February 24, 2014
Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families,
I hope you all enjoyed the mid-winter break. I had guests from North Carolina this year and the best part of their stay was the time we spent snowshoeing and sledding on the Denny Creek trail with Hobbes and his sister, Shiloh. What a blast! As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I spent a lot of time reading and analyzing the winter Family Input survey that so many of you completed. I've shared a brief summary of results and next steps in the space below. Family Input Survey Summary (highlights -- not all inclusive): Altogether, we had 156 respondents ranging fairly evenly among K-8 participants. The main portion of the survey was divided into 3 sections, each highlighting a different aspect of our *vision statement. We also asked for feedback about the fall conferences. *Vision Statement: Salmon Bay K-8 will provide all students with a physically and emotionally safe space to engage in challenging, integrated and experiential learning, and will prepare them to become resourceful and responsible citizens in an ever-changing, diverse world.

Summary
|
Parent feedback about how SB K-8 has and/or has not engaged their children in challenging, integrated & experiential learning
|
Overall, parents expressed many kudos for our extra-curricular activities such as WEP, field trips, drama, etc.), our emphasis on social-emotional curriculum, and the school's overall emphasis on project-based learning (cornerstone projects such as Making History, Oregon Trail and Rwanda were named specifically).
With regard to areas for improvement, many parents expressed that they would like to see more instructional differentiation, particularly for high achieving students. Other areas that parents recommended for improvement include: increased curriculum continuity from one grade to the next, more of a focus on the mechanics of writing and more specific feedback from teachers about student performance. |
Parent feedback about how SB K-8 has/has not provided their children with a physically & emotionally safe space
|
Overall, parents provided many compliments about our school's emphasis on social-emotional learning. Our staff was repeatedly described as caring and supportive. Our unique K/5 PE program was celebrated. And, finally, middle school fall camp was recognized for providing our students with increased social-emotional support during the transition to the middle school grades.
With regard to areas for improvement, the following topics were mentioned: a need for increased hallway and playground supervision, building safety and security, communication with parents about discipline issues, overcrowding in the cafeteria and increased social-emotional support for "quiet" kids who may not appear in need of additional support. |
Parent feedback about how SB K-8 has/has not prepared their children to become resourceful and responsible citizens in an ever-changing, diverse world
|
Overall, parents provided very positive feedback about activities that promote "autonomy and agile, inquiry based thinking." Examples included field trips, WEP, 8th Grade Project and Biography Night. Parents also commented positively about the middle school teachers' emphasis on study/organizational skills and goal setting.
Areas identified for improvement included academic challenge (rigor), a need for increased teacher guidance regarding accountability, follow through and responsibility. Finally, parents also identified the need for more of a school-wide focus on project-based, hands-on, integrated learning. |
Fall Conference feedback
|
Positive feedback included the following: the teacher remained present; no surprises (re. academics or behavioral issues); specific feedback about child from teacher; teacher actively participated in conference; conference gave student opportunity to develop skills in presentation, leadership, communication, and independence.
Areas for improvement included the following: the time frame felt rushed; teacher took passive role/not present (middle school); lack of specific feedback from the teacher; time not provided for parent to ask questions; lack of parent-teacher private time. |
Some next steps: Your feedback is informing our next steps. Many of the above areas for improvement are now a part of our updated Comprehensive School Improvement Plan. Here are a few things already happening or in progress: As mentioned in last week's newsletter, a number of supervision measures were put in place to increase hallway safety. K/5 and 6/8 staff are also collaborating about transition times to decrease hallway/cafe crowding during our lunch hours. In the upcoming months I will also be following up with staff to determine how to provide continued support to strengthen our new Responsive Classroom and Advisory curriculums. Also, the Building Leadership Team is already working together to brainstorm creative strategies for providing students with more differentiated instruction, to make sure that all students are appropriately challenged. In addition to exploring various curriculum ideas, we will also consider creative staffing options such as an instructional coach who could provide job-embedded professional development opportunities for the teachers. Our continued collaboration with Envisions Learning Partners will include a focus on project-based learning and alternative assessment that align with the grade-level/content area standards. Thanks for taking the time to read this week's newsletter. I hope to see you at the FOSB auction this weekend! -Jen

