Principal's Note

February 11, 2014

Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families,

It's been a busy couple of weeks at Salmon Bay K-8, and this week is no different. We hosted our second set of tours for prospective families earlier today and had another great turnout. Tours are one of my favorite school events because I really enjoy having the opportunity to tell people all of the wonderful things that Salmon Bay K-8 has to offer children and their families. Much of what was share can be found in our updated school brochure. Of course, what really sells our school is the classroom visits during which prospective families have the opportunity to see joyful teaching and learning in action.

I want to take a moment to  update you on what's happening here at the school. I have organized my thoughts into separate sections to make things a bit easier for you to read.

School Safety:

Upon visiting the school, you may notice that K/5 teachers are now escorting groups of students to and from specials (PE, sing, art, etc.), lunch and recess. This new policy is in place to ensure increased student safety throughout the school day as students travel from one place to another.

Professional Development:

During our most recent professional development session with Envisions Learning Partners, we worked together to finish drafting our Salmon Bay K-8 "Graduate Profile." I can't wait to collaborate with the staff to finalize this document so that we can begin using it to guide K-8 discussions about how we individually and collectively support the intellectual, social-emotional and physical development of our students as they move from one grade to the next. Look out for this document in the upcoming weeks!

Staff news:

As you know, Danielle Jackson joined our front office staff in August. What you may not know, however, is that Danielle's commute was presenting a real challenge for her and her family.  So, the bad news for us is that Danielle recently made the difficult decision to resign from her position here at SB. The good news, however, is that she was offered an incredible  job opportunity working with at-risk youth and families in her community, shortening her commute and giving her the opportunity to do something she has dreamed about for years. While we certainly already miss Danielle's cheerful presence in the front office, we have been fortunate to have Caitlin Racey fill in as a long term sub and greatly appreciate everything she has done to go out of her way to make this a seamless transition for staff, students and families.

Thanks for taking the time to read my blurb this week. In the near future I will be sharing a summary of results from the recent Family Input Survey and will let you know how we are using your input to guide many important decisions here at school.

Thanks,

Jen
Assistant Principal's Note

Last Thursday the Seattle Fire Department responded to a medical emergency at Salmon Bay.  One of our middle school student's grandfather was experiencing acute chest pain and shortness of breath as he was dropping his granddaughter off at school. The student recognized these heart attack symptoms and raced into the office to activate the Emergency Response System.  Two building staff members and a Salmon Bay parent provided direct care at the scene while the EMTs where in transit to the scene.  The Fire Department's response time was exceptionally quick!  Several members of the school safety committee sprang into action to help establish a safety zone for the first responders by cordoning off traffic flow on 18th Avenue.

The grandfather was transferred to the hospital for treatment with a stent.  The quick detection and response helped limit his complication!  We greatly appreciate everyone stepping up and helping with this medical emergency.

Finally, the American Heart Association has a great webpage that highlights warning signs of heart attack, stroke and cardiac arrest.  I encourage everyone to take a few moments to review the warning signs associated with heart emergencies!

Have a great week,
Brett

The Casino Royale Action will happen on Saturday March 1st and it is a really fun night!  We have a huge potluck dinner, and our Salmon Bay families go all out to showcase their culinary skills.  It's a night of music, fun, and good food (and if you can't cook, you can bring a salad!).  You can RSVP at this link: https://secure.maestroweb.com/Default.aspx?OrgID=1125

I hope to see you all there!

Our monthly FOSB meeting is on Thursday at 7 PM in the library.  We have a full agenda (which is attached to this email) and it should be a night of lively discussion.  Please come!  We love new voices.  If you have a child at Salmon Bay, you are already a member!

Reminder:  Next week is Presidents Day/Mid-Winter Break.  There is no school from Feb 17- Feb 21st.  Enjoy your week off and we will see you back on the 24th.

Many thanks to the parents who helped with our day time tours.  It's so nice to hear different perspectives on our school and to share them with prospective families.  A special thank you to the 4th and 5th Grade Student Ambassadors.  They were a fantastic addition to our tours and they did a great job of greeting, guiding and answering questions!

On Thursday, February 27th we are hosting our evening tours for prospective families.  We take care of our amazing staff by providing a potluck dinner.  If you can provide a dish to help feed the teachers please email me at slmaglianofe@seattleschools.org.

There is an Auction Decoration Work Party TONIGHT from 6-8 in the cafeteria.  Come be crafty! (You don't actually have to be crafty, we will have instructions and helpers!).

Thanks and have a great week!

