April 7, 2014
Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families,
It's nice to know we're rounding the bend as we head into the final months of the school year. The past month has been especially busy due to various staffing and budget challenges. Throughout the entire process, however, I have been incredibly thankful for the encouragement offered through our school community. I especially want to thank FOSB for its generous support in assisting us with our budget and for raising funds to support professional development opportunities for the upcoming school year.
When I slow down enough to make time for much needed reflection, I am truly able to see the progress we are making toward our vision. We recently completed our Comprehensive School Improvement Plan and are in the process of making final edits on the Graduate Profile that we began developing with Envisions Learning Partners at the beginning of the school year. I am proud of the collective effort that went into developing each of these documents and am looking forward to sharing information with you about their purpose so that you have an understanding of how these documents will guide us in achieving our vision.
Let's have a great week together.
Thanks, Jen

Brian's Class released salmon today.
|
As I type my newsletter, I look out my window and see a
beautiful spring day. The sun is out, flowers are in bloom, trees and shrubs are budding and birds are singing all about it! Over the last several months,
Carita's kindergarten class and Brian's fourth grade class have hatched and cared for small salmon fry. Today is the first of two extra special days, as Brian is leading his 5th grade class to Carkeek Park to release the baby salmon.
The month of April is a certainly a special month as we celebrate Mother Earth. The entire month has officially been named 'Earth Month;' however, I like to think of every month as being Earth Month. Several Salmon Bay classes are looking at additional ways to create awareness and appreciation for our precious and increasingly fragile plant. We encourage our Salmon Bay families to join our local and global communities as we show our appreciation for for the natural environment around us. Below are just a few ideas that Katie's sixth grade service class brainstormed of how families can help make a difference:
Earth Day activities for everyone to enjoy all year long!
Plant a Tree
Shop for seasonal and local produce
Decrease waste
Bike to school
Clean up and prevent litter
Walk or Bike to "anywhere!"
Reuse and Upcycle Old Things
Pick Up Trash
|
Turn off unused lights
Use real plates, cups and silverware.
Electric, hybrid Car
Compost Food Waste
Build a Worm Bin
Share or shop for 'hand-me-down' clothing
Plant a garden
Use Carpool or Mass Transit

Thanks, Brett |

Many of our classes are getting ready to go to camp in the nest few weeks. As we announced a few months ago, the fingerprinting requirement has been dropped unless you have lived in Washington for under two years. If you are a
newer Washington resident and you are planning on accompanying your student to an overnight camp, please contact me as soon as possible and I can give you information on how to get fingerprinted.
ALL ADULTS WHO ARE ACCOMPANYING KIDS TO AN OVERNIGHT CAMP :
You need to watch the video on recognizing and reporting Adult Sexual Misconduct. The video can be viewed at this link:
Once you have completed the training, you need to fill out the required information at the end so that the district has a record of your completion. You also need to fill out Salmon Bay's Form so that we have an accessible and up to date list of who has
ncompleted the course. That can be found here:
Here is a complete list of what is required for camp chaperones:
- Background Check Form
- Copy of ID or Driver's License
- Copy of current Auto Insurance Card (if driving)
- Completion of Adult Sexual Misconduct Course
The ASM Video seems to slow down when a lot of parents are accessing it at once, so if you have an issue try again a little later. And if you know you will be chaperoning, view it as soon as possible to avoid the last minute rush. You only have to take the training once; it's good for your entire time at Salmon Bay. I would also recommend viewing the video away from smaller children.
Our Spring Book Fair will be held from April 21st to 25th in the school library. See the All School Section of the bulletin for more information.
Next week is Spring Break! There is no school from Monday April 14 - Friday, April 18. We will see you on Monday, April 21.
Planning has begun for the Elementary Science Fair. Fourth and Fifth graders will participate as part of their curriculum, and the K-3 scientists are welcome to join in on the fun! A registration form is attached to the bulletin, those can be returned to your child's teacher. Look for more info in the Elementary School News section below and after Spring Break.
Please join us at 2 PM on Thursday as we get a chance to give Anthony his official send off. We will begin at approximately 2:05 on the 3rd floor and work our way down to the first floor. Anthony will be provided with a basket to collect cards and notes as he goes down the halls. Students will line the halls outside of their classrooms as Anthony makes his way around.Students and staff are encouraged to wear Hawaiian themed clothes. Please feel free to bring a note or card for Anthony and join us!
Our Monthly FOSB Meeting is this Thursday at 7:00 PM in the Library. Everyone who has a student at Salmon Bay is already a member or FOSB with voting privileges. We love seeing new faces! Look at the FOSB section below for more information and I hope to see you there!
Teacher appreciation week is coming up soon in the first week of May. This is one of the favorite weeks of the year for our community! Our staff loves being spoiled and we parents love to make it a magical week! Look for more information after spring break.
Have a restful break,

Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Hello families,
This week we will be saying an official farewell to Anthony Malaki, our school counselor. Anthony recently left Salmon Bay and joined the counseling staff at Mercer Middle School. This Thursday, April 10th, Anthony will be at Salmon Bay so we can acknowledge his many years of service and thank him for the care and support he has given our students and families. Our ASB students have planned a luau/ serenade that will take place from 2:00 - 2:30 p.m. Beginning on the third floor of our building, Anthony will walk through the halls to collect notes and cards while students line the hallways outside of their classrooms to wish him farewell. He will continue to work his way through the building and down to the first floor. Students are encouraged to wear Hawaiian clothing as well as write a card or note if they desire.
Our Spring Book Fair will be held from April 21st to 25th in the school library. Volunteers are needed! Purchases at the book fair or from Secret Garden help support our school library. See the All School Section of the bulletin for more information.
Save the date for Teacher Appreciation Week, May 5th through 9th. There will be a different appreciation each day of the week and a variety of ways for you to be involved. Look for specific plans following break and help us show our talented staff how much we appreciate them!
Other calendar notes for this week include a FOSB Finance Committee meeting this evening at 7:00 p.m. in the school library and April's monthly FOSB meeting on Thursday at 7:00 in the library. Everyone is welcome to attend! And of course, next week is Spring Break. When school resumes, I will share a list of important dates and activities for the remaining two months of school. It's always a gallop to the end!
Have a good week and a relaxing spring break,
Jodi

Elementary Science Fair
Salmon Bay 2014 Elementary Science Fair I Notice . . . the days are getting longer as we head into spring. I Wonder . . . if Salmon Bay will host a Science Fair this spring as it has done in years past. No need to wonder on this topic any longer! Salmon Bay's 2014 Elementary Science Fair is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13. All Salmon Bay 4th and 5th grade students are engaged in Science Investigation projects that will be showcased on May 13. To families of K-3 grade students, consider engaging in some "Notice and Wonder" activities over spring break towards designing a science fair project. Please find a science fair sign up sheet attached. More information to come after spring break.

Spring Book Fair (Hosted in our School Library)
It's that time of year again, time for the spring book fair! The dates are April 21st to 25th. Hours are 8am to 3pm everyday, and there is an evening event on April 24th, Family Fun Night at the Book Fair, 6pm to 9pm. There will be activities for all!
If you can't make it in to school for the book fair, you can shop at the Secret Garden and still help the library. Just mention that you are shopping for Salmon Bay, and the Secret Garden will apply the purchase to our book fair.
The total amount that we spend at the book fair will determine the percentage that Linda will get back to add books to our library. The more we sell, the more Linda gets to spend!
We also need many volunteers to make this event a success. Check out the Sign Up genius form here: http://tinyurl.com/SpringBookFair14 and see if any of the 1 hour slots work for your schedule!

After-school drama opportunity for 5th and 6th grade students
The Salmon Bay Drama Committee, in partnership with Jet City Improv, is organizing a six-week Improv Class for 5th and 6th grade students of Salmon Bay. Classes are two-hours long and will be held for six weeks on Wednesday afternoons after school beginning April 23. There will also be a final evening showcase, on Wednesday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m.
Class size is limited to 15 students. Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. Registrations will be considered complete once the attached registration form and $50 fee have been submitted to the Drama Committee Mailbox in the main office. Forms may also be picked up in the volunteer coordinators' office. Deadline for registration is Monday, April 21.
Jet City Improv provides the highest quality improv training available to middle school and high school students. Students discover the basic vocabulary and technique of improv through scenes and games in a fun, welcoming environment. When students learn to improvise, they learn valuable skills such as public speaking, confidence in front of an audience, teamwork, communication, and creative problem solving.
*Note - Improv requires spontaneous responses and a comfort with unpredictability.
For more information, please contact Drama Committee co-chairs, Lori Mudge and Edith Fuchs at lorimudge@comcast.net and edith.fuchs@gmail.com.

