book Fair!  You can shop everyday from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm right here in the school library, a portion of the proceeds benefits Salmon Bay's Library program. Thursday we will host Family Fun Night at the Book fair from 6-9.  Join us for some shopping and activities for all ages!

Next week on the 29th and 30th we are hosting our Annual Poetry Nights in the Library.  This beloved Salmon Bay traidition is a great way to expose your kids to the wonderful world of poetry.  You can recite a poem you've memorized, you can read a favorite poem, or you can show off some of your own poetic masterpieces!  Everyone is welcome to share a poem, from our littlest Kindergarteners to Grandmoms and Grandpops!  For more info see the blurb in the All School Section.

If you haven't yet watched the training video on recognizing and reporting Adult Sexual Misconduct please do so at this link: http://www.seattleschools.org/modules/cms/pages.phtml?pageid=307222 and then record your completion of the course here:http://tinyurl.com/sbssexualmisconduct  This is REQUIRED for anyone going to an overnight camp.  You only have to do it once, ever.

Our Science Fair is coming up on May 13.  We need some volunteers to help with set up and take down.  If you can help out please email Dana Riley Black at danarileyblack@ymail.com. For more information on the Science Fair see the Elementary News section.

Have a great rest of the week,
Sharon
Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note
Welcome back! I hope you all enjoyed your spring break and found some time to relax with family and friends. It's hard to believe that we have just two months left in this school year. I am currently working to finalize the list of year end activities and important dates, and will hopefully share that with you next week.

We do have an important event quickly approaching that I would like to highlight today. Staff Appreciation Week will be held May 5th thru 9th this year.  During this week we plan a variety of activities (morning coffee delivery, snack bar, potluck lunch etc.) to show  the Salmon Bay staff just how much we appreciate all they do for our students and families. Volunteers can participate in a variety of ways including donating coffee cards, preparing a potluck dish, donating potted plants or helping with set-up and clean-up.  Additional information (and a chance to sign-up) is available in the all school section of the bulletin.

This week we are also hosting the spring book fair in the school library. Your and/or your student can stop by to browse and purchase books.  Books are provided by The Secret Garden and a percentage of sales is donated back to our school library so that Linda can purchase new resources for our students.  You can find more information in the all school section of the bulletin. I also want to say "thanks" to the Salmon Bay parents who are organizing and staffing the book fair this week.

Our annual poetry nights will be held next week on Tuesday, April 29th and Wednesday, April 30th at 7:00 p.m. in the library. All staff, students and families are welcome to participate.  Also note that May is National Bike to School Month. This year's theme is "Wheels in Motion" which highlights the connection between health, physical activity and academic achievement . Join students at Salmon Bay and throughout Seattle who are participating. Watch for additional details in the Bulletin.

Finally, I have a new district email address to share with you! Please feel free to contact me at jrrussell@seattleschools.org

Have a good week,

Jodi

Elementary Science Fair
Salmon Bay 2014 Elementary Science Fair

I Notice . . .
the days are getting longer as we head into spring.

I Wonder . . . if Salmon Bay will host a Science Fair this spring as it has done in years past.

No need to wonder on this topic any longer!  Salmon Bay's 2014 Elementary Science Fair is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13.  All Salmon Bay 4th and 5th grade students are engaged in Science Investigation projects that will be showcased on May 13.

To families of K-3 grade students, consider engaging in some "Notice and Wonder" activities over spring break towards designing a science fair project.

Staff Appreciation Week

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK MAY 6TH- 10TH

Staff Appreciation Week!   It is time for the best week of the year for our fabulous staff.  Time to let them all know just how much we love and appreciate them by showering them with treats.  Here are the days we have planned for our staff and what we need from you is help fulfilling them.  Please email us and let us know what you would like to help with.

Monday- Coffee Delivery-  We need volunteers to go to local coffee shops, order coffees and deliver them to classrooms.  We can also use donations of coffee cards.

