Dean's Update: Reflections on 2013

Libraries have a mission to preserve history and they extend that to the organization itself in preparing the iconic annual report.   However, unlike the many standardized rules applied to preserving, cataloging and ensuring access to the artifacts of cultural, scholarly, and organizational activities, there is no common playbook for creating a library annual report. Some are lavish books themselves, commemorating collections with gorgeous images and descriptions of unique acquisitions while others are used to thank people who reaffirm the library's value with fiscal or advocacy support. And yet others simply provide the record of important activities, with reported statistics of use, summaries of expenditures and highlights of personnel changes.

LIBRARY INSTRUCTION IN EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE

Evidence-based practice has emerged as the new paradigm in the practice of medicine, nursing, public health and other health care disciplines. In a shift from traditional decision making that relied on the unsystematic experiences of clinicians combined with their medical intuition, evidence-based practice employs the best available scientific evidence to make decisions about the care of individual patients and patient populations.

REFLECTIONS ON A CAREER AT THE LIBRARIES:

Q & A WITH PEGGY DOMINY

It's not often that I find myself walking past the office of Peggy Dominy, liaison librarian for science and math, but when I do it is usually full - of students, of quilts, of resources and books, and maybe a few turtle trinkets as well. In December, will retire from the Libraries 18 years and I had the chance to sit down and ask her a few questions before her departure.
