LIFE PLAN

Mission

The mission of Home of Life and Nutrition is first to provide shelter and nutrition to needy children.  Further, the mission is to provide education, love, affection, care, protection, and Christian training, surrounding them with a nuturing home where they can develop personally in a healthy way. Finally, the mission is to instill good principles, values and habits to the children leading to strong Christian character. The Home of Life and Nutrition is located in San Andres, Sajcabaja, Guatemala in the Department of Quiche.  San Andres is located in the center of the country in a valley surrounded by mountains.

Vision

The vision for Life Plan is to extend the educational opportunities for children approaching maturity to prepare them for a career and productive life in adulthood.

The 28 children who currently live in the home have come from different backgrounds and for different reasons.  Some have come because of malnutrition due to poverty in their family.  Others have come because they are true orphans without any family, have been abandoned, or have been removed from their home by the authorities due to an abusive situation.  These children not only require a lot of help and orientation when they first arrive, but they also need ongoing help from the Home as they grow.  The Home receives children from the ages of 0-10 years old.  The majority will stay and grow up in the Home, so the Home can potentially have up to 30 children between the ages of 0-18 years old.  The Guatemalan government requires that when a child turns 18, they can no longer continue to live in the Home.

For the children who grow up at the Home of Life, we are their only supportive family. They have no one else. Many are behind in their education when they arrive due to their previous circumstances and are unable to complete high school by the time they turn 18.  These young people still need a lot of support physically, emotionally and economically to complete high school and then college if appropriate. Each has their own unique circumstances and unique needs. We want to help each one develop a vision for their future and to help them reach their goal with God's help.

LIFE PLAN: Help For Our Young Adults

We currently have several young people nearing the age of 18, and we need to expand our ministry in order to better prepare them with an education and a career so that they will thrive in their future.  We desire to keep them under our care, as if they were our own, until they finish high school and college according to their potential while at the same time abiding by Guatemalan regulations.  We can do this by providing them a place to live outside of the Home of Life, as well as help with food, clothing, personal needs and education, depending on their unique circumstances. They are the children that God has placed under our care and we want to give them the support they need to be productive, successful adults.

For 2014, there are three young men who will soon turn 18 who are still in school and will need housing outside of the children's home.  At this time as we launch into Life Plan, we believe that relying on nearby rental housing at least for now, gives us flexibility and an affordable cost, while avoiding the high capital cost of purchasing land and constructing a residential building. Our plan is for the young men to sleep there, but continue to eat their meals with us at the Home.

In two years, we anticipate a similar need for 1-3 young ladies.  When the time comes, we believe the best way to support the young women is to find one or more Christian families who will rent a room for them.  We are already aware of a room nearby we can rent with a good Christian family that will house up to 3 girls.

We need your help.  We cannot do this without you!  First and foremost we need your prayers:

  • For the Lord's direction in the lives of these young people.
  • For wisdom for the adults who are guiding them toward a productive adult life.
  • For God's protection and care as they assume more personal responsibility and make more and more adult decisions.
  • That God will provide the opportunities they need and the resources to pursue them.

The second way you can help is to support Life Plan financially.  We'll need approximately $5,000 in 2014 to launch Life Plan as we support the three young men as we have described.  There are no public high schools for them in our area. Private schools are the only option.

  • Julio
has completed 9th grade. He would like to pursue a two year program leading to a high school diploma in the Sciences at a private school an hour away in the town of Santa Cruz del Quiche. Tuition, room and board would cost $2000 per year.
  • Mingo
is entering his last year of high school here in San Andres and will receive his diploma in Teaching.  His total cost this year, including his student teaching is $2,000.
  • Edyn
will begin his 2nd of 3 years of high school in the same teaching program as Mingo.  His annual cost will be $1,500.
If are able to support Life Plan financially, please designate your gift to Guatemala Life Plan using any of the payment vehicles provided or that you normally use.

We cannot do this without you, and we want to thank you for your partnership in this mission.
