OCTOBER 2015

For Josh Cassada, '95, Homecoming
Proves Truly Special

Josh Cassada, '95, one of NASA's eight newest astronauts and who is slated to fly to the International Space Station within the next few years, took part in Albion's Homecoming weekend festivities. The activities included a morning lecture to first-year physics students and a pair of animated talks at the Community School—first to fifth and sixth graders, then another to seventh and eighth graders.

For Cassada, returning to Albion during Homecoming weekend was a step back in time. After Friday's full day of meetings and presentations, he spent much of Saturday with friends and acquaintances from the science departments, remembering the days when nothing was impossible.

Share Your Albion Story

What is a referral? It's an honor. It's a compliment. It's a gift. You know what a life-altering experience being a Briton is. We spend time learning how to think with the help of our professors, peers, and mentors. We work in and out of offices to help ourselves and others grow. We play on and off the field to develop our school and ourselves. We have made a lot of decisions while we're here, but perhaps the most important decision we made was to attend Albion College.

You have the incredible power to help others make the life-changing decision you did. The success of last year's efforts in the referral program makes me optimistic that you will share this information with high school students and encourage them to apply and attend Albion. Be sure to share that they would receive a $1,000 scholarship each year if you refer them and then attend Albion. All you have to do is share your Albion story with a high school student and fill out a referral form. Give a high school student this honor, compliment, and gift today.

Thank you!

Ceramics Class Provides Trip Back to
Industrial Revolution

There is more to Lynne Chytilo's honors ceramics class than meets the eye.

"I don't think anywhere in the world is there a class like this," said the Albion College art professor who specializes in ceramics and sculpture. And she may only be partially kidding.

The class, formally known as "Ceramics and the Industrial Revolution" and part of the College's Great Issues curriculum in the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program, is more than just making items from clay. Chytilo, who has offered the class only one other time (in Spring 2012), is using it as a pathway to learn about so much more.
