Assistant Principal's Note

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the 2013 Chinese Bridge Delegation hosted by College Board, Hanban Institute and the Confucius Institute.  Through this program I was able to visit schools and universities in Beijing and Chongqing.  This week long program was designed to help educators build relationships with the facilitators of Chinese programs.

My experience in China was quite impressive. Some of my expectations and biases towards the Chinese education system were confirmed; however, I was completely surprised to see the progressive approach toward educational change in China.  I witnessed schools striving to increase student engagement, providing universal instruction of English, emphasizing the development of the whole child, and working to unlock individual potential.

There are many similarities between the Chinese and US school systems.  Shortly after we get

back from Thanksgiving Break I will host a coffee hour to share my experiences in China.  Look for that date to be announced when we get back.

I look forward to sharing with you!

Next week is teacher conferences and Thanksgiving Holiday, so there is NO SCHOOL from Monday, November 25th through the 29th.

The Department of Transportation was out at Salmon Bay last week replacing our Handicapped parking sign as well as adding a second handicapped parking spot.  There are now TWO handicapped parking spots on 18th, by the North doors on that side.  Please by mindful to not park in the handicapped spaces unless you have a valid handicapped parking permit; they are used daily by those with permits.

Thanks to everyone who came out for the University Bookstore Book Fair this weekend.  You still have an opportunity to shop at the store until 7 PM tonight and online until Midnight (use code SBS at check out). A super great big thank you to Julie Kosev who took this on just a few short weeks ago and ran it like she's been doing it for years.

This Saturday is our Fair Trade Fair and Pancake Breakfast.  This is a fun, social event.  Come out and have a yummy breakfast ($7/person $25/family) and shop fair trade crafts and products. Entrance to Fair Trade Fair is free!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and thanks for all you do for our kids,

Sharon

Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note
want to send a giant thank you to all the families who supported our book fair either in person or online.  It is still going on through today, so it is not too late to show your support for the Salmon Bay library and do some shopping.  Be sure to use the code SBS when checking out online or in the store. Thank you also to Julie Kosev for stepping up and running this event like a seasoned pro.

Next week there are no classes Monday- Wednesday so that conferences can be held.   There is also no school Thursday and Friday due to the Thanksgiving holiday.  Enjoy the time off!

Pancake Breakfast and Fair Trade Fair-   Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) will host a Pancake Breakfast and Fair Trade and Alternative Gift Fair on Saturday, November 23th.  The Pancake Breakfast will run from 9 - 12 ($7 per person/$25 per family).  The Fair Trade Fair will run from 9 - 2 (free).

We now have a new handicap parking spot on 18th avenue at the drop off/pick up zone.  This brings the total to 2 and they are both used most days so please be respectful of them when coming to school.

I hope your week away from school is joyful and rejuvenating!

Caitlin

Notes from the Co-chairs
We want to thank Principal Jen Benkovitz for taking the time before our regular FOSB meeting to share more about how Salmon Bay is working towards realizing its vision. Thanks, too, to Sam Olson, who joined us after WEP to highlight the value of the program to students, to Kim Post for highlighting an opportunity to bring-in training for the school's science kits that the district has reduced, to Sally Massa for a lively look into the world of Kindergarten when students welcomed their principal into the classroom, and to the mini-grant committee for their hard work and dedication. Your FOSB leadership and volunteer coordinators are beginning to plan the agenda for our January retreat, and your building leadership team (BLT) continues to help define "alternative education" at Salmon Bay.

Petition to Support Continuing Middle School Preference for Thornton Creek Students

Currently, one of the tie breakers for Middle School placement at Salmon Bay is for Thornton Creek Students.  Historically, FOSB has written a letter of support for this preference to the School Board. We have been asked to share the following letter by Joan Kelly, a Thornton Creek Parent and Salmon Bay Alumni Parent:
----------

Dear Salmon Bay families,

We are in serious jeopardy of losing the long running board approval for the special preference/tie breaker status for Thornton Creek 5th graders entering Salmon Bay School at 6th grade.  We do not have any board member agreeing to present this amendment at this time and the vote is coming so early this year (Nov 20th) that we have not had time to rally the herculean support that would be needed in order to sway the board in our favor.  Nevertheless, we would like to request that you add your name to this petition in support of creative approach schools. We would like to let the board know that it remains important to our community that our students continue to have alternative school options in middle school.  Please also take a look at the attached letter and if you are inclined, send this letter, written by John Allen (Thornton Creek parent), or one like it to all of the board members.

For those of you who have not been aware of this preference, please see this as your opportunity to let the school board know how much you value the alternative/creative approach education your child/ren are receiving at Salmon Bay and Thornton Creek and that you would like this type of education to be available to families committed to alternative education in middle school.

Thanks for whatever you can do to support this effort.

Mary K. to be in a Holiday Show this December.
From Mary K.
I'm going to be in a show this December - called The Christmas Revels.  It's set in Appalachia, and I'm going to be a story-teller and a sword dancer.  The children will recognize "Aunt Minnie and the Turkeys". The show is great fun - always a Solstice theme of dark and light.  I call the show "The Celebration of Foolishness".  Song, dance, laughter, sometimes a tear...good feeling of being alive kind of show.  It's appropriate for families - lasts a couple of hours and there is an intermission.  It's down in Tacoma at the Rialto Theater.  Dec. 14-18.  (The matinee shows tend to fill up pretty quick).
Hope to see y'all there!
Mary K.
