What's for dinner on your family vacation?

Dear Family Travelers:

You and your family are on vacation. The question: what's for dinner?

For some vacationing families, that involves a negotiation to decide what kind of food.  For others, it's a chance to sample unfamiliar and local eats. Then there are those of us who like nothing more than having the chance to cook together at a rental condo or house.

Wherever you go and whatever your family's vacation style, food is a great way to experience the local culture:
  • Sample Orlando's Changing Restaurant Scene During Magical Dining Month through September with many restaurants offering prix fixe dinners for $33. (Share with your junior foodie!  See when such programs are offered in the city you plan to visit.
  • Venture out of Manhattan to explore the delicious and diverse eats in NYC's other boroughs. Share your experiences via social media with hashtag #seeyourcity. And if you have an American Express Card, you are eligible to earn a one-time $10 credit if you spend $50 at a participating restaurant. Enroll at AmericanExpress.com/SeeYourCityEats
  • Fall is the ideal time to visit a farmer's market on vacation and chat up the farmers about what is in season. They may even have a recipe to offer. If you are staying in a rental house or condo for a long weekend, encourage the kids to plan a meal based on what's in season now.  You'll also find local jams, freshly baked breads and more.
  • Ask locals-including those working at your hotel-where they like to take their kids to eat and grocery shop.  Hopefully, they'll steer you off the tourist track.
  • If you are staying somewhere with a kitchen, opt for local brands of chips, salsa, cookies, etc.
  • Eat ethnic! Kids will always find something they like and you won't have to worry about them being too noisy in an ethnic restaurant.
  • Head to a festival, even for the day near your home. There are festivals all fall all around the country and food is always a big part of the celebration.
