K-5 Curriculum Night

Dear Parents,

The K-5 Curriculum Night is this Thursday from 7 PM to 9 PM.  This is an excellent opportunity to familiarize oneself with the teaching and learning that takes place in your child's classroom and is a perfect occasion to connect with your child's teachers and school staff.

This year at Curriculum Night you will learn how Salmon Bay is implementing a new school wide homeroom/advisory program, how teachers are using Common Core State Standards, and how technology is being used to enhance student learning.  Each classroom teacher will be sharing classroom presentations designed to help you better understand your child's school day.

We look forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night!

Jen and Brett

Note of Appreciation

The experiential learning provided at Salmon Bay is only available because of the support and dedication of our parent community.  Over 75 parent volunteers helped make our middle school fall camps possible this last week.  Thank you!

Elementary Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Hi Parents,

Please join us for K-5 Curriculum Night, this Thursday, October 10th from 7PM-9PM.  We will start the evening in the cafeteria where Principal Jen, Assistant Principal Brett and I will give some general information.  Then you will head to your child's classroom for an overview of the year from your child's teacher.  After that session, there will be time to visit a second classroom.

COHO Kids' Time (our on site childcare) will be offering childcare for curriculum night from 6:45-9:15pm. Pre registration is required by calling @ 206-297-7764, email at coho@positiveplace.org or dropping in prior to the event. Cost is $5 per child (siblings under 5 okay if potty trained). Payment is due in CASH upon drop off.

If you stopped into my office today you may have noticed that I have a new "In box" right inside my door.  If you need to give me paperwork and I'm not around, this is the place to leave it.  If you need to leave me a check please place it in an envelope (which are conveniently available on the inbox) and please write what the check is for on the memo line.  Thanks for helping me keep your paperwork safe and organized!

Speaking of paperwork, if you have not turned in your first day packet, please do so!  I especially the white criminal background check form if you are planning on heading on a field trip with your child.

There is NO SCHOOL for students on Friday.

Thanks,

Sharon

Middle School Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Hopefully by now your middle school student has caught up on sleep after camp and is ready for October!  I had the pleasure of going to camp with the 6th grade team and as always I thoroughly enjoyed watching our kids challenge themselves and have fun in a camp environment.  Camp wouldn't be possible if we didn't have amazingly devoted staff who were willing to donate their time, energy and enthusiasm to make this experience happen.  Thank you to all of them for doing this for our students!

Camp also wouldn't happen without a huge volunteer effort on the part of the parents.  From the almost 75 chaperone volunteers who went to camp, to the people who drove, shopped, packed, donated and made sure their student went to camp prepared we thank you!   None of this would happen without each and every one of you!

While we are talking of camp, Nurse Julie needs you to pick up your medication that you sent to camp with your student.  She doesn't have room to store extra meds and would appreciate you picking up asap.  Please email her at jkaloper@seattleschools.org if you have any questions.   She is also someone who puts forth a huge effort above and beyond her job in order to get all our kids to camp safely.  Let her know how much you appreciate this next time you see her!

Tonight PIE (Parent Information Ecxhange) is hosting two great informational speakers.  Join us at 7PM in the auditorium for "It's Not MY kid!"  An important discussion on drugs and alcohol with tips to guide your teen and a chance to review the latest Student Health Survey.

Don't forget that there is no school  this Friday October 11th due to a district mandated professional development day.

Have a great week,  Caitlin

The Raising Our Daughters Book Club starts tomorrow, Tues Oct. 8th, but it's not too late to sign up!

We'll be meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of each month to discuss the chapters of this enriching book about girls of middle school age, at TC Cooke's house in North Ballard.  This will be a kid-free event.  While this book (and its twin, Raising Our Sons) are helpful at any age, this group will focus on parents of girls in 5th-8th grade at Salmon Bay.  Our first meeting is on Tuesday October 8th from 7:00 until 8:30 or 9:00 pm.  Bring wine or a snack to share, or don't ~ either way is fine!  It always works out.

