Assistant Principal's Note

In the classroom...

Last week, I had the wonderful opportunity to facilitate a project with both Nicolette's and Brian's classes.  We challenged their students to demonstrate their understanding of circuits by creating a mini electrical power grid.  Students took on the roles of engineers, operators, system managers and linemen/women as they actively constructed distribution lines from a central power facility to their team's community to power a small switch and light.  It was great to see students problem solve and construct new knowledge through this direct, hands-on experience.  A big THANK YOU to both Nicolette and Brian!

Additional highlights from the classrooms include seeing Melanie's students stimulate the digestive system with plastic tubing, witnessing unicycling in PE, and great homeroom meetings in several classrooms.  These activities reinforced that Salmon Bay is a great school that strives to engage students in active and true learning experiences.

Have a great week,
Brett
Elementary Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Hi Families!

We are getting a salad bar in the cafeteria starting on Monday, October28th!  While this is SUPER exciting, it may be a little overwhelming for our K-2nd graders.  We are looking for volunteers to come help our littlest diners navigate this new cafeteria feature. If you can help please sign up for a slot here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4DA4AA23A1FE3-elementary (You don't have to register to sign up, but if you do you can edit your sign up later).

We are also starting our Backpack Food Assistance program in partnership with the Ballard Food Bank this week. This program provides students with a weekend's worth of food to take home in their backpack on Friday afternoon. If you would like to assist us in making this program happen you can sign up to pick up the food here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4DA4AA23A1FE3-food

If you would like your child to receive a food package on Fridays please email me at [email protected] or call me at 206-252-1730. Participation is confidential and food will be delivered to students as discreetly as possible.

Our Costume Parade will be on Friday, October 31 at 1:30 on the upper field. If you would like to help out please email me at  [email protected]. Please do not send your child to school in costume, send it in a bag. Please check with your child's teacher for when they will have kids change into costumes, they may need your help!

On October 30th at 8 AM please Join Jen and FOSB Leadership for a coffee hour in the cafeteria. This is a chance from you to ask questions, socialize and get to know our FOSB team. If you can't make that coffee hour there will be another on one November 14th at 6 PM, prior to the November FOSB meeting.

On Friday, November 1st from 6-8 PM, our newly formed Hospitality Committee is hosting a Family Potluck. Come bring a dish to share, and get to know other Salmon Bay Parents!

Thanks!

Sharon

Planning for Growth

Seattle Public Schools: Planning for growth

October 2013 update

Seattle Public Schools is creating new attendance area boundaries to accommodate our increasing enrollment and construction of new school buildings.

The initial focus is on elementary and middle school boundaries. High school boundaries will be reviewed at a later date.

The latest list of proposed boundary changes can be found online at: http://bit.ly/GrowthBoundaries. If you need access to a computer, there are public computers with Internet in the lobby of the John Stanford Center, 2445 3rd Ave. South, Seattle Public Libraries or ask your school administration.

Next steps:

  • District seeks public input via a survey from Oct. 14-25. The survey is online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7BKFRS3.
  • Revised recommendations will be sent to the Board for the Nov. 6 meeting
  • A School Board vote is scheduled for Nov. 20.
  • If approved by the School Board, implementation of some of the new elementary and middle school boundaries will begin for the 2014-15 school year, although many boundary changes cannot go into effect until Building Excellence IV (BEX IV) capital levy construction projects are completed.

Please note: Regardless of what is approved, boundary changes will be phased in over time. Many changes cannot be made until construction of new schools or additions are complete. Current elementary students will be able to remain at their school through the highest grade.

Friends of Salmon Bay Information

Notes from your FOSB Co-Chairs

This past Thursday, 25 parents, principal Jen Benkovitz, and teachers Brian Williamson, Kim Post, and Jon Olver joined together for our October FOSB meeting-many thanks to you all! A quick rundown of the substantive issues we discussed follows:

  • Salmon Bay, like all other schools in Washington state, must adhere to the state-adopted Common Core standards.
  • Preparing students for their lives as graduates means an emphasis on "21st century skills," which includes teaching and modeling collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking, as well as providing appropriate instruction with technology. What that looks like grade-by-grade is being discussed.
  •  The staff continues to examine ways to enrich, implement, or renew project-based learning at Salmon Bay, which is one way we hope to meet those standards.
  • We acknowledge that MAP testing and district-mandated report cards are not the tools we need to authentically assess student learning-there's work to be done, but we're excited to do it.
  • Salmon Bay is the only school in the district which has been given a waiver from the district-provided professional development program this year, so that we can partner with Envisions Learning to further examine how to implement our mission, vision, and values.
  • Middle school math teacher Jon Olver shared his very helpful insight into what the curricular intent is of student-led conferences, which is a chance for students to self-examine their learning, and to practice presentation skills. It's a great time for families to listen, but to follow-up individually with teachers to ask questions afterwards.
  • 4th grade teacher Brian Williamson shared an article from Edutopia about another important lens to look through when evaluating student learning: the simple joy of looking forward to school every day. Parents enjoyed reminiscing about the ways in which their school experiences were fun and memorable!

