March 10, 2014
Admin Note

March 10, 2014

Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families,

I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing weekend. If you are like me, it might take your bodies a day or two to adjust to the time change and "spring forward" once again. I found out late yesterday that my uncle is in town for a short business trip. I am excited to catch up on east coast family news and also look forward to sharing my love for Seattle with him.

As you know, I have spent the past couple of weeks immersed in meetings about the challenges presented by the district's budget and am working collaboratively with the staff to determine creative solutions for how to offset some of our cuts. Overall, I feel that we are going to be in a good position to support our students next year and I look forward to sharing details with you in the near future once things are more finalized.

Finally, we will host our 3rd annual Pi Night on Friday night from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and hope that you are able to come celebrate with us. We have lots of innovative math materials and activities to share and are hoping to have a great turnout as we have had in past years. Come join us in the cafetorium to find out what our kids are learning, to play some fun family math games, and to sample a variety of delicious pies.  If you're up for it, please bring a sweet or savory pie to add to our potluck!

Thanks,

Jen

Budgeting Update from Jen and Brett

March is SPS budget and staffing month. Our middle, K-8 and high schools have enormous budget challenges and this certainly impacts Salmon Bay K-8. I have provided a budget overview for our Building Leadership Team and staff and will present an overview for parents at Tuesday night's FOSB budget meeting and at Thursday night's general FOSB meeting.

A number of middle schools have experienced a drop in FTE for their counselor position(s). We lost a total of 1.0 FTE, the equivalent to one full time counselor. As you know, Anthony is transferring to Mercer later this month, meaning that Markos will serve as our head counselor. I have proposed a strategy for funding a part-time (50%) counselor to work alongside Markos next year and am working with Markos to determine job duties that can be shifted elsewhere so that he and a part time counselor can best serve our students and families.

Also, as did many other middle and high schools, SB K-8 also had its Librarian allotment reduced from 1.0 to .5 FTE, meaning we only received enough funding to have a half time librarian. Again, I worked with the staff to determine a creative strategy for supplementing this position to make it 1.0 (full time). Knowing that libraries serve as the hub of literacy in our schools, this is an essential position that offers a tremendous amount of support to students, staff and families.

In addition, we were shocked to learn that our office staffing has been cut from 3.0 full time staff to 2.5 full time staff (reflective of 50% cut in funding for clerical staff in SPS K-8, middle and high schools) meaning that our fiscal secretary position may be decreased. I was able to determine a method for maintaining this position full time but only through an hourly wage, meaning that insurance and benefits are only pro-rated based on the .5 FTE. Keep in mind please that the workload of the office will remain the same despite this challenge. This is an especially difficult cut to face because we recognize that the front office is the face of our school.

Finally, I am in the process of completing a mitigation report to request additional special education funding. Our current allotment indicates the loss of almost 2 FTE (2 full time positions) due to low enrollment numbers. Knowing that open enrollment was incomplete when these numbers were determined by the district, I am quite hopeful that this will be corrected (at least partially) and am confident that we will continue to provide our students with the best service possible. One other special education change to the 2014-15 budget is the expectation that each school that staffs 1:1 instructional assistants (IA) set aside $1,000.00 in their school based budget per IA. That new budget expectation is being discussed with the central office staff of special education but the current expectation is that we will provide the $1,000 from our building funds.

We encourage you to voice your comments and concerns about these cuts to the SPS School Board. The 2014-15 budgets for all schools will be finalized before the end of March. All the School Board members are listed at the bottom of this SPS web page. There is also an online petition that has been started to protest the cuts.

Thanks for your support.

Elementary Volunteer Coordinator's Note

I am so excited to have Jodi Russell join me as our Middle School Volunteer Coordinator in the very near future.  This means that we have an immediate need for a new Elementary FOSB chair. If FOSB leadership is something you've ever been interested in, now is a great time to do it. Jodi will be readily available to mentor the new chair through the transition. If you are interested or need more information you can email me at slmaglianofe@seattleschools.org or Jodi at reddsell@comcast.net

At the May meeting we elect our new officers and directors for the 2014-2015 school year.  We will need both a Middle School and an Elementary Treasurer, so if numbers are your thing, that may be something to think about.  We have an unlimited number of Directors.  Directors agree to attend a majority of FOSB meetings and stay up to date on FOSB issues.  In the event that the general assembly cannot reach consensus on an issue, the Directors vote.

There are still a few auction items that need to be picked up.  If you bought something and didn't get it, it's in my office.  I also have some potluck dishes here that are waiting to be reunited with their owners.

Our Annual Family Math Night is on Friday, which is also pi Day (3.14 - March 14! Get it!?)  We will have lots of math games and activities set up for all grade levels.  Bring sweet or savory pie to share, and join us!  Win Prizes!  This is your chance to see our very own Assistant Principal Brett get a pie to the face!