If you're interested, have questions or are signing up and need the address, please email TC at barefoot.tc@gmail.com.   You can also text or call:  206-276-2606.  Interested in forming the Raising Our Sons Book Group?  Great!  Email TC for how to get started.

Please try to get a copy of this book, but if you don't have a chance to read the first chapter before our first meeting, that's okay.  It will be a good chance to introduce ourselves and share about our kids and their challenges while we get to know each other.  Here's a link to the book at Amazon:

New FOSB Class Liason Committee Recruiting liaisons

Hi Families,

This new committee is dedicated to improve communication of FOSB activity to and from families through a network of elementary and middle school parent liaisons. We are currently seeking parents interested in volunteering to be a liaison representing all parents in a particular class or grade level. A liaison would:

  • Maintain an email group for their class or grade
  • Rotate attendance with other liaisons to monthly FOSB meetings (depending on the number of liaisons, may be 1-2 times per year) and share with other liaisons for dissemination.
  • Send monthly email to class/grade with updates from FOSB meetings and bring relevant parent topics to FOSB meetings. (e.g. walking school bus, elections/recruiting, survey participation)
  • Coordinate with other liaisons as needed

This is a great way for parents to volunteer who have limited availability to volunteer at the school or in the classroom. We hope that you join us in our goal to help families connect with FOSB. If interested, please email Hillary at hikkerfeet@comcast.net and let us know you are interested. We are in particular need of parents willing to represent a K, 3, 6 grade class(s). We will be having an orientation in late October or early November so let me know if you are interested soon.

Thanks so much,

FOSB Class Liaison Committee members

(Hillary, Danielle, Darcy, Sara Knopf)

Girls in Engineering, Math and Science (GEMS) now enrolling!

GEMS is a science enrichment program for 7th and 8th grade girls currently attending a Seattle Public Middle School. The goal of the program is to encourage girls to maintain and broaden their interest in STEM subjects by providing mentoring, hands-on activities, field trips, and information pertaining to a variety of scientific fields.

We meet one evening per month and host various field trips throughout the year.  We have two locations this year, one at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in South Lake Union, and one at South Seattle Community College in West Seattle. The program is free and fully funded by Seattle AWIS, a nonprofit organization.  Transportation to and from all events is required, but if there is enough demand, we will try to organize ride shares or other transport.

We are currently accepting applications for the 2013/14 school year, and submissions are due by October 24th.  A link to the application and more information about the program is available at:

Ballard Knights Junior Football and Cheer

Ballard Junior Football and Cheer has been providing youth football and cheer opportunities in the greater Seattle community for over 50 years, and we would like to invite prospective players and their parents to come get to know us, watch some football, eat some (free) food, and enter for the chance to win a pair of Seahawks tickets!

Ballard Junior Football plays in the Northwest Junior Football league, which uses age and weight to divide kids aged 6-14 into six levels of play.  Safety and quality instruction is a top priority, and to that end all the coaches in the NJFL are certified through USA football through both their Tackle Certification for coaching football as well as their Heads-Up Certification for teaching safer tackling and concussion awareness.  Our primary goal is teaching kids safe football while instilling a love for the game and good sportsmanship.

We would like to invite parents and kids to get to know us better by attending our next home game to watch our 89ers (8- and 9-year-olds).  We are especially looking forward to meeting players who might be interested in joining our 76ers (6- and 7-year olds) team next year!

The game starts at 4:30pm at Loyal Heights Community Center, 2101 NW 77st, Seattle, WA, 98117.  We will be playing Silverlake on Saturday, October 12.

At the game, prospective new players in grades K-5 will receive a free hot dog, and their parents can register to win a pair of Seahawks tickets!  We'd love to see you out there!

Please feel free to contact us at  http://ballardjuniorfootball.org with any questions. Thank you.
