Tunnicliff Fellow David Utrata, ’15, Studies Sustainability in South Africa

This past fall, the Kim Tunnicliff Endowment supported its first fellow, David Utrata, ’15. The member of the Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Service and the Center for Sustainability and the Environment recently completed a semester in Stellenbosch, South Africa, through the CIEE Stellenbosch Sustainability and Community program.

“I would have really enjoyed talking with Kim Tunnicliff and sharing a lot of perspectives about international travel, international education, and being a global citizen,” Utrata said. “I appreciated the scholarship being in his name, based on who he was.”

Albion Enrolls First Class of
Build Albion Fellows

Albion College is pleased to introduce its first class of Build Albion Fellows, a group of seven students residing in the local school district who will receive four-year tuition, room and board from the College, and who will bring to the campus a diverse and exciting array of passions and career interests.

After being accepted for admission to Albion College and demonstrating high financial need based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the students—all of whom have attended Albion Public Schools for at least three years (grades 6-8)—expressed interest in the Fellows program, which was first announced in November 2014 and includes a community service requirement aimed at “building” the community of Albion.

The Bigger Read: A Powerful Partnership Makes Magic

"It is almost impossible for me to imagine what this course would have looked like without the community," says Jess Roberts about English 314, an upper-level Albion College class offered for the first time last fall, and perhaps better known by its rather catchy name, Practical Persuasion.

The associate professor utilized a budding local initiative as an extended, hands-on classroom for her new professional writing course, and the end result is one of Albion's most ambitious college/community joint projects, one that will make an impact throughout 2015.

Wanting her students to experience the demands and results of a real-world writing project, Roberts hit upon The Big Read, a nationally competitive community-reading grant program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Albion Makes Princeton Review ‘Green Colleges’ List for 2015

Just a few days before Earth Day, Albion College was named to The Princeton Review Guide to 353 Green Colleges for 2015. An environmental studies academic requirement, showers for cyclists, locally-grown produce in the dining hall, and low-energy lighting were among many campus-wide initiatives that placed Albion on the list.

GLCA Grant to Provide Albion an Environmental Dashboard

Albion College—in partnership with Antioch College, DePauw University, Hope College, and Oberlin College—has been awarded a grant from the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) as part of its “Expanding Collaboration Initiative,” funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The project to be supported by the grant is called “Environmental Dashboard Implementation in Multiple GLCA Colleges to Foster Collaboration across Campuses.” It includes collaborative initiatives that seek to educate populations – on college campuses, in public school systems, and in local communities – about how changing practices can result in a more vibrant and sustained future for humanity.
