National Bullying Awareness Month

The month of October has been designated as National Bullying Awareness Month.  Bullying is a very serious offense and one that has the potential to lead to lasting mental and emotional disorders.  In the most extreme cases, it has lead to SUICIDE.

Below are Top 5 facts that parents, educators and students need to know:

1. Students with disabilities are much more likely to be bullied than their non disabled peers- One study showed that 60% of students with disabilities report being bullied regularly compared to the 25% of all students.

2. Bullying affects a student's ability to learn- Leads to: school avoidance, higher rates of absenteeism, decrease in grades, inability to concentrate, loss of interest in academic success, and an increase in drop out rates.

3. Bullying based on a student's disability may be considered harassment.

4. Disability harassment is a civil rights issue- On August 20, 2013, the Education Department's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services issued guidance to educators and stakeholders on on the matter of bullying students with disabilities.  It ensured that students with disabilities continued to receive free appropriate public educations under the IDEA.

5. Bystanders have power- More than 50% of bullying situations stop when a peer intervenes.

3.An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.

4. Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults.

Therapeutic Youth Group's Schedule!

Therapeutic groups allow for an opportunity for youth to engage with their peers to develop life and social skills through the use of discussion and skill developing activities.

This month's group will focus on the topic BULLYING.  Many of our youth are affected by bullying on a daily basis. This group will provide an opportunity for a rich dialogue and various problem solving activities directed at raising awareness and decreasing occurrences.
