 The High Points of 2015

It was a great year at Hogar de Vida because the Lord prospered us. With the help of our maintenance department, outside volunteers and visiting teams there were several significant work projects completed this year:
  • Last year 37 children came in, 17 returned to their families, 11 went to their heart families in adoption, and 4 were placed in another institution.
  • Our Nursing Department covered over 300 medical appointments with children and of course some visits to the Emergency Department. Nonny, Dena and the tias also covered numerous dental appointments and visits to the ophthalmologist.
  • Security cameras were installed in the workshop for better security there, The cameras also cover House #1.
  • The security wall was extended by another 200 feet.
  • House #1 got a paint job inside and out with thanks to a great short term team!
  • The huge old tree near House #1 was felled to let in more light and reduce the danger of a thunderstorm bringing that tree down on the house with 12 kids. In addition, a chain link fence was built along the edge of the hill to prevent children from taking a tumble down the hill toward the workshop.
  • Each house got a new refrigerator, a new washing machine and a beautiful new set of living room furniture, as well as new curtains, bedspreads, and a rug or two, as part of our continuing effort to upgrade the houses.
  • The Central Kitchen now has an industrial refrigerator and an industrial freezer. Nothing but the best!
  • Our kitchen has weekly menus and so with the help of our cook and our nutritionist Andrea, we have tasty, healthy meals.
  • The offices were upgraded with new desks, computers and shelves to help keep our administrative staff happy and productive.
  • Security at Hogar de Vida has been a long-term priority. To have our automatic gate fully functioning for a while now has been a great asset. Dave Onstad's last visit to install the "Communicator" in the front office allows us to open and close the gate without having to get up from our desks. That reduces the temptation to leave the gate open for a while.
  • The parking area in front of the offices is now cemented. Our thanks go out to the teams who made that a reality.
  • The administrative offices got an inside facelift thanks to another team - out with institutional green and in with beige. Oscar made his own contribution with a new shelf that he built. Very nice job!
  • The septic system also got a "facelift" and is functioning better.
  • Teams painted two beautiful murals on the security wall. One is just outside the front entrance and the other is visible to gatherings in El Rancho. The new murals bring joy and life to everyone!
  • The children visited Playa doa Ana, Puntarenas and other places, adding to their delight and sense of belonging. Most families do these things and Hogar de Vida puts a priority on making life "normal" for these kids.
  • Last year, the five school children celebrated all the Costa Rican celebrations to instill a sense of patriotism and culture.
  • Our work environment and team appreciation was blessed by having Dena and her cinnamon rolls show up regularly, plus a turkey on Thanksgiving.
  • The "tias" and other staff members were remembered on their birthdays with a special gift and a special day planned around the event.
  • Each child's life is celebrated on their birthday complete with gifts and a cake, of course.
  • This year our morning devotional times from Monday through Friday were especially meaningful with a theme chosen for each month. We covered several important heart-issues: gratitude, honoring others, preferring one another along with the importance of seeking God daily.
  • Christmas rushed upon us with the wonderful expectation of trees and gifts. No one was disappointed. The three houses were decked out and the El Rancho had a huge tree.
