Principal's Note

January 6, 2014

Dear SB K-8 Families,

I hope that everyone enjoyed a relaxing winter break with family and friends. I am excited to be back in the company of our kids, teachers and families and am looking forward to the rest of our school year.

Prior to our break, I shared a family input survey, asking each of you for feedback regarding our progress toward achieving our shared vision. Knowing that the week before break was a very busy time of year, I have extended the time frame to increase your opportunity for providing input. The survey (above link) will remain active until midnight on Sunday, January 12th.

Since collaborating last fall to review and revise our vision, we have been using that valuable information to guide us in naming the K-8 practices that provide our school community with a unique, alternative approach to education. We have consistently utilized a balanced, whole-child framework to analyze our current practices and to determine our goals and strategies for the future. As I continue to reflect upon the past year and a half, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to consider your experiences, thoughts and perspectives in addition to my own.

Thank you so much for your time as you respond to the survey questions. I look forward to reading your feedback and to continuing our journey together.

Sincerely,

Jen

Assistant Principal's Note

Often a new year brings reflection and dreams.  We reflect on the accomplishments and journeys from the previous year and then dream of new goals and desires for the months to come.  On the New Year, I found myself sitting at the fireplace reflecting on Salmon Bay.  I thought about the wonderful activities, projects and field trips that our students have engaged in to extend their learning. Then I thought about the many conversations, emails and meetings that I have participated in that highlight broad hopes and dreams.

In recent years the use of the term 'culture of one' has been used to describe the notion that each and every one of us have unique backgrounds and experiences and that through the appreciation of individuals we gain a better understanding of our culture. I value that idea, but I also value the concept of a 'culture of we.'  We all have different wants and desires.  It is my hope that through the embracement of a 'culture of we' that we can acknowledge that we must give and take  to find balance.

As a public school we have many influences: students, parents, teachers, administration, local community, school district and state and federal government are just a few of the stakeholders.  Each has their own wants and desires.  It is my hope and dream to see Salmon Bay continue to build a learning community that has a deep foundation based on relationships.

Please continue to share your ideas and concerns with Jen and myself. Through your honest feedback, we can continue to make Salmon Bay the best possible school for all kids.

-Brett

Our Lantern Festival was a beautiful success once again.  Many, many thanks to the parents who helped with set up and who provided a fast and complete take-down.  Special thanks to Julia Kuskin who saved the day when I forgot the matches!   More special thanks to sixth graders Owen, Lucas, Milo and Ian for all of their help with transporting the lanterns from the Art Room on Thursday afternoon.  On Friday evening we lit up Salmon Bay Park with our lanterns and our voices under the guidance of the great Mary K.  It was great to see so many Salmon Bay Families there!

Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Welcome back!  I hope you had a wonderful break and you got a chance time to do something you really enjoy.  We are scheduled to start WEP this Friday and as you may know Mother Nature hasn't been cooperating with us up to this point.  There is snow in the forecast for this week so we are hoping to postpone making a decision until the last minute regarding whether we will have WEP on Friday or postpone for a week.  Look for an email tomorrow from me that will fill you in on all the details and let you know when to expect the final decision.  If we do cancel WEP, all middle school students will have a regular class day on Friday and we will use one of our make-up WEP dates.

Our monthly FOSB meeting is this Thursday 1/9 at 7PM in the library.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Have a great week!

Ski Day at Stevens Pass

Salmon Bay Family Ski Day at Stevens Pass!   After the resounding success of our family day at the Sounders we wanted to organize another fun event for Salmon Bay K-8.  This is an all school family event so students must be accompanied and chaperoned by an adult.

We are headed to Stevens Pass for a day of skiing and snowboarding fun on Saturday, February 1st.  We have obtained a group discount on lift tickets and if we get 50 people who are interested we can hire a charter bus for only $15 per person.  If we don't have enough people for the bus people will need to provide their own transportation.  The lift ticket prices are as follows:

Ages 6 and under-  free

Ages 7-15- $29.00

Ages 16 and over-  $49.00

There are also lesson and rental packages available at a discounted rate if you are interested.

Please fill out the interest form at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1ddiUjju1C_fJR6fMJfu8D5I97gMgSOiFy1A8nId6tZU/viewform so we can see if we have enough people to make this happen.

Guitar Circles at Salmon Bay Update

The Seattle Circle Guitar School's expanded Guitar Circle program at Salmon Bay has just wrapped up its first semester.

