November 12, 2013
Dear SB K-8 Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed the longer weekend with family and friends. The dogs and I enjoyed long walks together at Discovery Park. It's hard to believe the Thanksgiving holiday is right around the corner.
I've been keeping very busy the past couple of weeks meeting with individual teachers to discuss their district required "student growth" goals. Each teacher has developed one or more goals focused on improving student achievement in his/her classroom. While this may sound like a rather mundane process, I have actually really enjoyed having this time to meet individually with so many teachers to learn about their area(s) of focus and feel very confident that our collective efforts are going to have a positive impact on our students as we continue to work together.
We have a lot going on the next few weeks, so be sure to stay in the loop. For those of you with students in 4th through 8th grade, I encourage you to attend tomorrow night's parent session about student- led conferencing. Nancy and Megan will be leading this session and are looking forward to sharing helpful information with you and gathering your input for future consideration. On Thursday night, the MS teams are hosting a WEP information session in the auditorium at 6:00 p.m. and FOSB is hosting a coffee talk and monthly FOSB meeting beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the library. I hope to see many of you at one or more of these events.
Let's have a great week together.
Thanks, Jen

Hi Parents! You should have received an Enrichment Fee letter from me last week in your email. If you need a payment plan or to request a scholarship that information needs to be filled out by November 30. If you are paying in full, payment is due by December 11. The Enrichment Fee is separate from our Direct Giving campaign. The timing of the two campaigns are usually a bit more spaced out, but it took a bit longer to set up the online payment form than we had anticipated. So, because we are asking for money from you for two different things at the same time I thought I would explain the differences between the two campaigns. Enrichment Fee: The money collected from the Enrichment Fee is money that is spent directly on YOUR child. It is for field trips, bus fares, camps costs and supplies for special, specific projects for each student. The fee is determined by your child's teacher based on their plans for the year. Enrichment Fee is not a fundraiser, it is a mandatory fee(instead of asking for a check every time there is a field trip, assembly, etc.) to cover expenses incurred by your child. Because it is a fee for services rendered it is not tax-deductible or eligible for corporate matching. Scholarships are available for any family that puts in a scholarship request. Any donations to the scholarship fund are tax-deductible and eligible for matching. Direct Giving: Direct Giving IS a fundraiser. The money that is raised during Direct Giving goes to the FOSB General fund and is used to support teachers and students in every grade and in every program. It's our second biggest funraiser of the year (after the auction), and is one of the easiest...all you have to do is write a check. Contributions are tax-deductible and eligible for employer-matching. We would love every family in Salmon Bay to contribute at whatever level works for their family, whether that be $5 or $500. Each of these programs are important. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me. Another great fundraiser that we do here at Salmon Bay is our Fall Bookfair at the University Bookstore. The bookfair is this weekend (from Firday to Monday). It's a very fun event! You can shop for Holiday gifts, shop for your child's classroom or just shop to round out your personal library. We have a full schedule of events to participate in, or you can shop online using the code SBS. We get a whopping 25% which goes to our library. Linda hopes to beef-up our non-fiction section with the proceeds from the bookfair! Check out the schedule of events: Sat, Nov 16: 10-12 Childcare with crafts and games while parents stop 12-12:30 Storytime with Sally 1-3 Read-In (silent reading marathon for independent readers with snacks)
Sun, Nov 17
12:30-1 Dorothy reads
1-1:30 Sing with Mary K.
1:30-2 Carita Reads
2:30-4 Edible Book Fest For more information see the FOSB section in the newsletter. Have a great week! Sharon

4th - 8th Grade Parents: Making the Most of Student-led Conferences
HEY THERE 4th-8th GRADE PARENTS/GUARDIANS -
DID YOU KNOW that student-led conferences begin in 4th grade and continue through 8th grade at Salmon Bay? These conferences are an exploration of recent work guided by students themselves, as opposed to the parent-teacher conversations that happen in earlier grades. If you are new to student-led conferences, or are simply looking for tips about how your student-led conference participation can be most effective, then please join us for STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES: 101. Nancy Gruber and Megan Ratcliffe will be leading this parent-to-parent event on WEDNESDAY, NOV. 13, 7-8:30pm in the auditorium. There will be a presentation from 7-8, including time for Q & A, with some time for tasty treats and spill-over conversation afterward until 8:30.
Questions? Please contact Nancy Gruber at negruber@seattleschools.org

Parent's guide to underage marijuana use
Dear Middle School Parents/Guardians,
Marijuana use can be very confusing for kids and adults in Washington. With the recent legalization of marijuana, middle schoolers may think that it isn't a "big deal" since it is now legal. I have attached a link to a guide for parents, published by Seattle Children's Hospital and Social Development Research Group, to help prevent underage marijuana use. http://www.preventionworksinseattle.org/uploads/Parent-handbook_Oct2013.pdf
If you have any questions or concerns about the guide or your child's marijuana use, please don't hesitate to connect with me.
Take care, Anthony Malaki Counselor Salmon Bay School 252-1742

