Director's Message
The 4-H Foxfire kids built a display for showing off what's blooming in the library garden. Last year they worked hard to install a pollinator garden featuring native plants. Throughout the summer and fall we got questions from patrons about the plants that were in bloom. Sometimes we could answer, sometimes not, so we decided to create a more formal display with the plant names. It's a work in progress that you'll see greeting you as you enter the library.

We have a number of great local history events coming up including a day hike with Bud Eckert who will show us homesteads along the Kanape Brook Trail. This is a full day gentle hike so please bring a bag lunch and plenty of water and please preregister at the library. You can join the hike at the beginning and leave early if you wish. Also in June we have Gina Giuliano, giving us a fuller picture of Elwyn Davis, the West Shokan farmer whose diaries were recently published; a lecture by Robert Selkowitz about a 1903 road race that came through Olive, and  July 16 we will have Stephen Silverman come and talk about his book The Catskills: Its History and How It Changed America.

In case you missed signing up, it's not too late. We are now a Friday drop off location for Rondout Valley Organics, a group of local organic farms in the Rondout Valley. It is similar to a CSA but includes more than vegetables and more flexibility. Please visit the website to learn more about the farms and find out how to join. There will be lots of vegetables available during the growing season.

See you at the library!

In 1947, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) was Hollywood's top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. TRUMBO (directed by Jay Roach) recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice of the blacklist, which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger.

"Early summer in a village in Northern Turkey. Five free-spirited teenage sisters splash about on the beach with their male classmates. Though their games are merely innocent fun, a neighbor passes by and reports what she considers to be illicit behavior to the girls' family. The family overreacts, removing all "instruments of corruption," like cell phones and computers, and essentially imprisoning the girls, subjecting them to endless lessons in housework in preparation for them to become brides. As the eldest sisters are married off, the younger ones bond together to avoid the same fate. The fierce love between them empowers them to rebel and chase a future where they can determine their own lives in a powerful portrait of female empowerment."

Despite just two albums to her name Amy Winehouse is one of the biggest music icons in British history. With a voice oft described as a combination of Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, Amy Winehouse was a pop star with soul; a once in two generational musical talent whose appeal crossed cultural and demographic boundaries. But while her music made her a star, her chaotic personal life stole headlines.

Book Discussion Group

A MANUAL FOR CLEANING WOMEN compiles the best work of the legendary short-story writer Lucia Berlin. With the grit of Raymond Carver, the humor of Grace Paley, and a blend of wit and melancholy all her own, Berlin crafts miracles from the everyday, uncovering moments of grace in the Laundromats and halfway houses of the American Southwest, in the homes of the Bay Area upper class, among switchboard operators and struggling mothers, hitchhikers and bad Christians.

Come discuss this book with other readers!