Tuesday- Breakfast Buffet-   Bring in your most delicious baked goods, fruit, quiche, juice etc.   The staff will enjoy a lovely breakfast made by the parents.  I need a few volunteers to come in early to clean and set up the staff lounge so when the food arrives it can be laid out for the staff to enjoy.

Wednesday -Staff Snack Bar - Bring in a little pick me up for our staff lounge.  Teachers can come in starting mid-morning to get a little refueling during the day.  We could use: Dried Fruit, Popcorn, Pretzels, Candy, Bottled Water, Cans of Soda, Granola Bars, anything you think would help a tired teacher make it through the day!  These should all be grab and go type items please!

Thursday- Potluck lunch- Bring in your favorite potluck lunch item and the staff get to have a lovely catered lunch.  This is one of the few times of the year that the staff will stop work and come to the staff lounge to sit down and enjoy a meal together.

Friday-  Potted plant day-  Bring in a potted plant, be it flower,  herb or vegetable and each staff member will get to bring home a lasting reminder of this wonderful week!

We have around 60 staff members so there are many opportunities for you to show your support.  Please let us know if you are participating, so that we can fill in any gaps if we are short volunteers.  If you have questions or comments or to volunteer to help out with this fun filled week please email.

May is Walk/Bike to School Month

May is fast approaching, and plans are in motion on the FOSB Walk/Bike committee to support biking to school and active families!

Kids across the city will be biking to school throughout May-National Bike to School Month. This year's theme is "Wheels in Motion" which highlights the connection between health, physical activity and academic achievement. When kids bike to school, they arrive awake and ready to learn.

You and your child are invited to participate in the Bike to School Month Challenge at Salmon Bay! This year, we are tracking of the number of minutes kids bike to school or elsewhere during Bike to School Month (as opposed to miles or roundtrips). The intention is to encourage families to be active together, no matter how far from school they live. We recognize that not every family can bike to school, so minutes spent biking to sports practice, the library, tutoring, etc. can also be counted.

More information and a calendar to help you track your child's activity will be coming home with your child in the next week.  Please take a look at that information and stay tuned for more here in the Bulletin - we have some fun events in the works. And finally, if you are bike-minded and interested in volunteering for Bike to School events, please contact Walker Lockhart (walkerlockhart@gmail.com) or Karen Dugan (karen@nixnux.org)."

This Week: Spring Book Fair

Hours are 8am to 3pm everyday, and there is an evening event on April 24th, Family Fun Night at the Book Fair, 6pm to 9pm.  There will be activities for all!

If you can't make it in to school for the book fair, you can shop at the Secret Garden and still help the library.  Just mention that you are shopping for Salmon Bay, and the Secret Garden will apply the purchase to our book fair.

The total amount that we spend at the book fair will determine the percentage that Linda will get back to add books to our library.  The more we sell, the more Linda gets to spend!

We also need many volunteers to make this event a success.  Check out the Sign Up genius form here: http://tinyurl.com/SpringBookFair14 and see if any of the 1 hour slots work for your schedule!

Poetry Nights - TIME TO RHYME

(...but they don't have to)!

Do you love to write and/or read poetry?  April is National Poetry Month, so we will be gathering on TWO evenings to indulge our poetic passion.  On TUESDAY, April 29th and/or WEDNESDAY, April 30th, bring a poem (written by you or someone else) to share.   All SB students, staff and families are welcome. Hope to see you at 7:00pm in the library on one night ... or both!  - Nancy and Linda

District News
Elementary Math Adoption Committee Looking for Community Input

The Seattle Public Schools elementary math adoption committee work has reached a critical stage.  In looking to partner with parents and community to find the best possible math program for Seattle Public School students for the 2014-15 school year and beyond, the committee invites you to provide your thoughts and opinions.

The committee is excited to have three possible math programs as viable candidates:

  • enVision
  • Go Math!
  • Math in Focus

So how can you get involved and help?

You can provide direct feedback at one of our display locations. There will be forms prepared for you to fill out at each site, as well as forms online.  This is an opportunity to compare the programs and consider what type of program you think would be a good fit for your family and community, and most importantly, for your student.

