Tips for Transitioning your Adolescent with Autism into Adulthood!!

We are just 5 months away from high school graduation!  Have you begun the transition process for your adolescent with Autism who will be transitioning to adulthood?  If not, then allow us to provide you with some helpful transition tips.

There are a couple of areas to consider when making decisions.  These include: where will he/she live, will they seek employment, vocational programs, or post-secondary educational opportunties, and will you as a parent be seeking guardianship?  The most important place to start when making these decisions is with your child.  Get to know their hopes, dreams, and desires when creating a transition plan.

If a Day Program, Vocational Program, or Rehabilitation Program is an option that you and your child wish to explore, then we encourage that you start the process this month.  Begin my identifying programs within your area that meets your criteria. It is important to note that many programs have a waiting list, so it is crucial to start the process of getting on the waiting list as soon as possible.

This process can produce feelings of being overwhelmed for both you and your child.  Remember, you do not need to go through this alone!  Brighter, Stronger Foundation's Adult Life Planners are here to help you!  Call today to discuss Adult Life Planning.  In addition, you can contact your Service Coordinator for assistance.
Brighter, Stronger Foundation's Adult Day Program Update!!