We have been working with Kim's 3rd graders on the fundamentals of the guitar, and how to work together creatively and have some fun in the process. The young guitarists serenaded the office staff and the rest of their classmates with a rousing rendition of "Yellow Submarine". Beginning in February it will be Marilyn's class in the Guitar Circle.

We have 17 4th and 5th graders participating in the Guitar Instrumental Music program. Kids ranging from complete beginners to old hands at the guitar, focusing on musical collaboration, honing technique, learning the basics of musical organization, and developing listening skills.

And finally, we also just wrapped up the first session of the Middle School friday afternoon club program. Great kids, and a whole lot of fun ranging from help with basics to song writing and performing to a rock and roll version of musical chairs. The new session of clubs will begin in late February, and we very much look forward to seeing some new faces as well.

School District Information
District Kindergarten Enrollment Nights

December 2013

Dear Families and Early Learning Providers:

We want to invite you and others with children who will be starting Kindergarten next fall to come to one of the upcoming "Kindergarten Enrollment" nights listed on the attached flyer. Seattle Public Schools and the City of Seattle Early Education Collaborative are co-hosting these events at 4 elementary schools around the city. No matter where your child will go to Kindergarten next fall, we welcome parents/guardians as well as providers to attend one of these events and:

  • Learn about the Student Assignment Plan and option schools in your region of the city. Please note: families who want to choose a different school than their attendance area (neighborhood) school must complete a "Choice Form" during Open Enrollment (2/24-3/7/14). For more information, visit the SPS                          website at www.seattleschools.org/enrollment
  • Get help understanding the enrollment process and what needs to happen to get children enrolled early. You can get enrollment forms at the event, complete them and turn them in to a representative from the SPS enrollment office at the event.
  • Learn from a kindergarten teacher what will help children to be ready for school.
  • Find out about before and after school care from Child Care Resources as well as preschool and child care options for children birth to age five.
  • Know what immunizations and medical/dental exams are needed before the first day of school.
  • Hear about family engagement opportunities you can be part of in the future.

Interpreters will be available if requested in advance, and we will offer supervised children's activities along with helpful school-readiness resources from Seattle Public Library and others.

We look forward to seeing you!

Notes from the Garden Committee

Hello fellow Gardeners!,

I am hoping everyone enjoyed their Winter Break and all the festivities that

consume us all with happiness and laughter, stress and maybe some good old fashioned

relaxing!

We are hibernating at this time, as it is Winter, but mark your calendars down for

MARCH 22nd, Sat. from 10-1!  It will be Spring and I'm hoping it will be beautiful

out so we can clean up our Gardens and get those wood chips off the lawn and

in our beds!!!

If we are lucky, there may be a Girl Scout group of 3rd graders? joining us that

day!  Such a great idea brought to me by Jodi Russell and her troop!  They are looking

to fulfill  some community service and chose their school garden to volunteer in!  I hope this is not

too soon to mention, I am really excited to see and hear that a group such as this one

thought of us and what a gift!  I will keep you posted of further activities for March

but wanted to get that seed started that the committee is still in action!

I am still hoping a lovely new parent from the Elementary will step up SOON to

take over as GARDENING CHAIR for our committee.  It really isn't a huge job, but as

a parent of a middle school child and being the lead of this committee for 5 years, I

am looking to step down.  I will be reminding you all of this fact every letter until I can

get a replacement. Next year is my daughter Madeline's last year, eeeekkk, makes my

stomach turn saying it, but it is true!  Time has flown by so fast.  So, please!!!  Spread the

word, there is room for a chair and co-chair so look around, talk and get back to me,

Jen Millen,by email.

Stay warm and don't forget to feed your birds and hummingbirds!!  Cover your faucets, add

mulch to those Dahlias and everything else!  :)

I also work for families at our school, so members, you are always welcome to call or email me

if you need assistance with your yards!  My business is Busy Bee Gardening, I work all over in

Ballard and most of the city!  :)

Cheers,

Jen Millen

Garden Comm. Chair

Budget Committee Meeting

The FOSB Budget Committee Meeting will be held TOMORROW, January 7th at 7PM in the library.

New members welcome-- we ask that members try to commit to coming to all/most of the meetings so that the work can get done in the most efficient manner possible.  This committee does require a good amount of meetings, so it is helpful if that time is not spent recapping previous meetings! If any of you are interested feel free to show up or email Katherine Ropp roppkat@comcast.net with questions.
