Moms deserve a break too!
Our annual Summer Vacation Section is published!

Dear family travelers:

Too often, family vacations are no vacations for moms, especially when young kids are part of the equation. In fact, moms whisper around the pool, their eyes trained on their toddlers, they should have saved the money and stayed home.

On vacation, we're still the Organizers in Chief.  We, still mediate  sibling squabbles, plan activities in unfamiliar environs, keep kids safe, arrange to feed everyone,  find missing sneakers and treat minor illnesses and injuries - all that and scout out a washing machine, too. (Whenever possible, I go for a condo with a washer or a wash-and-fold place.)

Here's how to make sure mom gets a much deserved vacation break-dad too!

Invite grandparents along..  Just make sure if you are planning a multigenerational trip, you discuss beforehand exactly who is paying for what-and how willing grandma and grandpa are to babysit!

Join forces with another family. Not only can you share costs for that vacation condo or cottage and food but you can share child care chores and the kids have built-in friends. This is an especially good bet for single parents.

Opt for a vacation rentalso you have more space and bring along your favorite sitter if your kids are young. Let her (or him) chase those preschoolers down the beach and entertain them while you finish dinner!

If the kids are old enough, let them each plan a day of the itinerary and a meal.  They can cook and clean up too!

Seek out resorts or cruise lines with reputable kids' programs (many are being offered complimentary these days) and use the time while the kids are there to book a spa treatment,  play golf or tennis or simply laze by the pool.  Just make sure the programs are available for your age kids.

Negotiate "just me" time with your significant other-you get an hour to sleep in while they get the kids breakfast; You watch the kids at the beach while they play golf.

Most important, let go of the guilt! You deserve a vacation!

Happy Mother's Day!
