Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay K-8 Families,

After being out sick almost the entire past week, it feels great to be at school this morning. I had a great meeting with our Building Leadership Team this morning. After sharing a number of team and classroom celebrations with one another, we made time to also share some challenges and to brainstorm solutions together. I am so proud of the teamwork and collaborative spirit of our staff. Toward the end of today's BLT meeting, I also had the opportunity to share results from the recent Family Input Survey that so many of you completed. We had a total of 156 respondents with nice representation across each of the grades! I can't wait to share these results with families at this weekend's FOSB retreat, and really hope you are planning to attend. Also on this weekend's FOSB agenda is an update from Envisions Learning Partners about our current professional development and our next steps with standards-based planning, project-based learning and alternative assessment. There is much more exciting information on the retreat agenda, and I am looking forward to an enjoyable experience with staff and families as we continue to work together to achieve our vision.

Assistant Principal's Note

At Salmon Bay we strive to enhance our learning community by coordinating field trips, after school programs and special events that include parents and community members.  It is our goal to develop a cohesive learning community that shares the vision of building relationships and preparing our students to become resourceful and responsible citizens.

This school year, I have had the opportunity to help coordinate three family events: November's Sounders Soccer Game, February's Family Ski Day at Stevens Pass, and a May's Seattle Mariners Game.

The Salmon Bay Family Ski Day at Stevens Pass is just around the corner on February 1st. Currently we have 67 individuals signed up for day passes and 40 individuals signed up for the ski bus.   There is still time to sign up!

Details

We are headed to Stevens Pass for a day of skiing and snowboarding fun on Saturday, February 1st.  We have obtained a group discount on lift tickets and have hired a charter bus for only $15 per person.  The lift ticket prices are as follows:

·      Ages 6 and under-  free

·      Ages 7-15- $29.00

·      Ages 16 and over-  $49.00

There are also lesson and rental packages available at a discounted rate if you are interested.

Please fill out the interest form at:   https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ddiUjju1C_fJR6fMJfu8D5I97gMgSOiFy1A8nId6tZU

Elementary Volunteer Coordinator's Note
Hi Parents!

This Saturday, January 25, is our annual FOSB retreat from 8:30 - 2:30 at Caitlin Racey's house. Everyone who has a student a Salmon Bay is already a member, and we encourage you to join us, even if you don't typically come to FOSB meetings. It's a potluck lunch, so bring something to share .

Our School Auction is happening on March 1st at North Seattle Community College. This is a very fun event and is our biggest fundraiser of the year!  See the exciting new "Auction Updates" section below for info on some of the many ways you can help!

Every year at the auction we put projects made by the classrooms up for bid. These are some of the most popular items and some of the biggest money makers, and we rely on class parents to lead the kids in these projects. About half of our elementary classrooms already have a parent leading up a project, but those parents can use some extra help. Sally, Kim, Marilyn, Cassie and Marian still need parents to take the lead. If you need ideas or help organizing please email Sandy Nelson, Auction Project Coordinator at san-nel@earthlink.net.

On Thursday our Hospitality Committee is hosting a social coffee hour, please come by and say hello!

Just a reminder that all visitors need to sign in. If you are in the building after 8:30 (the end of "drop off") or before 2:30 (the beginning of "pick up") you need to sign in at the front office and wear a pink visitor's badge. Everyone who signs in will also need to sign out. In case of a building emergency, we need an accurate list of who is in the building. Thanks for your continued cooperation with this policy.

Have a great week!

Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Hello middle school parents,

Well,  we got through the first week of WEP and from all reports it was a huge success!   People were off touring at the fortune cookie factory, doing tricks at the circus arts gym, ice skating, making jewelry,  learning about the theater,  and skiing/snowboarding!  Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help out here and on the mountain, got their student to school on time even with the traffic jam, sent their child well prepared for the day's activities and in general made the first day a great success. We will send more information about the 2nd week of WEP later in the week.

It is now all auction all the time!   Before we know it March 1st will be here and we will be hanging at North Seattle Community College  in our best Casino Royale outfits ready to raise lots of money for Salmon Bay!  Our theme is Casino Royale so come as a James Bond character, a slot machine or just your put on your favorite finery.  Get your donations in and look to sign up and be involved in our largest fundraiser.  There is a signup sheet outside the volunteer coordinators offices and we can answer any questions you might have.

Wednesday 1/22-  Middle school band concert.  Come and hear our accomplished middle school musicians.

