Principal's Note

Dear Salmon Bay Families,

It's hard to believe that the first quarter of the school year is behind us already. I would like to take a moment to share some of the highlights with you.

I have truly enjoyed seeing the positive impact of the school-wide implementation of Responsive Classroom and Developmental Designs practices. As you know, a primary focus this year has been on the implementation of Morning (MS Advisory) meetings in each of the classrooms. Whether joining as an observer or participant, I am always left feeling confident that our kids are beginning each school day here with important lessons about recognition of self and others, empathy, compassion and joy in learning. The consistency across our school with some increasingly common routines, procedures and language is a necessary first step as we continue to work toward our vision.

At the K/5 level, I am especially excited about the opportunity that adopting the TERC Investigations curriculum has afforded our staff and students. Students seem excited about the new materials and the lessons I've observed have been hands on and have fostered student inquiry. Many of you receive TERC "family news" from the teachers in their weekly newsletters informing you of specific skills and strategies that have been introduced and practiced in the classroom and ideas for how you can reinforce this work at home.

At the middle school level, I am excited about this year's implementation of Friday sixth period Clubs for our 7th and 8th graders. The clubs being offered reflect students' interests in areas such as photography, art, martial arts, global studies and much more. During this time each week, the 7th and 8th grade teachers have a common prep period to collaborate with one another within and/or across teams. The 6th grade is also trying something new this year. For the first time, all sixth graders are participating in a 6 class rotation for one of their exploratories. The students were placed in "cohorts" at the beginning of the year and rotate together every 6 weeks. Classes include creative writing, typing, problem solving, etc. So far, the kids have really been enjoying this opportunity. One of the classes (Healthy Choices) is being taught by Anthony, one of our counselors, and he has really enjoyed getting to know our 6th graders on a more personal level this year.

I am also thankful for many of the traditions that have continued this year, beginning with our Friday Sings with Mary K that always end our week together on a perfect note. Recently, some middle school students joined in on the fun, leading some of the songs for the excited crowd. Last week's Halloween parade was another tradition that I looked forward to and enjoyed. Students dressed up (some even dressed up their stuffed animals) and paraded around the track while families cheered them on and took pictures of the memorable moment. Some even braved a visit to Glyde's student-led Haunted House -- a true must if you can handle a bit of a scare! Finally, the tradition of MS Activity Day on the last day of the quarter was something else to look forward to and went off without a hitch. The kids planned everything including the snacks, the decision to have a DJ, the tasks involved in successful set-up and clean-up, etc. Everyone seemed to have a blast. It was a great end to the first quarter.

All in all, it's been a really nice start to the year and I'm looking forward to what the new quarter has in store for us. If you did not have a chance to make it to last week's FOSB hosted "coffee talk," please try to come to the next one on Thursday, November 14th at 6:00 p.m. The "coffee talk" hour was put in place by FOSB this year to give parents the opportunity to come to the school with questions or comments about Salmon Bay and to partake in a somewhat informal conversation with administration and other parents. Last week was our first one and I really enjoyed hearing from the parents and having the opportunity to respond to their input. Be sure to click on the October "coffee talk" link in the bulletin so that you can read the notes and learn more about what's happening this year at Salmon Bay. In the meantime, I continue to have an open door policy and encourage you to always stop by for a visit if there is something you would like to discuss with me.

Let's have a great week together.

Thanks,

Jen

Parent's guide to underage marijuana use

Dear Middle School Parents/Guardians,

Marijuana use can be very confusing for kids and adults in Washington.  With the recent legalization of marijuana, middle schoolers may think that it isn't a "big deal" since it is now legal.  I have attached a link to a guide for parents, published by Seattle Children's Hospital and Social Development Research Group, to help prevent underage marijuana use. http://www.preventionworksinseattle.org/uploads/Parent-handbook_Oct2013.pdf

If you have any questions or concerns about the guide or your child's marijuana use, please don't hesitate to connect with me.

Take care,

Anthony Malaki

Friends of Salmon Bay Information
Notes from the Co-chairs

Thank you to Jen, Brett and all the parents who were able to join us for coffee hour last week. We were able to touch upon a number of topics that are important to our school. Minutes from the coffee discussion are posted here: http://www.salmonbayschool.org/announcements/2013-11-03_fosb-coffee-hour-notes-103013 for your reference. Please mark your calendars for our next coffee chat on November 14th at 6 p.m. immediately followed by our November FOSB meeting at 7 p.m.

Seven years ago, parent Jen Busch had a very cool idea: Give the gift of music! Thanks to that one great idea, over $10,000 has been raised for our students, and dozens and dozens of parents, staff, and community members have been able to take the stage and showcase their musical talents. Our 14th Rock fer FOSB is this Friday night with a line-up that even includes alumni parents--that's how rocking cool it is. So please join us this Friday at 7:00 pm at the Ballard Eagles. All proceeds benefit Salmon Bay. (And you might just want to join in yourself next time, right?)

If you haven't had a chance to go up into the library after school on Tuesdays, then you haven't seen all the boys and girls in our programming club working hard, having fun, asking questions, and making friends. Facilitator Greg Foltz says that personally, he's motivated " ... to introduce girls to programming; there's a real imbalance in the industry ... (and) whether by nature of nurture, boys in our society are more inclined towards fooling around with computers. I believe that girls will become interested if they're purposefully exposed to the idea." Greg and his cohorts have introduced the Scratch programming language which was put together by a team at MIT, who believes that if Scratch were a room, it would have a low floor (easy to get started), wide walls (stretch the imagination), and high ceiling (shoot for the stars). Luckily, the upgraded computers have made a big difference, and some of that funding was provided by you! Greg would like some help to help expand the program into the middle school. "It broke my heart to have to exclude a few highly motivated 6th graders this year that were active participants last year." Thirty kids signed-up; at least six were turned away. If you're interested in adding a session so that we can include the middle school students, and better manage the 2nd-5th grade age range, Greg, along with Hector Rovira and Jay Hoover, would sure like to talk to you if you can help! Email Greg at gfoltz@gmail.com.

Finally, we would like to thank educator Nancy Gruber and other staff who are providing a very thoughtful event next Wednesday evening to help parents understand the value and approach of student-led conferences, which is new for some families. Please join them!
