Director's Message

Welcome to our mobile-friendly newsletter! With some slight changes in design, our newsletter can now be viewed on any handheld device.

The picture above is of our pollinator garden in all its late-August glory. Anyone who is interested in helping us to expand the garden, please let us know, there is work to be done this fall.

We finished the summer reading program with a great final party with raffle basket winners picked, games, and prizes for all who attended. We had such a fun summer thanks to the 136 people who officially signed up for the program and came to different fun events and checked out lots of books, and thanks to our great program providers. We have a wealth of talent and skills here in the community and have been able to learn so much from each other!

In our front lobby case we have a special exhibit of miniature works by artist Alicia Fusco. The tiny worlds and objects she has created will boggle the mind.

You can view more of her work on her minifanaticus website.

Olive Day is September 12th and the Arm-of-the-Sea theater production of Rejuvenary River Circus at Davis Park is not to be missed. Please see more details in our newsletter.

See you at the library!

September 3
Insurgent
(Rated PG-13)
"In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she's Divergent and won't fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it's too late."
Common Sense Media recommends this film for people 14 and older: "Based on the best-selling dystopian books by Veronica Roth, Insurgent continues the story of heroine Tris (Shailene Woodley) and her love, Four (Theo James). Like the first movie, Insurgent is less violent than the book, but there's still mass shootings of mind-control trackers, execution-style murders, torture, and a fake death."

September 10
McFarland, USA
(Rated PG)
"Jim White moves his family after losing his last job as a football coach. He sees that some of the students are worth starting a cross country team and turns 7 students with no hope into one of the best cross country teams."

September 17
Kingsman
(Rated R)
"Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius."

Rejuvenary River Circus at Olive Day!

This performance will take place at Davis Park and is made possible through a grant from the Catskill Watershed Corporation. Olive Free Library will also have a booth at Olive Day where you can buy cookbooks, gardening books, and children's books at great prices. We will also have raffle baskets to support the library.

This CIRCUS is an allegorical tale featuring gorgeous masks and puppet characters, a bio-morphic set design and live original music. The story follows Malakai, the River messenger and water carrier who travels between Mountain Peaks and the Deep Blue Sea. Along his journeys Malakai encounters a host of creatures, including a lyrical sea turtle, a fast-talking crow, a pair of industrious beavers, beds of filter-feeding oysters, and schools of migrating fish. Each animal offers insights into their particular role in a watershed's ecosystem services. When the old man falls ill his granddaughter Rachel must rise to the challenge and help restore her grandfather, the River, back to health.
Wednesday, August 19, 6-8 p.m.

Clara & Mr. Tiffany: A Novel
By Susan Vreeland

It's 1893, and at the Chicago World's Fair, Louis Comfort Tiffany makes his debut with a luminous exhibition of innovative stained-glass windows that he hopes will earn him a place on the international artistic stage. But behind the scenes in his New York studio is the freethinking Clara Driscoll, head of his women's division, who conceives of and designs nearly all of the iconic leaded-glass lamps for which Tiffany will long be remembered.

Come discuss this with other book lovers!

Monday, September 21, 6:30 p.m.

School Holiday Matinee: Cinderella
(PG)

"Refreshingly traditional in a revisionist era, Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella proves Disney hasn't lost any of its old-fashioned magic." (Rated certified fresh on Rotten Tomotoes).
Common Sense Media says this movie is appropriate for ages 6 and older.

UPDATE! Library Beehive Project

Local Boy Scout, Blake Overton, is building an observation beehive for the library thanks to many donations raised in the past year. He is now in the construction phase of the project. Here is the main part of hives so far, minus the kiosk:

Snowshoes Wanted!

The library is seeking donations of snowshoes in good condition that we can lend out (just like we loan out books and ukuleles!) We are particularly interested in kids sizes right now so we can take kids in the nature club out in the woods during the winter. If you have any snow shoes you would like to donate, please bring them to the library. Thank you!
