Editor's Note: Jen and Brett are at JSCEE today at the district "Budget Arena".  They are working hard to get our school budget sorted out and approved.
Assistant Principal's Note
  Hello Salmon Bay families,

This has been a busy week at Salmon Bay and there are a couple successes I wanted to share.

Pi night was Friday 3/14 and we had a great turnout of families playing math games and eating pie together. I was even treated to my own pie in the face, which was lots of fun for everyone.

We also started our 7th and 8th grade clubs on Friday and they were a huge success. We had even more clubs than last time and with that we are able to see how these clubs effect our population positively. There are 3 main areas that I really see a positive effect on our kids.
  • The ability for students to connect with a caring adult in a small group is a very valuable asset. These groups are usually around 12-17 students which allows for quite a bit of individualized instruction.
  • We are also able to give more choices to our student population which means we are much more likely to have something that your student will be interested in.
  • These clubs also allow our 7th and 8th grade staff to have a common planning period in which to meet and discuss plans and issues.
We couldn't do any of this without all of our amazing community leaders who stepped up and offered their talents to lead these clubs and to them we want to say Thank you!

You can read more about these clubs at http://tinyurl.com/2semclub

Thanks, Brett

Elementary Volunteer Coordinator's Note

As you know, Caitlin (my Middle School co-hort) has stepped down from her position and has accepted a job in the main office as our Attendance Secretary.  I would like to take some space here in my note to express my gratitude for all she has done. She has acted as my mentor, my sometimes therapist, and my friend. I hope to emulate her grace under pressure and her remarkable ability to always know the right thing to say.  Caitlin, I thank you for all your effort on behalf of our students and staff.  I am super glad that you will be right next door for when that inevitable moment comes up when my only answer will be "I'll bet Caitlin knows".

I am excited to work with Jodi Russell going forward.  Jodi brings a familiarity and in-depth knowledge of the school to the MS Volunteer Coordinator position.  I expect that the transition period for our Middle School families will be smooth.  Welcome, Jodi!

April 25th is our Salmon Bay Night at the Seattle Mariners.  We still have about half of our allotted tickets left, so if you haven't signed up yet, now is the time!  You can sign up at this link:  http://tinyurl.com/sbsMariners  Ticket requests will be honored until March 28th.  More info is in the All School section below.

There is a Hospitality Committee sponsored coffee hour on Wednesday at 8:15.  We hope to see you there for tasty beverages and socializing.

Sharon
Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Hello middle school families,

I wanted to take a moment to share with you what an amazing experience this job has been for the last 3 years.    I have really loved being the middle school volunteer coordinator and being a part of this community is one of the main reasons why.  Being able to get to know the kids and the families while getting to work so closely with the staff has really been a dream job.  I also want to say thank you so much for all of your kind words and support over the years

I am really pleased to be transitioning into a position in the main office as attendance secretary where I can continue to be actively involved with the students, staff and families of Salmon Bay.  I will also be a parent here for 2 more years so will continue to be involved in that capacity.

I want to take this moment to introduce you to our new middle school volunteer coordinator,  Jodi Russell.   I am so pleased that Jodi  will be taking over from me and I know it will be a smooth transition.  She has been our elementary FOSB co chair for the last 3 years so has had lots of experience with our school.

Thanks again for these 3 wonderful years!

Caitlin

----

Greetings! I am excited to step into the role of middle school volunteer coordinator. Caitlin is certainly leaving behind some large shoes but I promise to do my best to fill them! For the past three years I have volunteered as the FOSB elementary co-chair (I have 1st and 4th grade daughters). I have loved volunteering on the FOSB Board, but am looking forward to supporting our volunteers and staff in this new role. Salmon Bay has such a wonderful, caring community and I feel very blessed to be part of it. I especially look forward to meeting more middle school families and to hearing how I can support your volunteer interests and needs. Please take a moment to stop by and introduce yourself or send me an email. I should have a district email address soon, but in the meantime I can be reached at reddsell@comcast.net

I also wanted to share two reminders with you this week.

First, our Hospitality Committee will be hosting a coffee hour this Wednesday at 8:15 am in the front lobby. Plan to stop by, grab a cup of coffee or a treat, and say hello.

Second, if you are interested in attending the Salmon Bay Night at the Seattle Mariners on April 25th, we still have tickets available. You can sign up at this link:  http://tinyurl.com/sbsMariners  Additional information can be found in the All School section of the Bulletin.
Have a great week,
Jodi

School District News
Public Input Sought for Adoption of New District Math Curriculum

The Seattle Public Schools elementary math adoption committee work has reached a critical stage.  In looking to partner with parents and community to find the best possible math program for Seattle Public School students for the 2014-15 school year and beyond, the committee invites you to provide your thoughts and opinions.