Sharon

Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note
Hello middle school families,

We have finished up our daytime tours and I want to send out a thank you to all the parents who helped guide and answer questions.  It is always great to see our school through a newcomer's eyes.  A big shout out to our amazing 8th grade tour guides who ran the show for me.

We have our last tour on Thursday 2/27th at 7:00pm and could use some volunteer help.  It is an evening tour and we try to provide a potluck dinner for the staff that are staying afterschool for the tour.  If you would be willing to bring a dish to feed our amazing teachers, please email me at caracey@seattleschools.org

Next week (2/17-2/21) is mid-winter break and there is no school.  I hope you have time to relax and enjoy yourselves.

Our monthly FOSB meeting is this Thursday 2/13  at 7:00PM in the library.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The auction is fast approaching and we are still in need of many volunteers and donations!  Look for a separate email tomorrow asking for specific volunteers and ways you can get involved.  This fundraiser needs many hands to make it a success.

If you are interested in applying for the middle school volunteer coordinator position and haven't applied yet, please submit your letter of interest and resume by this Friday 2/14.

Have a great week!

Caitlin

After-school drama opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students -- Improv

The Salmon Bay Drama Committee, in partnership with Jet City Improv, is organizing a six-week Improv Class for 7th and 8th grade students of Salmon Bay. Classes are two-hours long and will be held for six weeks on Wednesday afternoons after school beginning February 26 and ending April 2. There will also be a final evening showcase, date TBD.

Students discover the basic vocabulary and technique of improv through scenes and games in a fun, welcoming environment. When students learn to improvise, they learn valuable skills such as public speaking, confidence in front of an audience, teamwork, communication, and creative problem solving.

*Note - Improv requires spontaneous responses and a comfort with unpredictability.

Notes from the Chairs

We have a great agenda this month! If you've been wondering what standards-based grading means, and how it helps our staff make authentic assessments of student learning, then this is the meeting for you. Or if you're interested in hearing about the SuperFlex social skills curriculum and how it's used in grades 3-5, then this is the meeting for you. If you're not sure (or even knew about) our associated student body (ASB), and are eager to learn from students about their vision and work together, then this is the meeting for you. If you've ever wondered about how we raise money, make time, and build community, and want to join a facilitated discussion about that (see attached handout), this is the meeting for you. If you're looking to learn about opportunities to help our auction be successful, then this is the meeting for you. If you're curious about the outcomes from our recent retreat, next steps towards budgeting for next year, board development ideas, results from the BLT'S parent survey, and proposals before FOSB for funding opportunities and requests -- or if you simply enjoy getting to know your community, and like to lend your ear and your voice -- then this is the meeting for you. Join us at 7:00 pm this Thursday in the library!

Dads needed for Salmon Bay Brewing Crew

Hey Salmon Bay Dads!   Interested in helping out the school auction?  Our very own Joel Maier leads a fearless group of brewers as they brew the malty beverages that we sell at the auction to raise funds for our fine school.  This cost of the brewing is shared out amongst the brew crew so that everything brought in is pure profit for the school.  Would you like to be a member of this elite crew?  They are going to be meeting Thursday at 6pm at Gallaghers in Edmonds

Email Joel at jamaier@seattleschools.org if you are interested.

Camp BioMed

Camp BIOmed Hot this Summer!

Entering Fall, 9th-12th Graders

Kids love test tubes, brain teasers, and things that squish. If this sounds like your child or student, we've got a great

opportunity for your budding science enthusiast this summer at Camp BIOmed. Scientist-students at every level of interest conduct hands-on experiments in real labs and local research facilities, learning scientific methods, protein science
and neurobiology.

Does your young adult like gaming?
At Camp BIOmed they can create one from scratch. Students will tour local Seattle biomedical facilities and meet PhDs working
in the field. Each week of the summer camp will conclude with a culminating expo for students to showcase their projects to supportive adult family members, friends and the community. NWABR encourages students signing up for Camp BIOmed to become members. Students whose parents already work for NWABR membership organizations receive automatic student membership privileges for Camp BIOmed. Alternatively purchasing the benefits of an annual student
membership is $25, and reduces the registration rate.

To reserve space today at Camp BIOmed, a minimum $50 deposit per camper per session can be placed here. Financial Assistance is available for student memberships and camp fees, which reduces the cost for students in need. Students may also submit an entry to the Camp BIOmed t-shirt design contest for a chance to win free entry a week of Camp BIOmed. Prizes are also available for 2nd and 3rd place submissions.

Are you a donor interested in sending a student to Camp BIOmed? Let us know!

For more information ask for Mansi, Camp Lead, or Megan. E-mail us at camp@nwabr.org
or call 206-957-3337.
