Welcome to 2013!

The Emerging Professionals group (designers with five years or less professional experience) is kicking off the New Year with a wonderful networking/educational evening hosted by John Brooks (see below for more info).  However, no one is excluded.  If you are a more seasoned designer and want to attend, please join in!

We are excited that Kravet is opening their doors to us and hosting our chapter meeting on January 17, 2013.  This is a very special, informative evening with guest speaker, Mike Orr.  We are also introducing a student registration rate for this event to encourage student attendance.

Numerous committees are getting into full swing and there is still time to make a resolution to get involved with your chapter!  Email me if you want help finding a niche, president@asidaznorth.org.

Happy New Year!

Open Board Position - Membership Director
Opportunity Forms Due 1/4/13!

Gretchen Palmer, Allied ASID, moved into the President Elect position, leaving the position of Membership Director open.  Gretchen has since worn both hats as she lays the foundation for programs for 2013.  We are now looking for a new Membership Director to join our Board of Directors.

We are looking for someone with creative ideas who enjoys a collaborative working atmosphere.  Additionally, to come onto our Board requires previous experience on a committee, either a very active committee member position or preferably as a Committee Chair.

Membership Director requirements include mandatory monthly board meetings, mandatory attendance at membership meetings, able to manage budgets and committees.

Responsibilities include program planning and development, oversight of the Programs Committee, Ambassadors Committee, Emerging Professionals Committee, and Membership.

This position will run through September 2014-it is a two-year position that just began in October 2012.  Don't be scared off!  Our Board is supportive and will help you, Gretchen will present to provide guidance, and there will be Leadership Training in Los Angeles in June.

If interested, please contact Cindy Lewton, ASID, President at president@asidaznorth.org.  You will receive a leadership opportunity form.  We would like all opportunity forms returned by email to president@asidaznorth.org by January 4, 2013.
Chapter Elections Are Once Again Here!

January is the time for filling open positions on the board of directors for our chapter. The slate has been posted with National and on our own chapter web site.

The Process:
Dec. 1 - Slate presented to National
Jan. 5  - Ballots will be emailed to all current members
Jan. 15 - Final date that votes can be received
Feb. 12 - Election results are announced
Oct. 1 - New officers begin their term

We have yet another slate of qualified candidates! Some are new faces to the board and some are familiar faces who have served the chapter in other capacities. Each candidate brings strength to our chapter.

Board positions are two-year terms and are on a rotational basis.  Continuing positions for 2013-2014 are the current President Elect, the Membership Director and Director at Large.

The open two-year positions that will take office for 2013-2014 are:
President Elect
Communications Director
Financial Director
Professional Development Director

Every vote counts and your input is very valuable to the continued success of our chapter.

Each member in good standing as of October 1, 2012 will receive an email with instructions on how to vote electronically.

Read the candidates' bios and statements.
There's Still Time
Step Up for Professional Development Day!

Become part of the team by sharing expertise, tips and tricks of the trade at our Professional Development Day to be held on April 18, 2013.  We want to showcase our talented members in this full day of workshops to help improve our businesses and/or practices.

We need designers and industry partners that are willing to share successes with us to complete the Call for Presenters form and return it as soon as possible.  The absolute cut off date is January 8th.  If you are not sure about your topic, fill out the form and send it in for feedback.  The committee is making every effort to prepare a meaningful day of training with a wide variety of topics and presentations.  Selected presenters will be notified by the end of January.

We need YOU to make this day a success.  Working together as a design community, supporting and learning from each other, establishes a sound future for our industry in Arizona.  So please, consider being a part of this day.

ASID no longer provides STEP courses for designers to prepare for the NCIDQ exam.  There are trainers that are working with ASID and NCIDQ to provide that same training but at the expense of the designer.
If we have 8-10 people in our area that want this training, we can host it locally.  The three day session is held over a weekend and includes 23 hours of directed training.  ASID AZ North is not affiliated with the trainers or the event but will work to help pull a group together and get you in touch with the trainers.  The spring exam is April 5th and 6th, 2013.  If you are interested in more information, please send an email to Jewell Blair, Allied ASID at professionaldev@asidaznorth.org.

Student Design Charette - February 9th

The word, "Charette" refers to any collaborative session in which groups of designers draft a solution to a design problem.  The term is thought to originate from the Ecoles des Beaux Art in Paris in the 19th Century.  Our Student Design Charette is structured to reflect the elements of the NCIDQ exam, in which the event is a full day of collaborative design work.  Students are grouped in a mixture of talent and years of education in each group.  First year students gain as much from the competition as those that are in their final year. Each group will have an experienced designer to serve as a mentor throughout the day.

Participants need to bring their drafting tools, markers, and pencils.  Drafting paper, card stock, foam core, and adhesives will be provided for elevations and renderings.  Of course, if you have favorite materials, bring them along!  Following group presentations, a panel of designers and instructors will determine the winners of the competition.  The winners will be announced at the Student Career Day held on April 6, 2013.

The competition is open to student members of ASID only.  Verification of membership will be done through registration prior to the event.  Students may not join ASID the day of the competition.

This year's competition will be held at Glendale Community College.  A light breakfast is served before competition commences.  Lunch will be provided.  Registration for students and mentors will be available soon.