The Casino Royale Action will happen this Saturday! It is a really fun night! We have a huge potluck dinner, and our Salmon Bay families go all out to showcase their culinary skills. It's a night of music, fun, and good food (and if you can't cook, you can bring a salad!). You can RSVP at this link: https://secure.maestroweb.com/Default.aspx?OrgID=1125 If you have a sudden change of plans, or if you forget to RSVP, you can register at the door! No worries! Consider this your personal invitation from me! I want to see all of your beautiful faces! We still have a few volunteer needs: Live Auction- We really need a couple more people who can help with the different aspects of the live auction. Recorder- We need someone with an eye to detail to sit onstage during the live auction and record all purchases. Breakdown/Cleanup- We still need more people to commit to sticking around at the end of the night until everything is cleaned up and taken away. Check in- We could use 1-2 people who can get there at 4:00 and help with the process of check in. Check out- We could use 1-2 people to help out towards the end of the evening with checkout. Buffet- Our person in charge of the potluck could use a few bodies to help with the buffet. Dessert Dash- We still need 11 desserts to be donated. Appetizers- We need 1-2 people from 4:30 -6:00 to help plate appetizers. Bartenders - We need a few people to serve drinks in the later part in the evening. (8:00 - 9:00 PM will include bar take down) On Thursday, February 27th we are hosting our evening tours for prospective families. We take care of our amazing staff by providing a potluck dinner. If you can provide a dish to help feed the teachers please email me at slmaglianofe@seattleschools.org. The final Auction Decoration Work Party is TONIGHT from 6-8 in the cafeteria. Come be crafty! (You don't actually have to be crafty, we will have instructions and helpers!). Kids are welcome if they can be counted on to help! Thanks and have a great week! Sharon

Or if you're interested in hearing about the SuperFlex social skills curriculum and how it's used in grades 3-5, then this is the meeting for you. If you're not sure (or even knew about) our associated student body (ASB), and are eager to learn from students about their vision and work together, then this is the meeting for you. If you're looking to learn about opportunities to help our auction be successful, then this is the meeting for you. If you're curious about the outcomes from our recent retreat, next steps towards budgeting for next year, board development ideas, results from the BLT'S parent survey, and proposals before FOSB for funding opportunities and requests -- or if you simply enjoy getting to know your community, and like to lend your ear and your voice -- then this is the meeting for you. Camp BioMed
Camp BIOmed Hot this Summer!
Entering Fall, 9th-12th Graders
Kids love test tubes, brain teasers, and things that squish. If this sounds like your child or student, we've got a great
opportunity for your budding science enthusiast this summer at Camp BIOmed. Scientist-students at every level of interest conduct hands-on experiments in real labs and local research facilities, learning scientific methods, protein science and neurobiology.
Does your young adult like gaming? At Camp BIOmed they can create one from scratch. Students will tour local Seattle biomedical facilities and meet PhDs working in the field. Each week of the summer camp will conclude with a culminating expo for students to showcase their projects to supportive adult family members, friends and the community. NWABR encourages students signing up for Camp BIOmed to become members. Students whose parents already work for NWABR membership organizations receive automatic student membership privileges for Camp BIOmed. Alternatively purchasing the benefits of an annual student membership is $25, and reduces the registration rate.
To reserve space today at Camp BIOmed, a minimum $50 deposit per camper per session can be placed here. Financial Assistance is available for student memberships and camp fees, which reduces the cost for students in need. Students may also submit an entry to the Camp BIOmed t-shirt design contest for a chance to win free entry a week of Camp BIOmed. Prizes are also available for 2nd and 3rd place submissions.
Are you a donor interested in sending a student to Camp BIOmed? Let us know!
For more information ask for Mansi, Camp Lead, or Megan. E-mail us at camp@nwabr.org or call 206-957-3337.

Ballard Hugh School K-5 Spring Break Soccer Camps
The Ballard high school girls soccer team and staff will offer two week-long camps this year. The first will occur during spring break and the second will be during summer. Both camps are led by head coach Michelle Beattie and assistant coach Meghan Miller. Small groups will be coached by the girls team, allowing campers to interact with members from the Ballard program.
Our coaches have attended many camps and know the value it brings to each camper. All coaches and player-coaches are dedicated to creating a safe, fun and engaging camp. Camp curriculum is comprised of knowledge the coaches have acquired from their camp and coaching experiences, as well as actual training drills from Ballard practices and fun games.
Youth camps are offered to K-5th graders. Please note this camp is focused on soccer, where we will challenge campers to work hard, try new things and the importance of perseverance. We also talk about sportsmanship, respect for all campers, playing as a team and playing fair.
Both camps are a wonderful way for your son or daughter to tune up their soccer skills, make new friends, stay active and enjoy the world's game. We encourage you to sign your child up for both camps and bring friends, classmates and teammates along. It is a great way to build team chemistry during a week-long training session. We are happy to accommodate full teams and provide a discounted rate for groups more than eight. Please contact us for further information.
