Assistant Principal's Note
|
A large component of the Salmon Bay vision is to provide students with a challenging, integrated and experiential learning environment. This portion of our vision is often realized by moving the learning beyond the walls of Salmon Bay through field trips and camp experiences.
This morning, Kim and Marilyn's third grade classes left for the Camp Colman in Longbranch, Washington. For the next three days students will participate in Outdoor Environmental Education classes that highlight experiential learning through environmental, challenge, and outdoor education projects and activities.
This is the first of seven spring camps in which Salmon Bay students will participate. These camps are collaboratively coordinated by teachers, parents and camp staff. This extended learning community helps increase academic achievement and improves relationships.
The following list highlight our camps this spring: 8th Grade Camp - Camp Orkila 5th Grade Camp - Islandwood 4th Grade Camp - Camp Seymour 3rd Grade Camp - Camp Coleman 2nd Grade Camp - Camp Indianola 1st Grade Camp - Camp Indianola Kindergraden Day Camp - Edmonds Marina Park
These experiential learning opportunities would not be possible without the considerable effort put in by our parent community. We greatly appreciate all of your time and effort. Thanks, Brett

Our third grade classes left for Camp Coleman this weekend! The start of camp season has begun. Improvements to 65th NW on Display in Lobby
We now have two posters on display in the lobby demonstrating the safety improvements the city is planning on making around our school. Brian Dougherty, our contact at the City of Seattle is tentatively scheduled to attend our April FOSB meeting to answer your questions.
NW 65th Street is about to get safer!
The Seattle Department of Transportation is making safety improvements to our school crosswalk at NW 65th Street and 18th Avenue NW.
These changes will improve safety for everyone who uses the street. Construction is scheduled for this summer. Here's what they're planning to do:
- Install curb bulbs on all corners of the intersection to shorten the distance for pedestrians crossing the street.
- Build new curb ramps to make the sidewalk more accessible to people with disabilities as well as people with strollers and kids on bikes.
- Mark the crosswalks for pedestrians at each corner
This work is funded by Seattle's Safe Routes to School program, which makes it safer and more comfortable for kids and families to walk and bike to school.
These improvements are currently at 90 percent design. Construction is planned for summer 2014 during summer break.

Improv Workshop for 5th and 6th Graders
After-school drama opportunity for 5th and 6th grade students
The Salmon Bay Drama Committee, in partnership with Jet City Improv, is organizing a six-week Improv Class for 5th and 6th grade students of Salmon Bay. Classes are two-hours long and will be held for six weeks on Wednesday afternoons after school beginning April 23. There will also be a final evening showcase, on Wednesday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m.
Class size is limited to 15 students. Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. Registrations will be considered complete once the attached registration form and $50 fee have been submitted to the Drama Committee Mailbox in the main office. Forms may also be picked up in the volunteer coordinators' office. Deadline for registration is Monday, April 21.
Jet City Improv provides the highest quality improv training available to middle school and high school students. Students discover the basic vocabulary and technique of improv through scenes and games in a fun, welcoming environment. When students learn to improvise, they learn valuable skills such as public speaking, confidence in front of an audience, teamwork, communication, and creative problem solving.
*Note - Improv requires spontaneous responses and a comfort with unpredictability.
For more information, please contact Drama Committee co-chairs, Lori Mudge and Edith Fuchs at lorimudge@comcast.net and edith.fuchs@gmail.com.

Gardening Committee Update
Well, we had a wonderful and productive work party this past Saturday! I was really impressed
by everyone's efforts and enthusiasm! I must say, the kids too, they were amazing and so helpful,
even a not so enthused 5th grade boy, was able to find something that, needed the assistance of an
adult, but he liked and his mood quickly changed and seeing that is what gets me excited about our
kids having time in a garden. Thank you so much for coming, for Jodi to suggest bringing her troop, that
made such a difference! With that as well, I am really proud and happy to be handing down the
"torch" to 2 new Garden Chairs, Laura and Rich, who have a 2nd and 4th grade daughters. I love
their enthusiasm, the love of gardening and bringing it to our kids. Laura also has 2 high school
kids at Ballard and is ready to inform those folks to join us, as these guys need community service hours
too! So, man, awesome! Then Gardening Committee is in good hands!
It was a lovely Saturday in deed. Our Tulips came up, but sadly, they have little to no STEMS!
Bummer! I learned that that can be caused to the cold and the fact that the growth was already
starting when a cold freeze hit them. So goes the life of gardening, maybe NEXT year will be different,
it can be! I'll be watching!
Alright, this is it!, my last Garden Committee letter! I have loved every minute of volunteering with
this group. I feel like my timing is just right, I got what I wanted done, well, almost! I forgot to divide
some day lilies to move to the other side! I will finish with that and then hopefully see familiar faces at the
next Garden work party!

Elementary Chair Election Update
We want to give you an update on the election for FOSB Elementary Chair: After a period of reflection, Michelle Pearson has decided to focus her volunteer energies in a different capacity and has withdrawn her name from consideration for the open position. Suzanne Waller is now currently the only candidate for FOSB Elementary Chair. Please join us for the April Meeting on Thursday, April 10th, when we will vote on filling this vacancy. Suzanne has provided a short bio so that those of you in our community who do not know her can learn a bit more about her prior to the election.
---
My name is Suzanne Waller. My daughter Penny is in Kim's 3rd grade class this year. I work part time as a babysitter. The rest of my time is spent here at school and at home with Penny, my husband Byron, his dad Bud and our 2 dogs and 4 cats.
Since my daughter started Kindergarten 3 ½ years ago, I have been an active volunteer. I've attended the majority of FOSB meetings, becoming a director when I took over the Scrip program halfway through my first year. I managed Scrip for 2 ½ years and took the lead on ordering t-shirts and sweatshirts last year. I started the Hospitality Committee this year. I chaired the auction two years in a row and mentored the chair this year as well as managed procurement. I often give the Volunteer Coordinators moral and practical support. I have participated in the budget and mini grant committees, so have an understanding of how FOSB's budget process works to supplement and enhance the Principal's budget.I love being a part of a group of people with a purpose. I love being surrounded by people with ideas and then working with them and others to find ways to make those ideas happen. I love knowing what is going on in the school and in our community at Salmon Bay. I can't be actively involved in everything, but being in the know is important to me and I love to step in to help when I can, wherever it may be. This is my community and I want to be active in it's progress and vitality. Our kids spend many years at Salmon Bay. Creating and maintaining a positive community feeling is important to me, especially since we've all chosen to be here.Being involved with different committees and activities has made me excited about the big picture-- how all the different parts of our community work together and how I can continue to be a part of it in a new way, and that is why I'd like to volunteer as the FOSB elementary co- chair.
