Morning Meeting Highlights The start of this school year has been quite beautiful, as we have witnessed every classroom teacher start the day with a morning meeting. This daily routine is quickly building a stronger learning community as the whole class gathers to greet one another, share news and warm up for the day ahead. Below are a few special highlights that we have witnessed: - Carita incorporated a full body and brain warm-up with a brain dance in her morning meeting.
- Dave hosted a sharing activity where students brought summer artifacts into class to share...including the rattle from a Rattle Snake!
- Hien and Dan were witnessing laughing with students as they played a joyful name game.
- Melanie and Markos quickly developed trust within their group enabling students to openly share meaningful events.
We look for ward to seeing improved classroom behavior and academic growth within the Salmon Bay K-8 learning community as we implement social and emotional teaching strategies in our morning meetings and daily teaching. Learn more about the morning meetings by visiting:www.originsonline.org. The K-5th grade levels are implementing a program called Responsive Classroom while Developmental Designs is being integrated into our 6th-8th grades. 7th-8th Grade Club Registration This school year we have created a 50-minute block for student clubs on Fridays during 7th period. Student clubs open the door to new friendships, broaden student learning, and provid e opportunities to explore new interests and careers. While many students are involved in activities and/or clubs outside of school, we think students should have similar opportunities during the day here at school. Below is the list of clubs being offered this semester. You can learn more about clubs and help your child register for a club atwww.tinyurl.com/sbsclubs. 2013 Clubs: Cartooning Club, Cooking Club, Fitness Challenge, Glee Club/Rock Band, Global Connect Club, GSA, Guitar Circle, Library Club, Marimba Club, Martial Arts Club, Photography, Seattle Sports Fans, Sewing Club, Room Stage Tech Club and Watercolor. Upper Field Access Policy This school year, the PE teachers are using the upper playfield during both lunch recesses. This has been a difficult transition for our active soccer players. Students are going to be allowed to use the upper field until the PE classes transition outside. Once PE students start to arrive to the field the recess students will be prompted to move to the lower playground by the recess supervisor. We are going to monitor this solution for the next few weeks. Have a great week, Jen and Brett

Elementary Volunteer Coordinator's Note

Hi Families! Just a few quick reminders: - All visitors and volunteers must sign in and out in the office and obtain a visitor sticker. The sign in pages for visitors are Yellow and are located all the way at the left end of the desk when you enter the office.
- Please call the Attendance line as soon as possible at 206-252-1728 if you are going to be late or absent.
- If you child needs a bus green card (to take the bus home with a friend) that request will need to be made with a hand written note by the morning of the requested change.
- All volunteers will need to attend a brief Volunteer Orientation. I will hold them in the mornings in the upcoming weeks, please keep an eye on the bulletin for exact dates and times.
- Please don't idle you car when picking up/dropping off.
- If your child is interested in our K-8 production of Peter Pan please check out the Audition Prep Workshop information in the All-School News section below.
- Please return your first day paperwork. It is vital that we have copies of your emergency information on file. We need the white WATCH paperwork processed before you can volunteer in the building.
- I am currently working with our teachers to establish what this year's Enrichment Fees will be. For families new to our school, the Enrichment Fee is a one-time fee that covers all of the "extras" that your teacher plans for the year. This includes field trips, assemblies, artist-in-residence and other activities that "enrich" your child's experience. It is a mandatory fee, and scholarships are available. More information will be forthcoming.
Have a great week! Sharon

Hello middle school families,
I have just a few quick reminders for you on this day that feels like fall is just around the corner!

Our Nurse has 360 kiddos going to 3 different camps so any help we can give her by getting stuff in early is much appreciated.

