5 Not-So-Easy Pieces of MU Stage 2

As healthcare providers pore over the Stage 2 meaningful use requirements, they will notice a number of changes, tighter requirements and higher percentages to hit.

Dan Prevost of Arcadia Solutions, a healthcare consulting firm that advises clients on technology developments, says providers need to be aware of key developments in Stage 2 in order to attain their full incentive payment upon implementation of an electronic health record.

Meaningful Use Stage 2 Crunch Starts Now

The federal government may have delayed the start of Stage 2 of meaningful use by a year, to 2014, but that does not mean healthcare providers should relax in their pursuit of the intended goals of the EHR incentive program, namely better, safer healthcare at lower cost.

"There's still a bit of a timing issue even though we have some relief," Pam McNutt, senior vice president and CIO for Dallas-based Methodist Health System, said at the annual College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) Fall CIO Forum.

Indeed, thousands of healthcare facilities will be installing or upgrading their systems next year after vendors update their products to meet the new 2014 EHR certification standards, and that could create a backlog with suppliers. "Get on your vendor's schedule now," McNutt advised.

ICD-10

ICD-10 educator Rhonda Buckholtz says the industry needs to calm down about ICD-10 so everyone can fully understand what really has to happen and begin to prepare in earnest.

"We've all heard horror stories about the ICD-10 implementation, and at a time when we have so many other competing initiatives it's hard to be able to think straight about something that's two years away," said Buckholtz, a certified professional coder and vice president of ICD-10 education and training at AAPC. "But what you read in the multitude of stories designed to shock and awe the industry are not always what they appear to be upon first glance."

MGMA: 11 ways to prepare for ICD-10 on the cheap

Think the transition to ICD-10 is just learning a bunch (a real big bunch) of new codes? Think again, Robert Tennant urged Monday during MGMA-ACMPE's annual conference in San Antonio, where he laid out how physician practices could prepare on the cheap.

Tennant, senior policy adviser in MGMA's government affairs department. called switching to ICD-10 codes "probably the biggest change in healthcare since Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law in the 60s,"

"It's going to impact every system, almost every employee within your practice - maybe not the custodial staff, but just about everybody else," he said. "This is not just an IT project," he said. "This is going to permeate every nook and cranny of the practice."

'Troubling disconnect' Between Mobile Security Threats and Protections in Place

Even as nearly everyone is using smartphones and tablets for critical information, few organizations have taken steps to keep the devices safe from cyber threats, according to a new survey from the Polytechnic Institute of New York University and AT&T.

A full 90 percent of respondents allowed employees to access work email via mobile devices, and 41 percent say they allow their employees to access important files via mobile devices, according to the study.

7 Steps To Help Safeguard Against Breaches

At the same time the government is encouraging healthcare providers, doctors and insurance companies to digitize healthcare information, the landscape for attacking that info is increasing dramatically. Data beaches occur routinely, but data security experts warn about the vastly higher cost of waiting until a breach occurs, than doing the upfront work to prevent it.

"A security breach is an incredibly expensive problem," said Danny Creedon, managing director at Kroll Advisory Solutions, a company that deals in risk mitigation and response. "There's significant cost surrounding investigation, notification, remediating what occurred and putting in to place services like credit monitoring and identify theft service monitoring that have a monthly cost per person and remain in effect for some time.