Notes from the Co-chairs
Join us this Thursday at 6:00 pm for coffee hour and 7:00 pm for November's FOSB meeting!
The monthly agenda and committee reports are attached to this Bulletin. This month we will hear from our mini-grant committee which has reviewed all the mini-grant grant applications and is presenting funding recommendations for FOSB discussion and approval. November is also the month that we elect new FOSB directors. Directors make a commitment to attend monthly meetings and stay current on FOSB business and discussions. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Jodi or Robin. And don't forget about our 6 p.m. coffee hour. It's your chance to provide feedback and ask questions. Jen will be available along with FOSB leadership and we would love to hear from you!
Middle school parents: Are you coming to WEP this week? If so, please stop by the FOSB meeting afterward. We would love to see you there!
The bylaws committee is having some robust and interesting conversations about a number of governance issues, chief among them how to engage more middle school parents, the process of reaching consensus, a reorganization of the bylaws from an editorial perspective, the creation of standing committees, and imagining how those standing committees might work. Whether you can join us or not, you might have questions and ideas to share with the group -- email Robin Lofstrom at clevelandette@gmail.com and we can get started today. We'll meet next Monday at 7:00 pm, location TBD.
At a recent FOSB meeting, we learned a little bit about student-led conferences. This Wednesday, you have an opportunity to learn more than we did! We urge you to join Megan Ratcliffe and Nancy Gruber at 7:00 pm this Wednesday.
Keeping on top of news here is never the easiest thing. So many streams of information! But if you pop-over to our website, you'll see that middle school students in the media arts class have posted their radio podcasts. Teacher Glyde Hart-King says that the class " ... is basically a non-fiction writing class using all the media at our fingertips. On to documentary movie-making next!" Glyde welcomes your news tips and ideas, and emails are the easiest route to busy, busy her.

Join 1,000 kids, family members, teachers and administrators for Seattle MathFest! MathFest is a city-wide celebration of elementary school communities and math, hosted by Seattle-based nonprofit Zeno. This is a one-of-a-kind event where elementary students and their siblings play carnival-like math games, win prizes and have fun. While playing, kids build their confidence in and enthusiasm for math. Come watch these families experience math in a whole new way-in an atmosphere of adventure, learning and discovery!
5:00 PM Doors open, refreshments served
7:00 PM Refreshment service ends
7:30PM Games close, awards ceremony and prize distribution begins
8:00 PM Doors close
Background:
According to the Community Center for Education Results (CCER) Road Map Project, fourth grade math proficiency is a key indicator of high school graduation. The OSPI 2012/13 WA State Report Card reports only 62.5% of fourth graders statewide are meeting math standards. New research out of the University of Missouri is revealing that what children know about numbers as early as when they enter first grade plays a big role in how well they do everyday calculations later in life. We aren't talking about advanced calculus and descriptive statistics. We're talking basic math-calculating percentages and adding fractions. Ordinary tasks that are disqualifying people from today's jobs. One Seattle non-profit, Zeno believes that the problem stems from the negative culture (beliefs, behaviors and attitudes) that has been built around mathematics and addresses this at the source-helping kids build a strong, positive foundation in math.

Opportunity for HIGH SCHOOL Students to attend a fully-funded leadership experince in Brazil
What is the US Youth Ambassador Program?
This program is a fully-funded youth exchange program sponsored by the US Department of State and implemented by World Learning. This program is the reverse exchange program for the Brazil Youth Ambassador Program that comes to Seattle every January through the World Affairs Council, and is designed to promote mutual understanding between Brazil and the US, prepare youth leaders for responsible and engaged citizenship, and foster global youth networks.
Seattle-area students attending public school and adult mentors with US citizenship can apply.
This program is geared toward students who show leadership potential and a passion for global issues, and have NOT traveled abroad for personal or academic reasons in the past.
The application period runs November 1-December, 2013.
Please also share this within your local networks of local high school students and with adults who work with youth in a leadership position.
Please read the application and the attached one-pagers CAREFULLY for more eligibility requirements and program details.
The first round of interviews will occur the beginning of December
by World Affairs Council staff. Please be in touch with any questions or concerns, and I hope this finds you all well! I am still so grateful for your participation as host families over the last year!

Mary K. to be in a Holiday Show this December.
From Mary K.
I'm going to be in a show this December - called The Christmas Revels. It's set in Appalachia, and I'm going to be a story-teller and a sword dancer. The children will recognize "Aunt Minnie and the Turkeys". The show is great fun - always a Solstice theme of dark and light. I call the show "The Celebration of Foolishness". Song, dance, laughter, sometimes a tear...good feeling of being alive kind of show. It's appropriate for families - lasts a couple of hours and there is an intermission. It's down in Tacoma at the Rialto Theater. Dec. 14-18. (The matinee shows tend to fill up pretty quick).
Hope to see y'all there!
Mary K.