Please join us for the Walk-n-Wheel Month Kick-Off Event, Saturday, September 28, 10 a.m. to noon, at the Salmon Bay School Playground.
This Ball ard multi-school event will put you in gear for year-round kid-powered commuting. Here's what we have planned for you:
We are especially excited about the "Bike Library" which will showcase various family, cargo, and kid bikes for families to try out. You will also be able to talk to seasoned riders about the benefits of each type of bike, so this event is ideal for families that are just beginning to think about cycling.
Ballard Bikes, the multi-school collaboration organizing this event, was formed to promote active, kid-powered transportation at our schools year-round. Find out about your school's plans for Bike/Walk to School in October and upcoming activities at this event.
Community Partners-Cascade Bicycle Club, Seattle Dept. of Transportation, Feet First, and others will be present to share their resources.
All kids must have an adult family member present and must be wearing a helmet in order to participate. This event is free and open to all students at Ballard elementary & K-8 schools. Visit http://ballardbikes.blogspot.com/ for more information.
See you on the 28th!

After-School Program Announcements
Programming Club: The parents who run the Programming Club (Greg Foltz, Hector Rovira, and Steve Andersen) would like to extend the club to middle-schoolers this year, maybe dabbling in Python. (Last year the club was open only to second through fifth graders.) In order to expand the club and accommodate middle-schoolers, Greg would like to have one or two more parents to help supervise the kids and help out with instruction. Please email Greg a t gfoltz@gmail.com if you are interested.
Robotics Club: We are also looking for parents to help run and manage the Robotics Club this year. The parent who has been managing the Robotics Club in the past is unable to do so this year but she will gladly pass on the equipment and materials to the next generation of Robotic parents. Email me at salmonbayasp@gmail.com if you are interested.
Finally, After-School Program registration packets should be ready this week, so be on the lookout for an email and hardcopies in our Volunteer Coordinators' offices.
Thanks - Mindy Terence, ASP Co-Coordinator

Looking for Roots of Empathy Family and Baby Volunteers If you have a baby between the ages of 2-4 months and are interested in becoming a Roots of Empathy Family or learning more about the program, please contact Markos Weiss at 206-252-1742 or mmweiss@seattleschools.org . Please Read Below: We are starting a new social skills program at Salmon Bay called, Roots of Empathy. I will be the instructor in both of our 5th grade classes. This program teaches children about feelings, recognizing their own feelings and understanding the feelings of others. Once every three weeks, a baby and his/her parent(s) will visit the classroom. Starting in October, we will be using this social skills curriculum in both 5th grade classes every week. Trained as a ROE Instructor, I will gather the children in the classroom around a green blanket and together they watch the baby grow. There will be 27 (ROE) classes and 9 family visits this year. During the family visits, ROE hopes for the mom/dad and baby to feel as comfortable as possible doing whatever the baby needs. As a natural part of growing and developing the baby's needs and actions may be unpredictable. The children predict and cheer when their ROE baby reaches the "developmental milestones" of the first year. "She can roll over!" "He got his first tooth!" "He can sit up!" "She can crawl!" The ROE Instructor coaches the children in observing the baby and reading the cues the baby gives as to how the baby is feeling. "Is the baby happy or sad?" "How can you tell?" We use this discussion as a lever for the children to talk about their own emotions and to understand how their classmates feel: "Do you smile when you're happy?" "How can you tell if your friend is happy or sad?" Being able to understand how other people are feeling is called empathy. The ROE Instructor also, visits the classroom before and after each Family Visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit. For more than twenty years across Canada and internationally, thousands of children are learning respect and care for one another with the lessons started through their Roots of Empathy baby. If you have a baby between the ages of 2-4 months and are interested in becoming a Roots of Empathy Family or learning more about the program, please contact Markos Weiss at 206-252-1742 or mmweiss@seattleschools.org

Thank you Ballard Market!
Did you know that Ballard Market will donate 1% of your store purchase back to the school? Just bring your Ballard Market receipts to school and put them in the box labeled "Ballard Market receipts and Box Tops" in the front lobby (you can also put Box Tops in the same box) by Anthony's new office. Some teachers have boxes by their rooms. It's that simple! In a typical year Ballard Market donates over $2000 to our school through the receipt program.
Volunteer(s) Needed
We are looking for a volunteer to tally and turn in our Ballard Market receipts and Box Tops. This job takes about 3-4 hours a month, less if you recruit some friends to help. Please contact one of the Volunteer Coordinators if you are interested.