The committee is excited to have four possible math programs as viable candidates:
*    enVision
*    Go Math!
*    Math in Focus
*    My Math
So how can you get involved and help?

You can provide direct feedback at one of our display locations. There will be forms prepared for you to fill out at each site, as well as forms online.  This is an opportunity to compare the programs and consider what type of program you think would be a good fit for your family and community, and most importantly, for your student.

From April 1 through April 25, please come to one of these schools during the school day:

*    Catherine Blaine K-8, 2550 34th Ave W, 252-1920
*    Bryant Elementary, 3311 NE 60th St., 252-5200
*    Northgate Elementary, 11725 1st Ave NE, 252-4180
*    West Seattle Elementary, 6760 34th Ave SW,
*    Wing Luke Elementary, 3701 S Kenyon St.,
Or visit the Douglass-Truth Public Library, 2300 E Yesler Way, during open hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. 206-684-4704

While the math committee prefers community members review the materials in person, we know that's not always an option. You can review materials online starting April 1. Visit http://bit.ly/MathAdoption2014

Secondly, if you would like to consider how well the programs align to the standards by which the students will be learning, the committee invites you to consider the transition to Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The state has adopted this new set of standards, which will replace Washington Performance Expectations in English/Language Arts and Mathematics beginning next year.  Your input is sought on how far you think these programs go to help your students, their teachers, and our community best meet the demands of these 21st century skills.

More information about the Common Core is available online at:

*    SPS Website - http://bit.ly/SPS-CommonCore
*    Common Core State Standards Initiative - http://www.corestandards.org/
*    National PTA site - http://bit.ly/NationalPTA-CommonCore

If you have any specific questions about how these programs were selected for the final round, please don't hesitate to email mathadoption@seattleschools.org.

Nurturing the Math Instinct in Our Kids with Math for Love

Tuesday, March 25, 2014, 7-9pm, School Cafetorium

We are all born with the capacity to love mathematics. This class explores how to cultivate a child's innate interest in mathematics by creating a culture of mathematics at home. Through puzzles and games that capture the quality of play in math, we'll learn how to think creatively, support each other, and keep the spark of joy alive and well in our mathematical lives. Presented by Dan Finkel and Katherine Cook of Math for Love. Check out mathforlove.com.

Spring and Summer Day Camp Opportunities

Can trees really communicate?  Can you learn the ancient ways of the water people?  Can you discover the secrets of the Lost City?  Are you a member of the Tribe of the Hand?  What if Bigfoot is real?  Does another world really exist?

These are the questions from which adventures arise.   Take a heroic journey with Terra-Forma Education's Eco-Quest Spring and Summer Day Camp.  Youth ages 6-10 become immersed in complex stories, based on myths and legends that develop around them. Along the way they will meet characters, find and follow clues and work together to complete their journey. All adventures take place within the context of current environmental education issues that challenge the participants to explore and discover our interconnections with the Earth, while expanding their creative imaginations. The adventure runs from 9 am-4pm and meets at Licton Springs Park located at 9536 Ashworth Ave. N. or Seward park in South Seattle.  Scholarships are available!   For more information visit our website at www.terra-forma.us or call Caveman at 206-361-2133.

Ballard High K-5 soccer camps

The Ballard high school girls soccer team and staff will offer two week-long camps this year. The first will occur during spring break and the second will be during summer. Both camps are led by head coach Michelle Beattie and assistant coach Meghan Miller. Small groups will be coached by the girls team, allowing campers to interact with members from the Ballard program.

Our coaches have attended many camps and know the value it brings to each camper. All coaches and player-coaches are dedicated to creating a safe, fun and engaging camp. Camp curriculum is comprised of knowledge the coaches have acquired from their camp and coaching experiences, as well as actual training drills from Ballard practices and fun games.

Youth camps are offered to K-5th graders. Please note this camp is focused on soccer, where we will challenge campers to work hard, try new things and the importance of perseverance. We also talk about sportsmanship, respect for all campers, playing as a team and playing fair.

Both camps are a wonderful way for your son or daughter to tune up their soccer skills, make new friends, stay active and enjoy the world's game. We encourage you to sign your child up for both camps and bring friends, classmates and teammates along. It is a great way to build team chemistry during a week-long training session. We are happy to accommodate full teams and provide a discounted rate for groups more than eight. Please contact us for further information.
