Dean's Update: A Physical Destination?

The library as a physical destination has been on my mind for some time. We can all see the challenges to the traditional reasons for maintaining a library facility. A big place to house books seems intuitively less necessary as sources of information are continually easier to access through tablets and mobile phones. A set of quiet rooms with tables and chairs for students to sit and read begins to look outdated as 'digital natives' stop and meet friends anywhere while on their way to class or the gym, using their headphones to filter unwelcome sounds. They find electronic resources through various devices and sort competing stimulations for texting, viewing, watching and finding. Precious square footage designed for shelving books once illustrated the value of the library, but is now eyed for collaborative spaces where librarians and educational partners can enhance learning behaviors that are only started through reading a book. And yet, our library continues to be heavily visited and seriously utilized for gaining new knowledge. More >>>

CAPTURING THE STORIES OF OUR ALUMNI: Q&A WITH OUR UNIVERSITY ARCHIVIST

MANAGER, DISCOVER SYSTEMS SPENCER LAMM JOINS LIBRARIES STAFF

NEW STUDY ROOM AT W. W. HAGERTY LIBRARY DEDICATED TO LISABETH HOLLOWAY, '50

DUCOM STUDENTS WIN 'MEMMYS,' CONTEST BENEFIT LIBRARIES

Capturing and preserving its own history is essential to any organization's survival; at Drexel such is the responsibility of Rob Sieczkiewicz, our University Archivist. His team of three staff collects, catalogs and makes available the original materials that tell Drexel's story - and those collections are growing.

On Monday, July 15, 2013, Spencer Lamm joined the staff of the Libraries as manager, discovery systems. He previously worked as the digital initiatives librarian at Swarthmore College where his responsibilities included managing the infrastructure systems and user-facing applications of the Tri-College Library Consortium.

On Friday, July 12, 2013 the Libraries unveiled a new study room, dedicated to the late Lisabeth Holloway, a Drexel library school graduate. Mrs. Holloway's family and several friends were present, including her husband George, also from the class of 1950, and two sons, Jim and George.

Students from the Drexel University College of Medicine showcased their creativity and won first place in the University of South Carolina School of Medicine's Memmy awards, a student-produced video contest. The winning video earned Drexel's Libraries a $2,500 donation.
