Bible Study Leads to Baptisms
Studying Genesis at Genesis

In September 2012, a Bible study was started at the Genesis home with the help of Friendship Families Steve Heuston and Mike Fischetti.

Scott Leonard, senior childcare worker, has also been involved and connects regularly with the guys on Thursday evenings to play a game or just hang out.

He reports, "The boys have been very receptive to attending the Bible study. During my three years at Advent, it is the first time I've seen the guys this interested in a Bible study. It's cool because...read more

Designer Drugs

There are two designer drugs that are becoming well known with adolescents: 1) a synthetic cannabis (marijuana), typically called Spice or K-2, or generically called herbal incense; and 2) bath salts.

One of the reasons these substances are popular with teens is that their presence is not picked up with a random drug test or by drug-sniffing dogs. Also, they are readily available in smoke shops, which are legitimately run storefronts. These products are labeled "not for human consumption," thereby helping the sellers get around FDA issues.

However, this creates another problem because there are no...read more

Mom Regains Custody of Kids

Advent's The Refuge is a sanctuary for women who are in transition and struggling to get their lives back together. Director Tammy Greer interviewed Phi-Phi, a mom who has recently regained custody of her children while at The  Refuge.

Tammy: What circumstances brought you to The Refuge?

Phi-Phi: I was getting ready to graduate from my outpatient drug and alcohol program (Blossoms) and was nearing the end of the six-month limit at my THU (Transitional Housing Unit) where I was residing. I needed to find a place because my time was running out and one of the counselors referred me to The Refuge. I was doing very well in my court ordered services and was also about to reunify with my children...read more

Christmas Wonderland

Many smiles were seen on the faces of our kids as Santa arrived at the group homes on December 19 loaded with presents.

Santa's first stop was the Gateway home, where the guys were overwhelmed as gifts were passed out to each one. They were surprised to receive so many things they'd asked for-clothes, hats, shoes, electronic games and gift cards.

After opening presents, lunch was brought in from La Costa, their favorite restaurant in Morgan Hill, and after stuffing themselves they spent the afternoon playing games.

Santa was soon on his way to the Summit home, where the...read more

Step Up! Closer Connections Liaison

A new position is in place at Advent-Closer Connections School Liaison-the brainchild of CEO Mark Miller as he struggled to come up with a constructive way to encourage students to receive treatment and be successful in school.

This new approach has also provided an answer to many of the issues encountered in offering drug and alcohol treatment to the students.

Advent is delighted to have Jodie Wylie on board again, as she brings a wealth of experience to this post. She began her career...read more
