| PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE |
Welcome to 2013! The Emerging Professionals group (designers with five years or less professional experience) is kicking off the New Year with a wonderful networking/educational evening hosted by John Brooks (see below for more info). However, no one is excluded. If you are a more seasoned designer and want to attend, please join in! We are excited that Kravet is opening their doors to us and hosting our chapter meeting on January 17, 2013. This is a very special, informative evening with guest speaker, Mike Orr. We are also introducing a student registration rate for this event to encourage student attendance. Numerous committees are getting into full swing and there is still time to make a resolution to get involved with your chapter! Email me if you want help finding a niche, president@asidaznorth.org. Happy New Year! Cindy Lewton, ASID President, Arizona North Chapter

NCIDQ ExamASID no longer provides STEP courses for designers to prepare for the NCIDQ exam. There are trainers that are working with ASID and NCIDQ to provide that same training but at the expense of the designer. If we have 8-10 people in our area that want this training, we can host it locally. The three day session is held over a weekend and includes 23 hours of directed training. ASID AZ North is not affiliated with the trainers or the event but will work to help pull a group together and get you in touch with the trainers. The spring exam is April 5th and 6th, 2013. If you are interested in more information, please send an email to Jewell Blair, Allied ASID at professionaldev@asidaznorth.org.

Student Design Charette - February 9th
The word, "Charette" refers to any collaborative session in which groups of designers draft a solution to a design problem. The term is thought to originate from the Ecoles des Beaux Art in Paris in the 19th Century. Our Student Design Charette is structured to reflect the elements of the NCIDQ exam, in which the event is a full day of collaborative design work. Students are grouped in a mixture of talent and years of education in each group. First year students gain as much from the competition as those that are in their final year. Each group will have an experienced designer to serve as a mentor throughout the day.
Participants need to bring their drafting tools, markers, and pencils. Drafting paper, card stock, foam core, and adhesives will be provided for elevations and renderings. Of course, if you have favorite materials, bring them along! Following group presentations, a panel of designers and instructors will determine the winners of the competition. The winners will be announced at the Student Career Day held on April 6, 2013.
The competition is open to student members of ASID only. Verification of membership will be done through registration prior to the event. Students may not join ASID the day of the competition.
This year's competition will be held at Glendale Community College. A light breakfast is served before competition commences. Lunch will be provided. Registration for students and mentors will be available soon.