One of the topics that arose from our meeting is a concern among parents that perhaps FOSB and the administration aren't mindful that standards and our new vision and mission impacts teachers in ways that are difficult and uncomfortable in our community. We must remember that for every parent or staff member who is excited about the direction we're headed in, there's another parent or staff member who is concerned.

We also heard the concern that parents don't really understand who FOSB is, what FOSB does, and how FOSB works. We'll address that via a written communication piece that we'll distribute as widely as possible, and we encourage you to contact us with your specific questions.

Over the weekend, the chairs partnered with the parent representatives on the building leadership team to reflect on those concerns that parents on Thursday expressed. We will try to provide more opportunities to hear questions and concerns, as well as enhance the communications we can provide.

This is a good time to provide a gentle reminder that we structure the agenda each month so that topics are timely, and that time is thoughtfully provided for. Please, if you have an item or topic to add to our agenda, allow us to provide that time and space in advance. Please don't hesitate to contact us, for we are always happy to take your call and respond to your emails.

Before we close, we wanted you to know that the following can all be found online: budget, bylaws, minutes of past meetings, and the parent handbook. We try to keep you informed as best we can, and ask for your patience and understanding as we strive to improve our efforts.

Thank you!

Robin Lofstom and Jodi Russell

Bylaws committee re-convening.

Are you interested in good governance, enjoy robust discussions, and have time for three evening meetings? Then join the bylaws committee! As a practical matter, our bylaws haven't changed since 2009, and every few years it's a good idea to review them, make sure that they represent good governance, reflect the ways in which FOSB operates or would like to operate, and more. On the surface it may sound like dry and dull work, but past experience shows that it's engaging, informative, and useful to the wider community. Contact Robin Lofstrom [email protected] and we'll determine the best times to meet between now and December's FOSB meeting.

Rock For FOSB - Are you a wanabee rockstar (or an actual rockstar)?

You may have caught this news item in the Onion (America's finest News Source):  After months of ceaseless debate, including last week's record 76-hour filibuster slap-bass solo from Senate Rubber Band Minority Leader Bootsy Collins (D-OH), the National Funk Congress is no closer to resolving its deadlock over the controversial "get up/get down" issue, insiders reported Monday.

Salmon Bay School parents and staff will be doing their part to resolve this issue amicably at our semi-annual Rock for FOSB, a night out with live music by & for parents/staff, past & present.  Whether you boogie down or prefer to rock it up, this is your chance to connect with the musically inclined adults in our school community.  Who will be the surprise guests this year?  Maybe it's you!  Save the date:  Friday November 8, starting at 8 pm, at your nearby Ballard Eagles [5216 20th Ave NW (between N Leary Ave & N Russell Ave)

Community Announcements
Girls in Engineering, Math and Science (GEMS) now enrolling!

GEMS is a science enrichment program for 7th and 8th grade girls currently attending a Seattle Public Middle School. The goal of the program is to encourage girls to maintain and broaden their interest in STEM subjects by providing mentoring, hands-on activities, field trips, and information pertaining to a variety of scientific fields.

We meet one evening per month and host various field trips throughout the year.  We have two locations this year, one at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in South Lake Union, and one at South Seattle Community College in West Seattle. The program is free and fully funded by Seattle AWIS, a nonprofit organization.  Transportation to and from all events is required, but if there is enough demand, we will try to organize ride shares or other transport.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2013/14 school year, and submissions are due by October 24th.  A link to the application and more information about the program is available at:

Ballard Knights Junior Football and Cheer

Ballard Junior Football and Cheer has been providing youth football and cheer opportunities in the greater Seattle community for over 50 years, and we would like to invite prospective players and their parents to come get to know us, watch some football, eat some (free) food, and enter for the chance to win a pair of Seahawks tickets!

Ballard Junior Football plays in the Northwest Junior Football league, which uses age and weight to divide kids aged 6-14 into six levels of play.  Safety and quality instruction is a top priority, and to that end all the coaches in the NJFL are certified through USA football through both their Tackle Certification for coaching football as well as their Heads-Up Certification for teaching safer tackling and concussion awareness.  Our primary goal is teaching kids safe football while instilling a love for the game and good sportsmanship.

We would like to invite parents and kids to get to know us better by attending our next home game to watch our 89ers (8- and 9-year-olds).  We are especially looking forward to meeting players who might be interested in joining our 76ers (6- and 7-year olds) team next year!

The game starts at 4:30pm at Loyal Heights Community Center, 2101 NW 77st, Seattle, WA, 98117.  We will be playing Silverlake on Saturday, October 12.

At the game, prospective new players in grades K-5 will receive a free hot dog, and their parents can register to win a pair of Seahawks tickets!  We'd love to see you out there!

Please feel free to contact us at  http://ballardjuniorfootball.org with any questions. Thank you.
