Homes of Life in Central America
Costa Rica
October 2015
This month's newsletter features two gripping articles written by Kathleen Kjolhaug, a Costa Rica volunteer. Kathleen's heart for the ministry and insider's perspective capture the spirit and soul of Hogar de Vida. Steve Hoover supplied photographs that vividly illustrate Kathleen's word pictures.

Thanks to Kathleen and Hoover.

"Mommy...Mommy...Mommy..."

Gates pressing in...child's face pressing upon gate...looking out...reaching out. "Mommy...mommy...mommy..." she cries from deep within.

There is no mommy. Not here...no mommy near. Plenty of hands to have and to hold, but they are not mommy's. On into the night her cries may be heard around campus. Although she has been given a place in which to lay her head, although she has been given sustenance, these things are not which she longs for. She longs for mommy, and her cries pierce the darkness. It is painful. It is painful to listen to the cries of the wounded; it is painful to be the wounded.

Day One: Cries of desperation are heard as those who are near offer what comfort they can.

Day Two: Little arms cling to the first Tia, caregiver...pseudo mama...to whom she was introduced. Defiant she is of any other. Crying and clinging become her hope. It's the only control she has amidst the chaos from which she was taken.

Day Three: She awakens and there is a glimmer of hope in this new world in which she resides...this children's home....Hogar de Vida in Atenas, Costa Rica. It guards and guides for a season. It will bridge her world. And, whether she wants to or not...she must cross. She rises on day three and her arms lift. As her arms lift, so do the corners of her mouth and she is beginning to calm.

She has clung tightly to one Tia in the home more oft than not since her arrival, but today she recognizes that which is a bit familiar. Three days of familiar helps. The familiar helps rescue her from the undertow. She is coming up for air and begins to breathe a little easier.

Hands outstretched, she reaches for a set of arms, a new set of Tia's arms. It's a given they reach for her; it's a miracle she reaches them. And, for a moment, she calms in the midst of the stormy sea swirling round...the happenstances of life...driven by the choices others have made near and dear to her. You see, while one may choose any sin in which to partake, one may not choose the consequences. The consequences of another's choices landed upon the heart ache within this little one, and she feels the pain. It is deep.

This sea of chaos has washed her ashore, and she is safe now. She is on solid ground although she does not know that yet. The boat in which she was has been rocked...or hit one (a rock that is)...or her boat flat out sunk. She's been swept into currents she did set sail in...and with no control whatsoever, she desperately wants some (control that is). And so, she screams "mommy...mommy...mommy..."

Her voice is heard and her Daddy, her heavenly Father who will never leave her nor forsake her (Heb. 13:5) has brought her to Hogar de Vida...Homes of Life...which gives life...through Him.

On day three, like her heavenly Father, she rises. And thus begins her journey...Amen.

Tias

I walk to the home and step in. One more pic is needed. Snapping pics has become a gift this time round. You see...I brought my big camera this time round. Without hesitation...this time round...and now we need one more photo of a Tia (an auntie figure whose role is to give care) whose face I somehow missed.

You see, there is a covert operation on campus of this children's home, hashtag Hogar de Vida, hashtag Homes of Life, hashtag Atenas, Costa Rica. Cards are being made for each Tia, each worker, each pseudo mama here. Mother's Day is just around the corner...a special day in August... and they will be honored...but they do not know. It's a surprise.

Blessed are they who are called. Blessed are they who lean not onto their own understanding but in all their ways acknowledge Him and He will direct their paths. The paths of the Tias were directed to the children. And as a thank you, the Tias are being blessed by Dena. Dena is a Tia to the Tias...a caregiver if you will...of all who enter. She desired to honor them on this special day with a personal note, a personal thank you, and so I entered. I entered on behalf of Dena, into the kitchen to snap a final photo needed. The children were napping. This would be a good time.

One foot in, and I stopped. I stopped as the scene to my left caused me to pause. The voices were not expected. The quiet was not expected. The gathering before me was not expected. Together the three Tias...in the midst of the humid heat and breathless air with no children to tend ...sat. They sat at the table...and prayed.

They could have slept as did the wee ones, they could have put their feet up, they could have taken a second portion, they could have chosen to visit. They chose to sit at His table of grace, and they chose to pray. And pray they did. I paused. I listened. I waited. Camera in hand began to feel weighted; I waited. They prayed. One rose to change a diaper. The others prayed.

I stepped quietly...just a bit deeper into the room...turned, and unbeknownst to them, I snapped the pic. I made my exit. They prayed.

And this is how Hogar de Vida, Home of Life, continues to give life, continues to be a home for all who enter. And this is how Hogar de Vida continues to grow and resuscitate all who enter. And this is how even those who lift their weary hands can pray...because He sustains. It is a home, it is a sanctuary, it is a stronghold for Him. A mighty fortress is our God...a mighty fortress is Hogar de Vida...so when those who have entered find that it is time to leave...they are restored. They are renewed in order to go, therefore, and live the Gospel.

The instructions are clear...clear in 1 Thessalonians 5:17. "Pray without ceasing." And so they do. Amen.
