Tips for a Special Valentines Day Getaway

Dear Family Travelers:

Is grandma due for a visit?  Maybe the kids are angling for a sleepover at their best friends' houses.

Let go of the guilt and get away for a weekend-or even a night. Experts say it's important for kids to realize you have a life aside from being "mom" or "dad."

If you can't get away this month, give your significant other an I OWE YOU with your Valentine's Day card.

Here are some ideas guaranteed to please:

FOR THE SPA LOVER:  The Omni La Costa resort in Carlsbad CA is famous for its Bellini's (sparkling wine and peach, blood orange or raspberry puree) and healthy eats.  (I can vouch for the chicken lettuce wraps.)  After co-chairing the TMS Family Travel conference here in November, I was finally able to relax and there can't be a better spot.  This is, after all, considered a top wellness resort in the country with a fitness center, expansive spa with its own pool as well as café, yoga center, golf and tennis.

FOR THE CITY LOVER:   Spend the night in your favorite city and explore like you did before kids were part of the equation.  You'll find good deals on winter weekends when the business travelers have left. Check out the website of your favorite city or hotel brand to see what they're offering like in Chicago or Philadelphia.  The Conrad New York has a Romance Retreat Package  complete with Champaign, flowers, chocolate covered strawberries and breakfast in bed.  It's a great base to explore Lower Manhattan.

FOR THE OUTDOORS LOVER- Go have some fun in the snow.  So what if you don't like to ski.  Go snowmobiling, for a dog sled ride or snowshoeing. The Woodstock Inn & Resort in Woodstock, VT has a new Tubbs  Snowshoe Adventure Center and a new Romance package complete with breakfast in bed, horse drawn sleigh ride and guided snowshoe trek. It's really easy and fun to snowshoe.  You will find plenty of Fun in the Snow options at www.ski.com.

FOR SUN WORSHIPPERS-Shop for a flight-hotel deal to get away from winter for a few days.  Stay somewhere you wouldn't with the kids- a quaint B&B or if the budget allows, a tony hotel.  If you go to Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, you won't even need a passport.

FOR THE FOODIE AND MUSIC LOVER: Go to the  Montreal en Lumiere festival the second half of February, one of the largest winter festivals in the world with music and a focus on food. The Montreal Hotel Association has packages.

The only hard part-deciding where to go!
