It's time for the Skagit Valley Giant Pumpkin Festival! What better way to enjoy fall with the whole family than to come to the Nursery to witness the arrival of 1500 pound monster pumpkins. This Festival has become a Valley tradition and it's just as fun for the staff. As if the giant pumpkins aren't entertaining enough, we'll have the ponies, face painters, toad races, carnival games and pumpkin trivial pursuit. The "Bat Lady", Kathleen Bander is back too with her ever popular class on native bats. And with our new parking area, we now hold as many cars as a super ferry!

Be sure to check out September's classes. Fall is a great time to plant and there are classes on soil care, using mulch, planting in the fall, and choosing great fall perennials.

So, come visit the Nursery and enjoy the changing season; I know Fall is my favorite season with the beautiful leaf color and cooler weather. And, you don't have to water so much!

AUTUMN PLANTING

We encourage all our customers to plant in the Fall. Trends have moved away from this recommendation, but trees, shrubs or hardy perennials planted from Autumn to early Winter will put on some root growth and settle in before it begins to put on top growth in the Spring. In fact, roots will continue to grow throughout the winter whenever the temperatures are above 42 degrees. Fall planting gives plants a head start on growth and plants will need less water during the following dry, summer season.

FALL BULBS ARE IN!

A colorful Spring garden planted in tulips and daffodils requires planning and planting in October and November. Our Spring flowering bulbs are now being stocked in the Garden Store. Information is on the boxes about early, mid-season and late flowering varieties that will make it possible to extend the season from late March to May. We have many sought-after varieties to choose from, so don't hesitate to come in for the best selection.
