Preparing for Retirement
The sooner you get started, the easier the retirement process will be. Here are three steps you can take right now:
  1. Visit the retirement readiness website at members.ctpf.org. This site features tools to help you prepare for retirement, including a downloadable retirement application and helpful checklists.
  2. Organize your required documentation and request any missing vital records. The application, available here, includes a list of required documentation.
  3. Register your personal e-mail with CTPF. Your CPS e-mail address will terminate when you retire so it's important to share your personal e-mail to stay in touch. Click here to register.
RECIPROCITYRetirement Considerations
Do You have Service Credit in Another Illinois Public Pension System?

The Illinois Retirement Systems Reciprocal Act (Reciprocal Act) gives retiring Illinois public employees the option to combine service credit earned in all Illinois public retirement systems (except local police and fire pension funds).

The Chicago Teachers' Pension Fund (CTPF) is one of the 13 Illinois public retirement systems covered by the Reciprocal Act.

If you elect to retire under the provisions of the Reciprocal Act, your service from all covered systems is combined upon retirement. The total combined service credit is then used to determine your eligibility for pension benefits from each system and the amount of those benefits.

Reciprocity is not mandatory. If you choose to use the provisions of the Reciprocal Act, the systems exchange information to determine your pension benefits.

For an overview of retirement under the provisions of the Reciprocal Act, please consult CTPF's Reciprocal Retirement information Sheet.
