Alumni-to-Alumni Connection Delivers
T-shirts to Classroom
Jennifer Cristante Buskey, '04, kindergarten teacher at Albemarle Road Elementary School in Charlotte, N.C., was looking to represent her alma mater during the school's college T-shirt day.
"I wanted students to wear T-shirts from my own college experience," she says, "and for them to know that colleges are all over and they all have different opportunities for them."
But there was the small issue of how to get T-shirts for all of the children in her kindergarten class. Elinor Marsh, Albion's executive director of alumni engagement, put Buskey in touch with Josh Fales, '06, founder and president of CreateMyTee. Fales loved the idea of a school promoting college opportunities, and gladly donated T-shirts for Buskey's entire class.
"I have had more than my fair share of support from Albion alumni, so finding a way to 'pay it forward' is important," Fales says. "It was a great opportunity to support an Albion alumna and a worthy cause. I was raised in a family of educators, so I know firsthand the difficulties that teachers face on a daily basis."
"My students were so excited to receive such a wonderful gift," Buskey says. "They feel so special wearing them around the school, because everyone compliments how wonderful they all look!"
Julian Bond to Keynote MLK Convocation
Julian Bond, NAACP chairman emeritus and associate of Martin Luther King, Jr., will be the featured speaker for the 2014 MLK Convocation and Community Celebration Thursday, January 30. The program, which will focus on "The Dream: The Journey So Far and the Challenge Ahead," begins at 7 p.m. in Albion College's Goodrich Chapel. It is free and open to the public.
Bond's Albion visit, co-sponsored by the Albion Branch of the NAACP, is due in part to a relationship with history professor Wes Dick. "We are both historians and passionately interested in the history of the 1960s, and we share a commitment to activism and to social justice," Dick stated.