Also, at the end of the month  (March 25th) our Parent Information Eachange (PIE - not to be confused with pi) is hosting a Math for Love event.   Check out the FOSB section for more information on that event.

Our monthly FOSB meeting is this Thursday, March 13 at 7 PM in the Library.  If you have not yet joined us for a FOSB meeting, I encourage you to do so.  Anyone with a student at Salmon Bay is already a member, and we love seeing new faces.

Save the Date! On April 25th, we will have Salmon Bay Night at the Seattle Mariners!  The game is at 7:10 against the Houston Astros.  Tickets are $11 each for view reserved seats.  We will have sign up info available soon.

Congratulations to our fifth graders for a fabulous performance of "The Comedy of Errors".  It was fantastic!

Have a wonderfylweek!

Sharon
Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Hello Salmon Bay middle school families,

Well, another year of our WEP program has come to an end and what a great season it was.  Each year as a parent I am so thankful for all of the extra time and energy our teachers put into creating a program that has something for everyone.  These staff work long and unpaid hours to make sure that all of  our middle school students have an enriching experience and I want to send a huge thank you to them.   If your student did skiing or snowboarding and they are missing equipment or clothes there is a lost and found outside of Connie's room on the 3rd floor.

The 5th grade students finished their amazing run of Shakespeare's "A Comedy of Errors" and all reviews were two enthusiastic thumbs up!

Thursday is our monthly FOSB meeting and I hope you can join us.  It is held at 7:00 PM in the library and is always and interesting and informative 2 hours.

We are in serious need of a FOSB middle school treasurer.  Ours is stepping down after her term of service and if numbers are your thing and you are looking for a way to get more involved please email me and I can answer any questions you might have.

This Friday, March 14th (3.14) is "Pi Day" and Salmon Bay is celebrating with our annual Family Math night featuring math games with fabulous prizes, a chance to watch Brett get a pie in the face, and  potluck pie (savory and sweet!).   Come and join us in the cafeteria at 6:00 PM.

Have a great week,

Caitlin

Notes from the Co-Chairs

Please join us this Thursday for our monthly FOSB meeting, held from 7-9 p.n. in the school library. The agenda is attached to this Bulletin for your review. Much of our discussion this month will focus on financial issues. On the fundraising side, we will hear a report regarding our recent auction, and we will continue our tabled conversation regarding FOSB participation in the Amazon Smile Give back program. We'll also hear from Principal Jen regarding her budget allocation for the 2014 - 2015 school year and we will vote on FOSB funding to supplement her budget. Although the entire FOSB budget will not be completed, voting on this particular line item is important because it allows Jen to maximize our contributions, which stretches our dollars farther. Principal budgets are due at the end of the month, which is why we will focus on this particular line item first. The remainder of the FOSB budget will be discussed over the next several weeks and a draft budget will be presented at a future FOSB meeting.

We will also host a coffee hour on Thursday morning in the front lobby. This is a great opportunity to chat with other parents or ask questions. And did we mention the free coffee? We'd love to see you there. Please join us!

Presented by Dan Finkel and Katherine Cook of Math for Love. Check out mathforlove.com.

Ballard High School Performing Arts

Urinetown: The musical.

A hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, controlled by a single malevolent company that charges admission for a most basic human need. But amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough. Come see the result for yourself!

Performances will launch at the Opening Night Gala on Thursday March 6th, with the option of enjoying a pre-performance auction and dinner; and will run five more nights until March 15th. Order your tickets now at showtix4u.com.

Thank you!!

Ballard High K-5 soccer camps

The Ballard high school girls soccer team and staff will offer two week-long camps this year. The first will occur during spring break and the second will be during summer. Both camps are led by head coach Michelle Beattie and assistant coach Meghan Miller. Small groups will be coached by the girls team, allowing campers to interact with members from the Ballard program.

Our coaches have attended many camps and know the value it brings to each camper. All coaches and player-coaches are dedicated to creating a safe, fun and engaging camp. Camp curriculum is comprised of knowledge the coaches have acquired from their camp and coaching experiences, as well as actual training drills from Ballard practices and fun games.

Youth camps are offered to K-5th graders. Please note this camp is focused on soccer, where we will challenge campers to work hard, try new things and the importance of perseverance. We also talk about sportsmanship, respect for all campers, playing as a team and playing fair.

Both camps are a wonderful way for your son or daughter to tune up their soccer skills, make new friends, stay active and enjoy the world's game. We encourage you to sign your child up for both camps and bring friends, classmates and teammates along. It is a great way to build team chemistry during a week-long training session. We are happy to accommodate full teams and provide a discounted rate for groups more than eight. Please contact us for further information.
