Assistant Principal's Note

One of the special characteristics of the Salmon Bay K-8 School learning community is the exceptionally supportive parent community.  Each week we have dozens of parents volunteering and helping in the school. Additionally, we have many parent visitors in the cafeteria and playground and who gather in the hallways before the school releases for the day.  It is great to have so much support. We encourage your continued support of Salmon Bay K-8 and request that you follow the school policies listed below.

Visitors and Volunteers:All visitors should sign in with date/time/signature at the front desk and obtain a visitor's badge/sticker before reporting to the classroom. Visitors/volunteers who are expected may be sent to the classroom, whereas office staff will check with the teacher and/or principal/principal's designee before sending unannounced visitors/volunteers to the classroom. The school staff has been asked to redirect all visitors/volunteers without proper badges/stickers back to the office to follow this procedure.  Anyone in the building between 8:35 am (the end of "drop off") and 2:30 pm (the beginning of "pick up") needs to sign in and wear a visitor sticker. Visitors must sign out before exiting the building. It is important for us to know who is no longer in the building in case of emergency.

Doors:  Soon after drop-off all doors are locked except the main doors on 65th street. If entering the building at any time after drop off (including for pick up) you must use the doors on NW 65th St. Our ADA accessible entrance is the NE door on 18th Ave. NW.  Instructions for ADA access are posted on the door.

As we work to improve the security and access to the school we would like to thank everyone for your patience and respect of our policies regarding student and staff safety.

Thanks,

Brett

Elementary Volunteer Coordinator's Note
Hi Parents!

Thanks to those of you who have turned in your enrichment fees already! If you have not yet made a payment or set up your payment arrangements you can do so by clicking these links:

One-Time Payment in Full

Monthly Payments

This Friday our Middle Schoolers will be headed out for Winter Enrichment.  This is a quick reminder to be extra careful on Friday morning as kids will be outside loading up.  The playground will be closed to students (students can use the auditorium after 8 am).  Expect traffic delays at drop off. I will send detailed information about parking/traffic later this week

Our Annual Auction is fast approaching.  This is our biggest fundraiser and we cannot make the event a success without help from you. Don't know where to start?  Join us this Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Caitlin Racey's house (3218 NW 59th St) for an Auction Planning Party.  We have jobs of all sizes and for all commitment levels, we will find one that works for you! Please join us, we need all hands on deck at this point in the planning!

Our Hospitality Committee is hosting a coffee social this Wednesday at 8:30 in the front lobby.  Please come by and say hello!

The School Board is voting to adopt a new transportation schedule next year that will save money, but have Salmon Bay starting classes 30 minutes earlier.  Please read the attached note and make your voice heard.

Wednesday is a 2 hour early dismissal for Professional Development.

Thanks,

Sharon

Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Hello middle school families,

We have gotten snow in the mountains so at this point it looks like all of our WEP programs should be a go for this Friday.  We will be sending out an informational email later today so look for that.  If we do need to cancel/postpone WEP again,  you will get an email and a robocall from us.

Auction volunteer rallying party!   Wednesday January 15th at 7PM  at 3218 NW 59th ST.  The auction will be here before you know it (March 1st)  and our biggest fundraiser will not happen without many hands helping to get all of the work done.  There are jobs big and small and we need a show of support.  It is time to come forward and show our fearless auction chair we are with her and ready to make it a success!

2 hour early release Wednesday, January 15th.  Staff will be doing professional development so students will be released 2 hours early.

The school district is proposing changes to our start time in order to save money on transportation.  They are proposing a 30 minute earlier start time for Salmon Bay.  See the information below and the attached letter so you can have your voice heard on this important issue.

The NW Coalition for a Drug Free Community is hosting an evening to provide up to date information for parents and teens about marijuana.  See below in the middle school section for more information.  This will be a very informative evening with excellent speakers sharing important information.

Have a great week!

Ski Day at Stevens Pass

Salmon Bay Family Ski Day at Stevens Pass!   After the resounding success of our family day at the Sounders we wanted to organize another fun event for Salmon Bay K-8.  This is an all school family event so students must be accompanied and chaperoned by an adult.

