No Guilt allowed!
Experts say it's important for kids to realize you have a life aside from being "mom" or "dad." Of course you go on a family vacation to be together but there's nothing wrong with carving out a little "me" or "us" time too.
Here are some ways to make that happen:
INVITE GRANDMA AND GRANDPA - just make sure they're up for a little babysitting duty and don't expect them to babysit all the time.
JOIN FORCES with another family whose kids are similar ages. You can trade off babysitting chores so that everyone gets at least an afternoon or evening of adult time.
OPT FOR A CONDO RENTAL - and invite your favorite niece, nephew or teenaged babysitter to join you. Especially with babies and toddlers, it's always good to have an extra set of hands on vacation.
OPT FOR A SUITE HOTEL or a condo rental so that you can put the kids to bed and enjoy some adult time in another room. Order take out and open a bottle of wine!
CHOOSE A HOTEL that offers some complimentary child care: The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort offers free child care while you visit the hotel spa or have dinner at one of the hotel restaurants; Four Seasons resorts tout complimentary kids' activities. Kids programs are also part of the deal at all inclusive resorts.
CHOOSE A CRUISE that offers organized programs for your age children. Some, including Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, now offer child care for babies at an extra charge. Many kids' clubs operate on port days so that you can go off knowing your child is happily and safely entertained if she is too young or he is not interested in what you would like to do.
ASK AT THE RESORT for reputable babysitters. Often, those who work in nurseries at snow resorts will babysit; so will long time staff at hotels. You might feel more comfortable if you stay within the resort to have dinner, after the kids are in bed.