Elementary Math Adoption Committee Looking for Community Input
The Seattle Public Schools elementary math adoption committee work has reached a critical stage. In looking to partner with parents and community to find the best possible math program for Seattle Public School students for the 2014-15 school year and beyond, the committee invites you to provide your thoughts and opinions.
The committee is excited to have three possible math programs as viable candidates:
- enVision
- Go Math!
- Math in Focus
So how can you get involved and help?
You can provide direct feedback at one of our display locations. There will be forms prepared for you to fill out at each site, as well as forms online. This is an opportunity to compare the programs and consider what type of program you think would be a good fit for your family and community, and most importantly, for your student.
From April 1 through April 25, please come to one of these schools during the school day:
- Catherine Blaine K-8, 2550 34th Ave W, 252-1920
- Bryant Elementary, 3311 NE 60th St., 252-5200
- Northgate Elementary, 11725 1st Ave NE, 252-4180
- West Seattle Elementary, 6760 34th Ave SW, 252-9450
- Wing Luke Elementary, 3701 S Kenyon St., 252-7630
Or visit the Douglass-Truth Public Library, 2300 E Yesler Way, during open hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. 206-684-4704
While the math committee prefers community members review the materials in person, we know that's not always an option. You can review materials online starting April 1. Visit http://bit.ly/MathAdoption2014
Secondly, if you would like to consider how well the programs align to the standards by which the students will be learning, the committee invites you to consider the transition to Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The state has adopted this new set of standards, which will replace Washington Performance Expectations in English/Language Arts and Mathematics beginning next year. Your input is sought on how far you think these programs go to help your students, their teachers, and our community best meet the demands of these 21st century skills.
More information about the Common Core is available online at:
If you have any specific questions about how these programs were selected for the final round, please don't hesitate to email mathadoption@seattleschools.org.

Notes from the Chair
This Thursday, folks interested in joining the board as elected directors -- and those interested in nominating others -- will join a slate of directors to be elected in May. We'll also vote on the vacant elementary school co-chair's position and our sole candidate, Suzanne Waller, will be on hand to introduce herself before we proceed with that vote. We're pleased to welcome Brian Dougherty, Senior Transportation Planner from the City of Seattle, who will provide an update on curb improvements on NW 65th. Our bylaws committee will share their idea for new standing committees at FOSB (see attached), and our finance committee will be on hand to provide an update about progress they're making towards forming the 2014/15 budget. We'll enjoy time to hear some details about our school continuous school improvement plan (C-SIP), and also discuss a new middle school "guild" that aims to welcome new 6th grade parents in a different way next year and provide pathways for their involvement at school and in their students' lives. Please join us! Questions and comments to Robin Lofstrom (clevelandette@gmail.com).

Elementary Chair Election Update
After a period of reflection, Michelle Pearson has decided to focus her volunteer energies in a different capacity and has withdrawn her name from consideration for the open position. Suzanne Waller is now currently the only candidate for FOSB Elementary Chair. Please join us for the April Meeting on Thursday, April 10th, when we will vote on filling this vacancy. Suzanne has provided a short bio so that those of you in our community who do not know her can learn a bit more about her prior to the election.
---
My name is Suzanne Waller. My daughter Penny is in Kim's 3rd grade class this year. I work part time as a babysitter. The rest of my time is spent here at school and at home with Penny, my husband Byron, his dad Bud and our 2 dogs and 4 cats.
Since my daughter started Kindergarten 3 ½ years ago, I have been an active volunteer. I've attended the majority of FOSB meetings, becoming a director when I took over the Scrip program halfway through my first year. I managed Scrip for 2 ½ years and took the lead on ordering t-shirts and sweatshirts last year. I started the Hospitality Committee this year. I chaired the auction two years in a row and mentored the chair this year as well as managed procurement. I often give the Volunteer Coordinators moral and practical support. I have participated in the budget and mini grant committees, so have an understanding of how FOSB's budget process works to supplement and enhance the Principal's budget.I love being a part of a group of people with a purpose. I love being surrounded by people with ideas and then working with them and others to find ways to make those ideas happen. I love knowing what is going on in the school and in our community at Salmon Bay. I can't be actively involved in everything, but being in the know is important to me and I love to step in to help when I can, wherever it may be. This is my community and I want to be active in it's progress and vitality. Our kids spend many years at Salmon Bay. Creating and maintaining a positive community feeling is important to me, especially since we've all chosen to be here.Being involved with different committees and activities has made me excited about the big picture-- how all the different parts of our community work together and how I can continue to be a part of it in a new way, and that is why I'd like to volunteer as the FOSB elementary co- chair.