We are headed to Stevens Pass for a day of skiing and snowboarding fun on Saturday, February 1st.  We have obtained a group discount on lift tickets and if we get 50 people who are interested we can hire a charter bus for only $15 per person.  If we don't have enough people for the bus people will need to provide their own transportation.  The lift ticket prices are as follows:

Ages 6 and under-  free

Ages 7-15- $29.00

Ages 16 and over-  $49.00

There are also lesson and rental packages available at a discounted rate if you are interested.

Please fill out the interest form at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ddiUjju1C_fJR6fMJfu8D5I97gMgSOiFy1A8nId6tZU/viewform so we can see if we have enough people to make this happen.

8th Grade Yearbook Photos
Dear 8th graders - now is the time to start thinking about the photo that you want in this year's yearbook and the quote, if any, you want to include. The students of the media arts classes are now accepting photos/portraits and quotes. Photos must be in .jpg format, and sent as an email attachment to Glyde ([email protected]) or brought to her on a flash drive in room 306. (Remember, most photos taken by phones are NOT in .jpg format and need to be converted before they are sent...)
Deadline = Monday Jan 20.
8th grade quote - school appropriate, with proper credit and no longer than 20 words.
If you do not send in a photo, then we will include your school photo instead.
Thanks!

School District Information
District Kindergarten Enrollment Nights

December 2013SPS School Choice + Enrollment Information
At Seattle Public Schools., each elementary or K-8 school operates fairly independently in deciding when to hold open houses. If you're interested in exploring "choice" schools in your attendance area, it is helpful to contact the office of each school to find out when you can visit. Click here for school contact listing.
Early registration for 2014-15 School year began Oct. 1, 2013. Several district-wide Kindergarten Enrollment events will be held in different parts of the city in December and January. Click Here for Enrollment Info.

When you register your child, you'll need to provide the following:
*Student's Proof of Birth
*Student's CIS (Immunizations) Click here.
* Two documents verifying parent name and proof of Seattle residence
* Student's Admission Form. Click here.
* Photo ID of Parent/Guardian
You may already know your attendance area school, but in case you need to figure that out, Click here.
After you register, you will receive an assignment ticket in the mail listing your student's 2014-2015 school and/or program assignment. You don't need to do anything else. Your student will attend the school indicated on the assignment ticket for the upcoming year.
If you wish to change your student's 2014-2015 school or program assignment, you will need to submit a "choice application" during Open Enrollment. See below for more information about Open Enrollment.
SCHOOL/PROGRAM CHOICE ENROLLMENT FOR 2014-2015: February 24 through March 7, 2014
Our Student Assignment Plan provides opportunities for families to request which school and/or program (such as Montessori, Spectrum, APP, etc.) they would like their student to attend. An Open Enrollment period occurs each spring for students to submit choice applications for the following school year. Choice application forms will be available from February 24 through March 7, 2014 and must be returned (either in person or online) to Seattle Public Schools by Fri., March 7, 2014.
If there are more applicants than seats available for a particular school, program, and/or grade, then certain tiebreakers are used to determine which students are selected. If there is not a seat available for an applicant, then that student is placed on a waitlist and contacted if space becomes available.
When in doubt, please know that you can call (252-0760) or email Enrollment Services [email protected] if you have further questions.

Librarian's Note

Happy 2014! January is always an exciting time in the library world, as it's the month when the major Children's and Young Adult book awards are announced. (And you thought that the Golden Globes were big!) If you would like to follow the ever-growing excitement, this blog has a great conversation going about the favorites. As always, the best conversations happen in the "Comments" section! (Yes, I have a couple of favorites for the two big awards, but I'm not going to reveal them until after the announcements have been made).

And speaking of books, thanks to everyone who scoured houses, lockers, cars, backpack, etc. to locate missing overdue books. In the last week before break, we were able to reduce our backlog of overdue books by about 40%. Keep up the good work!

