From the Editor
Our major headline continues to be the World interRAI Conference. There has been an excellent response to the call for papers, with submissions far exceeding session availability. We expect a large gathering! Read below for more information on the pre-conference workshop. Remember to invite colleagues from your country! This is our last newsletter for 2015. It has been a productive year for interRAI. Next year promises even greater achievements. To all of our interRAI friends, best wishes for the holiday season and new year!

interRAI Pediatric Home Care Assessment Update
An article introducing the PEDS HC has just been published in Health Services Insights, an open access journal. The article, The interRAI Pediatric Home Care (PEDS HC) assessment: Evaluating the long-term community-based service and support needs of children facing special health care challenges, describes the PEDS development process, discusses the Suite, indicates the general content of the instrument, discusses scales developed from the items, and reports on published research using the instrument. Many thanks to members of the ISD, especially our Canadian colleagues, for their help in moving this instrument along. We now have a published instrument and manual, as well as an introductory article in a peer-reviewed journal. Later this month, a paper presenting a case-mix model (RUG-like) for long-term pediatric home care will be submitted either to Health Services Insights or BMC Health Services Research. This case-mix model, The Pediatric Expenditures Classification Model (PECM), has just over 20 groups and explains 40 percent of the variance in annual public home care expenditures in the development sample of over 2,500 children/youth. Thanks to Mary James and Brant Fries for their assistance with this article.

Now Available: interRAI BMHS
The interRAI Brief Mental Health Screener (BMHS) Assessment Forms and User's Manual: A Screening Level Assessment for Use by Police Officers and Other Front-line Service Providers is now available. The BMHS complements the interRAI Mental Health (MH) Assessment System for In-Patient Psychiatry, the interRAI Community Mental Health (CMH) Assessment System, and the interRAI Emergency Screener for Psychiatry (ESP).
The interRAI BMHS was developed to assist front-line police officers and community service providers to identify and respond to persons with mental health concerns. It is designed as a brief screener only, with two versions of the form. The interRAI BMHS-Police is intended for use by front-line police officers and the interRAI BMHS-General is designed for use by community organizations (for example, neighborhood outreach programs, emergency medical services).

Support for interRAI Scholarships
interRAI member, Dr. Jacob Gindin, has penned "On Both Sides of the Midline", a book that depicts the turbulence, return to normalcy and calmness of life after illness. Part of the book's income will support interRAI scholarships. The scholarships will be announced at the biannual interRAI Global Health Policy Meeting. The book was launched at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 15, 2015. Contact Dr. Gindin for further information. |
