Life Plan House Update

In December 2014, we sent out a special request asking our partners in ministry to help us to purchase a transition house. This house was to be a safe place for the young people in our care who have turned 18 to transition into adult life. Currently they are all young men.

In February 2015, we purchased the house and took possession. Praise the Lord for His provision through His people. We couldn't have done it without you!

The house is only three years old and in great shape, but there were still some improvements and changes that needed to be done before the young men could move in. As always, God's timing was perfect. We took possession of the house right before a team of 23 young people came from Grove City College in Pennsylvania. These energetic college students made quick work of painting the living room, four bedrooms, kitchen, hallway and outside front wall. The house was transformed from plain cement block walls to cheery, vibrant colors. What was dull and uninviting became a welcoming and enjoyable home.

After the walls were painted, false ceilings were installed in all the bedrooms by the Grace Fellowship team from Kearney, Nebraska. We also upgraded the electrical system, installed a new gate and bought a new refrigerator and stove. This all took place in a couple months.

At the beginning of June, six months after our financial plea, the house was ready. Because we want His presence in everything we do, a group prayed over the house and anointed it with oil. Two weeks later the young men eligible to live in the house signed a contract that laid down all the expectations. Then just like that, it was move in day. There are currently three young men living in the home and doing very well. It is so exciting to see God bring to fruition the dream He planted in a few hearts. He is so good! Thank you for your part in investing in these young men.

Race-Walk for Those Who Can't

One challenge that comes from living in the mountains of rural Guatemala is the lack of access to special resources. We have two children in our home who need ongoing physical therapy. Four year old Alicia was born with Cerebral Palsy that affects her right side. Jose, also four, has a neurological disorder. The Lord is providing for their special physical needs through the Physical Therapy program at Aselsi International Ministries, located in Chichicastenango, an hour and a half drive from Hogar de Vida. Every other Friday Alicia, Jose and two workers get up early enough to arrive for their physical therapy appointments at 8:30 a.m. Though it isn't convenient, it is a blessing to be able to get quality treatment for them. A worker is always present to observe what the therapists are doing so it can be repeated at the home between appointments.

The Physical Therapy program at Aselsi International Ministries is celebrating 10 years of ministry. On Saturday, August 1st, they had a "Race-Walk for Those Who Can't."  Over 100 people gathered to walk or run about a mile. There were wheel chairs, walkers, bikes with hand peddles, and strollers. Some people walked, some ran. There were lots of victory stories to celebrate. Children and adults, who previously hadn't been able to walk, were now walking a mile for those who can't.

Alicia and Jose are two of the victors. When Alicia was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 16 months, the Doctor said that she would walk some day but probably not until she was 3 or 4 years old. At 20 months old, Alicia took steps unassisted. On Saturday, August 1st, Alicia ran across the finish line.

Jose arrived at the home at 2-1/2 years old, severely malnourished and unable to walk. Shortly after his arrival he was diagnosed with a neurological disorder. Since then Jose's health has improved and he can now walk on his own. On Saturday, August 1st, Jose walked over half of the race-walk.

We are so thankful to the Lord for the way He provides the specific needs of each child He has put under our care. And we are thankful for the ministry of the Physical Therapy program at Aselsi International Ministries that is helping Jose and Alicia conquer their physical challenges.