From April 1 through April 25, please come to one of these schools during the school day:

  • Catherine Blaine K-8, 2550 34th Ave W, 252-1920
  • Bryant Elementary, 3311 NE 60th St., 252-5200
  • Northgate Elementary, 11725 1st Ave NE, 252-4180
  • West Seattle Elementary, 6760 34th Ave SW, 252-9450
  • Wing Luke Elementary, 3701 S Kenyon St., 252-7630

Or visit the Douglass-Truth Public Library, 2300 E Yesler Way, during open hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. 206-684-4704

While the math committee prefers community members review the materials in person, we know that's not always an option. You can review materials online starting April 1. Visit http://bit.ly/MathAdoption2014

Secondly, if you would like to consider how well the programs align to the standards by which the students will be learning, the committee invites you to consider the transition to Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The state has adopted this new set of standards, which will replace Washington Performance Expectations in English/Language Arts and Mathematics beginning next year.  Your input is sought on how far you think these programs go to help your students, their teachers, and our community best meet the demands of these 21st century skills.

More information about the Common Core is available online at:

If you have any specific questions about how these programs were selected for the final round, please don't hesitate to email mathadoption@seattleschools.org.

Special Education

Families are invited to give feedback on Special Education services at Seattle Public Schools during two "Open Mic Night" meetings

Families of Seattle Public Schools are invited to join experts from Louisiana State University and the TIERS Group (Teams Intervening Early to Reach all Students) during two Open Microphone Nights to give feedback on Special Education Services.

Join us:

  • Tuesday, April 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Rainier Beach High School, 8815 Seward Park S., Seattle Washington 98118
  • Wednesday, April 23from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Nathan Hale High School, 10750 30th Ave NE, Seattle

Seattle Public School's Special Education Department is undergoing a Comprehensive Corrective Action Plan (C-CAP) to help improve results for our students in special education. As part of this plan, the department is working with experts from Louisiana State University and the TIERS Group for consultation on activities related to C-CAP targets.

They will be visiting the district the week of April 21 to collect data for initial analysis on the special education department. Part of their data collection will incorporate family input. Families are invited to give feedback verbally or in writing during this meeting. There will be a sign-in sheet for parents and they can leave comments, respond to a paper survey or stay and speak publically.

The sign in sheet will be used to determine the order in which people speak.  Individuals will be allowed three minutes each to speak and any other comments can be written and left with one of the TIERS team members.

Interpreters will be provided for Somali, Spanish, Vietnamese and Cantonese. If you need an American Sign Language interpreter please contact Mary Perrigo at mmperrigo@seattleschools.org for arrangements.

More information:

The purpose of C-CAP is to provide guidance for the district to make significant improvement in the following target areas:

  • Establish and implement an effective, equitable, and systemic strategic plan for the provision of a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) to students eligible for special education and related services at the district level in full compliance with corresponding federal and state regulations;
  • Create and maintain a uniform mechanism for special education program and fiscal accountability which includes a centralized system of internal controls and informed decision-making;
  • Recruit, hire, and maintain stable leadership for special education at the district level;
  • Voluntarily redirect the use of federal special education funding (up to 15%) to ensure adequate implementation of an OSPI approved Comprehensive Corrective Action Plan.
City of Seattle Hazard Reduction Survey

The following is from the city of Seattle regarding its survey: How Should the City Spend Your Money on Hazard Reduction?

The city of Seattle is looking for your input on what hazards worry you most. Earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, snow and ice storms, terrorism are just a few of the hazards that the city can experience.

How should the city use limited financial resources to reduce the impacts from the city's natural and man-made hazards? There are many ways to reduce the impacts, such as regulations, slope stabilization, and public education. The Seattle Office of Emergency Management is updating the existing 2009 Hazard Mitigation Plan. It wants to know what you think.

Three ways to tell us:

What you think matters to us. With your participation, we can identify the hazards we should plan for and take actions to reduce the impacts when the hazards strike. Share your thoughts with us by April 23, 2014.