For those of you who like data, our total number of books circulated (up until the last day before break) was slightly over 7,600. Most importantly, that's an increase of about 20% over last year. Thanks to my 4th and 5th grade library helpers; TAs Sophie Adams and Ella Jones; and parent-helper extraordinaire Kelly Speight for all of their hard work in getting those books checked in and put back out on the shelves!

We're still waiting for our big U Book Store order to come in. Once it does, we have a lot of volunteers standing by; ready to help with the necessary processing. Look for new books heading home soon!

Happy Reading!

Linda

January Meeting Minutes

Notes from the Co-chairs

Seattle Public Schools has proposed a 3-tier transportation plan that would impact school start and end times next year, resulting in our buses arriving by 7:35 am and departing at 2:30 pm. The proposed start time for Salmon Bay would be approximately a half hour earlier next year. We are not the only school affected by this proposal; the site council for TOPS K-8 Alternative School has shared with us a memo to their families (attached), which outlines how they hope to address this issue with the board. Like their site council, FOSB encourages parents to be mindful that any concerns expressed to the school board will have a greater impact if we remember how the proposal impacts all the students in the district, not just our own. The school board meeting at which this is scheduled to be voted upon is January 22.

The FOSB Hospitality Committee is hosting a morning coffee hour this Wednesday, so please join us! We hope to address your concerns, as well as share our own.

The board is beginning recruitment for next year; if you're interested in the following leadership positions, please contact one of your chairs:

  • Elementary co-chair
  • Middle School BLT representative
  • Elementary and middle school treasurers
  • Gardening committee chair

The board discussed a motion to begin accepting donations through a new program offered by Amazon, but did not reach consensus. Your voice and vote is important, so please join us at our February board meeting, and look for further details very soon.

Stepping into our "educator spotlight" this month were Linda Illman and Barbara Leuty, who shared with us how the art program within the middle school has grown and blossomed, including the recent project with local artist Marita Dingus. We also welcomed Jaxie Binder and Greg Meredith from Seattle Guitar Circle, who are looking for support to expand guitar circle for students in grades 3 through 8. If you have ideas, suggestions or concerns, please let us know. We invite you to visit guitar circle's website, and talk with your students to learn even more.

Retreat planning is underway, and we will soon provide our agenda, so stay tuned. Mark your calendars for January 25th!

Minutes from FOSB's recent board meeting can be found online; as always, we encourage you to take a moment and stay informed about what's happening around the board table. Please feel free to contact us at any time. Thank you! Jodi Russell ([email protected]) and Robin Lofstrom ([email protected]).

Great Time to Join Pacifica Choir

Dear Parents,

If your child loves to sing this is a good time to join Pacifica Choir.  I direct the K-2 choir which requires no audition.  We meet on Wed. from 5-5:50 at the Maple Leaf Lutheran Church which is on 100th St. between 35th Ave. NE and Lake City Way.  Other aged choirs meet that same evening.  In choir your child will learn to read music, the fundamentals of music theory, sing in harmony - and have a lot of fun doing so!  If you want me to listen to your child's voice I am able to audition children for the appropriate choir for their age.  (I can also do a kind of "non-audition audition" where I check out their voice without them knowing they are being auditioned.)  Having said that, some children really like the experience of an audition.

Please contact me if you are interested.

Thanks,

Mary K.

Event focusing on Dyslexia on Jan. 28th

As the mom of a dyslexic child I wanted to spread the word about an exciting event being held at Hamlin Robinson School (HRS) on Tuesday, January 28th. HRS will be screening Dislecksia: The Movie, and hosting a discussion with the director of the movie, Harvey Hubbell, and authors of the book The Dyslexia Advantage, Fernette and Brock Eide.

Dyslexia: The Movie is a powerfully touching and entertaining documentary that mixes humor and perspective with  insight and analysis. The film features Billy Bob Thornton and other famous dyslexics. The film educates and illuminates many misconceptions about dyslexia, while underlining the need for raised awareness, early identification and social change.

Parents, teachers, friends, students - everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. I'd appreciate it if you could pass along the attached information to the parent community. Please see Hamlin Robinson's website for more details:  http://hamlinrobinson.org/dislecksia

Thank you!
