Briton Duo Launch Yogurt Business

For Joseph Verbeke, '01, and Emily Dobbins-Verbeke, '03, opening a new frozen yogurt shop in Troy, Mich., has been a learning experience. It's been a family experience as well.

The Verbekes opened up a Zoyo Neighborhood Yogurt store in April out of desire to offer the community a fun (and tasty) place to gather. Emily's father, Bill Dobbins, '74, brought up the idea of opening a franchise to the couple.

"His wealth of knowledge about business development and business management has helped us at every step along the way," Emily says.

The rest of Joe and Emily's families helped with almost every part of the business -- from social media marketing consultation to graphic design, material handling, and logistics.

"Of course my son, and my niece and nephew, are willing taste-testers of almost any flavor or topping," Emily says, "although they do have their favorites."

Emily says the couple's experience at Albion -- problem solving, research, learning new things -- has been valuable in starting their new venture.

"Our start has kept us focused on working hard on the business as a whole every single day," she says.

The Verbeke's Zoyo shop is located at 3067 Rochester Road in Troy.

Honors Students Explore the
Western Front

Place is powerful. The experience of battlefields, cemeteries, monuments, and museums provided a profound field trip for a group of students in history professor Chris Hagerman’s class "We Are Making a World: Trauma and Cultural Change on the Western Front, 1914-18." The class, offered through Albion’s Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program, traveled in May to France and Belgium, where they explored the very sites they had studied on campus using historical maps, diaries, letters, literary memoirs, poetry, paintings, photography and film.
