March 24, 2014
Elementary Volunteer Coordinator's Note
This is the last week to request tickets for Salmon Bay Night at the Mariners:
April 25th is our Salmon Bay Night at the Seattle Mariners.  We still have about half of our allotted tickets left, so if you haven't signed up yet, now is the time!  You can sign up at this link:  http://tinyurl.com/sbsMariners  Ticket requests will be honored until March 28th. If you need to send in a check please do that soon.

There is a FOSB coffee hour on Wednesday at 8:00 AM.  It's a chance for you to get to meet the candidates for Elementary FOSB Chair and to learn how the FOSB election will work.

Tomorrow (Tuesday Night) our PIE Committee is presenting "Math for Love: Nurturing the Math Instinct". This is a workshop geared toward parents of Pre-K up to 3rd grade.  Free child care at Coho Kids' Time is available, but you must call 297-7764 to reserve a spot.

We are seeking volunteers who can help us cut apart number tiles for use with our math curriculum. We have approximately 600 tiles to cut and sort. As soon as we complete this task, students will be able to start using these in our classrooms. If you have a little time and could cut apart a set of tiles, please stop by the volunteer coordinator offices. We'd greatly appreciate your help!

I am happy to announce that FOSB is now participating in Amazon Smile, Amazon's give back program.  If you already shop at Amazon you can use this link:  http://smile.amazon.com/ch/91-1622350 to make your purchases and FOSB will receive .5% of your purchase total.  They are running a promotion now through 3/31/14 where they will donate an extra $5 to Friends Of Salmon Bay when you make a purchase.

Brett and our Safety Committee have been working with the City of Seattle for just about a year now to have some safety upgrades made to NW 65th Street.  We have just gotten the word from the City that over the summer those changes will be implemented.  Please see the All-School section for more information.  And keep a lookout for a poster in the lobby illustrating the changes soon!  Thanks to Brett, AJ Silva and the Safety Committee for your work on this!

Camp is right around the corner and we are starting to cut checks to the camp facilities.  We can't make our camp program possible without our Enrichment Fee.  If you have yet to pay your enrichment fee you can do so at this link: tinyurl.com/enrichmentonetime1314  you can also bring a check to me.  If you need to make alternate payment arrangements, I need to hear from you ASAP.

The Copy Room is starting to look really nice (thanks, Jodi!).  There are still a few dishes and untensils hanging around from the auction and Pi Night.  At the end of this week they will be donated, so if you think something might be yours, come and claim it ASAP.

Have a great week!

NW 65th Street Improvements

NW 65th Street is about to get safer!

The Seattle Department of Transportation is making safety improvements to our school crosswalk at NW 65th Street and 18th Avenue NW.

These changes will improve safety for everyone who uses the street. Construction is scheduled for this summer.  Here's what they're planning to do:

  •  Install curb bulbs on all corners of the intersection to shorten the distance for pedestrians crossing the street.
  • Build new curb ramps to make the sidewalk more accessible to people with disabilities as well as people with strollers and kids on bikes.
  • Mark the crosswalks for pedestrians at each corner

This work is funded by Seattle's Safe Routes to School program, which makes it safer and more comfortable for kids and families to walk and bike to school.

These improvements are currently at 90 percent design. Construction is planned for summer 2014 during summer break.

School District News
Public Input Sought for Adoption of New District Math Curriculum

The Seattle Public Schools elementary math adoption committee work has reached a critical stage.  In looking to partner with parents and community to find the best possible math program for Seattle Public School students for the 2014-15 school year and beyond, the committee invites you to provide your thoughts and opinions.

The committee is excited to have four possible math programs as viable candidates:
*    enVision
*    Go Math!
*    Math in Focus
*    My Math
So how can you get involved and help?

You can provide direct feedback at one of our display locations. There will be forms prepared for you to fill out at each site, as well as forms online.  This is an opportunity to compare the programs and consider what type of program you think would be a good fit for your family and community, and most importantly, for your student.

From April 1 through April 25, please come to one of these schools during the school day:

*    Catherine Blaine K-8, 2550 34th Ave W, 252-1920
*    Bryant Elementary, 3311 NE 60th St., 252-5200
*    Northgate Elementary, 11725 1st Ave NE, 252-4180
*    West Seattle Elementary, 6760 34th Ave SW,
*    Wing Luke Elementary, 3701 S Kenyon St.,
Or visit the Douglass-Truth Public Library, 2300 E Yesler Way, during open hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. 206-684-4704

While the math committee prefers community members review the materials in person, we know that's not always an option. You can review materials online starting April 1. Visit http://bit.ly/MathAdoption2014

Secondly, if you would like to consider how well the programs align to the standards by which the students will be learning, the committee invites you to consider the transition to Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The state has adopted this new set of standards, which will replace Washington Performance Expectations in English/Language Arts and Mathematics beginning next year.  Your input is sought on how far you think these programs go to help your students, their teachers, and our community best meet the demands of these 21st century skills.

More information about the Common Core is available online at:

*    SPS Website - http://bit.ly/SPS-CommonCore
*    Common Core State Standards Initiative - http://www.corestandards.org/
*    National PTA site - http://bit.ly/NationalPTA-CommonCore

If you have any specific questions about how these programs were selected for the final round, please don't hesitate to email mathadoption@seattleschools.org.

Notes from the Chair

Please join us this Wednesday beginning at 8:00 am in the main lobby for FOSB's morning coffee. Come to learn more about our two candidates for the elementary school chair's position, Suzanne Waller and Michelle Pearson, and learn a little about elections and other matters we're excited about. At April's board meeting on April 10th, we'll be conducting our vote for that soon-to-be-vacant position, and hearing from others who are interested in nominating themselves or nominating another to join the board as a director, elementary school treasurer, or middle school building leadership team (BLT) rep. The morning coffee is a good time to learn about those positions, and your chairs will be on hand to answer any questions you have which the job descriptions we provided didn't answer. Thank you to Suzanne and Michelle for their interest! And please do join us on Wednesday!

Nurturing the Math Instinct in Our Kids with Math for Love

Tuesday, March 25, 2014, 7-9pm, School Cafetorium

We are all born with the capacity to love mathematics. This class explores how to cultivate a child's innate interest in mathematics by creating a culture of mathematics at home. Through puzzles and games that capture the quality of play in math, we'll learn how to think creatively, support each other, and keep the spark of joy alive and well in our mathematical lives. Presented by Dan Finkel and Katherine Cook of Math for Love. Check out mathforlove.com.