Wednesday 1/22- 7-9PM Ballard High School Library-  Behind the Smoke-  A presentation at Ballard High School with up to date information about marijuana use and your teenager.  This is a great night for you and your teen to get some valuable information about a subject that they will come up against at some point in their school career.

Ski Day at Stevens Pass

Salmon Bay Family Ski Day at Stevens Pass!   After the resounding success of our family day at the Sounders we wanted to organize another fun event for Salmon Bay K-8.  This is an all school family event so students must be accompanied and chaperoned by an adult.

We are headed to Stevens Pass for a day of skiing and snowboarding fun on Saturday, February 1st.  We have obtained a group discount on lift tickets and if we get 50 people who are interested we can hire a charter bus for only $15 per person.  If we don't have enough people for the bus people will need to provide their own transportation.  The lift ticket prices are as follows:

Ages 6 and under-  free

Ages 7-15- $29.00

Ages 16 and over-  $49.00

There are also lesson and rental packages available at a discounted rate if you are interested.

Please fill out the interest form at

so we can see if we have enough people to make this happen.

District Kindergarten Enrollment Nights

December 2013SPS School Choice + Enrollment Information
At Seattle Public Schools., each elementary or K-8 school operates fairly independently in deciding when to hold open houses. If you're interested in exploring "choice" schools in your attendance area, it is helpful to contact the office of each school to find out when you can visit. Click here for school contact listing.
Early registration for 2014-15 School year began Oct. 1, 2013. Several district-wide Kindergarten Enrollment events will be held in different parts of the city in December and January. Click Here for Enrollment Info.

When you register your child, you'll need to provide the following:
*Student's Proof of Birth
*Student's CIS (Immunizations) Click here.
* Two documents verifying parent name and proof of Seattle residence
* Student's Admission Form. Click here.
* Photo ID of Parent/Guardian
You may already know your attendance area school, but in case you need to figure that out, Click here.
After you register, you will receive an assignment ticket in the mail listing your student's 2014-2015 school and/or program assignment. You don't need to do anything else. Your student will attend the school indicated on the assignment ticket for the upcoming year.
If you wish to change your student's 2014-2015 school or program assignment, you will need to submit a "choice application" during Open Enrollment. See below for more information about Open Enrollment.
SCHOOL/PROGRAM CHOICE ENROLLMENT FOR 2014-2015: February 24 through March 7, 2014
Our Student Assignment Plan provides opportunities for families to request which school and/or program (such as Montessori, Spectrum, APP, etc.) they would like their student to attend. An Open Enrollment period occurs each spring for students to submit choice applications for the following school year. Choice application forms will be available from February 24 through March 7, 2014 and must be returned (either in person or online) to Seattle Public Schools by Fri., March 7, 2014.
If there are more applicants than seats available for a particular school, program, and/or grade, then certain tiebreakers are used to determine which students are selected. If there is not a seat available for an applicant, then that student is placed on a waitlist and contacted if space becomes available.
When in doubt, please know that you can call (252-0760) or email Enrollment Services EnrollServices@seattleschools.org if you have further questions.

Great Time to Join Pacifica Choir

Dear Parents,

If your child loves to sing this is a good time to join Pacifica Choir.  I direct the K-2 choir which requires no audition.  We meet on Wed. from 5-5:50 at the Maple Leaf Lutheran Church which is on 100th St. between 35th Ave. NE and Lake City Way.  Other aged choirs meet that same evening.  In choir your child will learn to read music, the fundamentals of music theory, sing in harmony - and have a lot of fun doing so!  If you want me to listen to your child's voice I am able to audition children for the appropriate choir for their age.  (I can also do a kind of "non-audition audition" where I check out their voice without them knowing they are being auditioned.)  Having said that, some children really like the experience of an audition.

Please contact me if you are interested.

Event focusing on Dyslexia on Jan. 28th

As the mom of a dyslexic child I wanted to spread the word about an exciting event being held at Hamlin Robinson School (HRS) on Tuesday, January 28th. HRS will be screening Dislecksia: The Movie, and hosting a discussion with the director of the movie, Harvey Hubbell, and authors of the book The Dyslexia Advantage, Fernette and Brock Eide.

Dyslexia: The Movie is a powerfully touching and entertaining documentary that mixes humor and perspective with  insight and analysis. The film features Billy Bob Thornton and other famous dyslexics. The film educates and illuminates many misconceptions about dyslexia, while underlining the need for raised awareness, early identification and social change.

Parents, teachers, friends, students - everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. I'd appreciate it if you could pass along the attached information to the parent community. Please see Hamlin Robinson's website for more details:  http://hamlinrobinson.org/dislecksia

Thank you!
