January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month

Our annual Guide to Fun in the Snow is published. Plan your winter trip now

Dear Family Travelers:

Now's your chance!  If you promised yourself you'd try something new in 2016, this is it!  Get out and play in the snow!

January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month and whether you want to downhill or cross country ski, snowshoe or snowboard, there are opportunities across the country for adults and kids alike.

Newcomers can win prizes by entering the #firstdayfaces social media campaign. Anyone who helps a beginner sign up for lessons from a pro also can win prizes by entering the Bring a Friend Challenge. Visit Learn to Ski and Snowboard's website  and you won't have to spend a bundle or hit the biggest, fanciest resort around either.

Check out our FUN IN THE SNOW section to see what resorts are offering families this winter. If your kids are in 3rd through 6th grades, see which states offer "passports" for free lift tickets and discounted lesson packages.

More than 100 locations across the country are also offering Winter Trails events with educational workshops, equipment demos and a variety of fun activities to introduce families to snowshoeing and cross country skiing.

The majority of the Vermont Ski Areas Association (VSAA) member resorts are offering a $49 beginner lesson during the month of January, excluding Holiday periods including rental, lesson and access to beginner terrain. The beginner package includes equipment rental as well as a lesson with a professional instructor (lesson duration varies by resort) and access to the beginner terrain:  Ski New Hampshire member resorts have a $39 beginner lesson/lift deal while Nordic areas are touting a $19 beginner lesson/lift/rentals package.
