Dean's Update: Libraries' Energies Warm a Cold Start of the Year

Once again, the Libraries became a hot spot of activity this past month as students returned from the holiday break. They spent focused hours among library carrels, tables, and group rooms to read, reflect and engage in discovering new ideas, writing papers and completing projects. When the University cancelled normal business for nearly two days due to the storm on January 21st, the Libraries kept the W. W. Hagerty Library open, thanks to a few of its hearty staff and security officers. Through that night and the next day, essential staff added 16 hours of access to this central learning environment. Over 1,800 visitors took advantage of having the space open, conducting nearly 300 circulation transactions. Working from home, librarians continued to provide assistance through the online chat service, where they answered questions and helped to guide research strategies

AUTHORS OF BOOKS PUBLISHED IN 2013 TO BE RECOGNIZED AT ANNUAL AUTHORS EVENT
On Tuesday, March 11, 2014 the work of Drexel faculty and staff who authored or edited books in 2013 will be featured at Celebrating Drexel Authors. The event will be held in the Paul Peck Alumni Center from 4 - 6 PM and all members of the campus community will be invited. In 2013, 47 Drexel faculty were recognized at the inaugural event, which drew over 100 attendees.

DREXEL WELCOMES LIBRARIANS IN PHILADELPHIA FOR THE ALA CONFERENCE
The American Library Association (ALA) held its midwinter conference in Philadelphia in late January 2014, bringing over 12,000 librarians to the convention center for workshops, exhibits and events. Drexel's libraries played host to six events during the week, welcoming professionals from across the country to the campus for meetings, classes and workshops.

MANAGING LIBRARY RESOURCES: Q&A WITH NOELLE EGAN, RESOURCES & ACQUISITIONS LIBRARIAN
Last year alone over 2 million items were downloaded from the Libraries' website. Curious about this massive quantity of downloads and how they are supported, I sat down with Noelle Egan, our eResources and Acquisitions librarian. Noelle manages eResources and acquisitions at the Libraries, working with many different departments to ensure access to wide array of electronic resources available through drexel.edu/library.
